The province of Taranto (Italian: provincia di Taranto), previously known as the province of the Ionian, is a province in the Apulia region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Taranto. It has an area of 2,437 square kilometres (941 sq mi), and a total population of 578,465 (2001). There are 29 comuni (singular: comune) in the province, all of which are listed at comunes of the Province of Taranto. The coat of arms of the province contains a scorpion, which Pyrrhus is thought to have seen when looking down at Taranto.

Did a wine tour of this winery and it was the best wine experience ever had. Tour through the vineyards plus old Trulli buildings on the property was amazing.Guide was informative and explained history of the property and winery.Tastings themselves were excellent quality wine accompanied with some light snacks.Purchased some cartons of wine and were received in perfect condition very quickly.Can highly recommend a visit to the winery and this area in general.

The closed Bay of Taranto has been an ideal naval base since the time of Tarentum, with its anchorage protected from the sea. Only the Royal Navy was able to get the Italian fleet here in 1940, and then only with the help of deck bombers and Swordfish torpedo bombers. However, the ideal anchorage gives rise to another problem - how to get to it from the sea without breaking the message. The bridge becomes an obstacle. Officially, the bridge is called San Francesco di Paola, but everyone calls it the Ponte Girevole-swing bridge. The bridge was opened in 1887, when the displacement of new all-metal ships did not allow passage under the bridge. Opening the bridge is necessary for large warships to go to the docks and Arsenal of the Navy located in the Small sea for repairs. The two sections of the bridge did not rise, as for example in Saint Petersburg, but were separated to the sides. They were powered by hydraulic turbines operated from the Aragonese castle. Hydraulics were replaced in the post-war 50s by electric motors. Unfortunately, I didn't see this miracle of Italian engineering in action. It is not every day that Italian destroyers and cruisers pass through the 400-meter channel...

We found wine tasting at Locorotondo, food at Alberobello, and vineyards galore. A lovely area to eat if you can get it freshly prepared. Be warned that some of the region has Italian type fast food like pasta that is pre made and then microwaved. Yuk!

The hypogeum Bellacicco is a hypogeum structure. Its peculiarity which makes this structure unique all over the historic and artistic landscape of Taranto is that in it we can find records of all the ages and the historical periods dating back from Taranto's foundation by the Spartans up to the XVII century, date of the building of the homonymous noble palace. The hypogeum is divided into 4 rooms (5-8 metres hight) and shows an extension of 800 square metres and a depth which reaches, at the lovest levels (4 altogher) 16 metres under the street basement and 4 metres under the sea level. The structure, in central position as regards the isle of the historic centre, represents a crossroad with the other hypogeum structures of the ancient village that constitues, on the whole, the system of "Taranto Underground" that reaches and radiates just from the hypogeum de Beaumont Bonelli Bellacicco. Thought it is difficult to set a precise date of building and the different historic developments of the structure, all the historical, archeological and geological studies report as date of the first building of the hypogeum the period of foundation of Taranto city when the Spartans extracted the first rock banks to build the first constructions and fortifications. Later this area of the historical centre will be called Caves Area.The structure is private property and privately run without public financing. It currently houses the Cultural Association "Filonide" and it is the only hypogeum structure fully restored and accessible in the historical centre. The restoration of the structure (lasted 6 years) was realized by the family funds of its current owners (family Bellacicco) without public or private financing. In 2007 it received the acknoledgement as remarkable cultural heritage by the Minister for cultural heritage and activities by the apposition of a display at the entrance of the structure. The hypogeum is object of different degree thesis in Italy and in the U.S.A and it is a container of cultural and artistic events of different kind

This place offers the opportunity to meet the ancient Spartans and to see how they lived and what they loved! Dott. Bellacicco has done a remarkable job in bringing this place to light and making it available for everyone. I am so glad of having been in such a unique place!
