If you're vacationing in the Hamptons, make sure to include a visit to the South Fork Natural History Museum in your itinerary. The museum features interesting exhibits that both adults and kids can enjoy. My husband and I really liked learning about the different ecological features of the area and the animals that inhabit them. The museum features a touch tank and other live animals (fish, amphibians, lizards, etc). The museum staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Behind the museum building is a beautiful butterfly garden and a system of trails. My husband and I hiked along the trails and saw several deer. Our visit to the museum was a highlight of our vacation.

The Long Island Maritime Museum has a large collection of small craft which have either been built or used around Long Island. Our collection includes many different sailboats built by the legendary Gil Smith at his boatyard in Patchogue. We also have a brand new Lifesaving Exhibit, which is an interactive program. Activities for schoolchildren include winter and spring break programs, as well as summer camps.
We thoroughly enjoyed our sail with Priscilla and her crew! The Museum has done a splendid job restoring this oyster sloop. The crew are very knowledgeable and hearing the history of the boat and boats like her was fascinating. The two hours were over before we knew it.

Located in Oyster Bay, New York and originally landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers, the grounds feature 409 acres of greenhouses, rolling lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths and outstanding plant collections. The original historic estate buildings remain intact including Coe Hall, a 65-room Tudor Revival mansion designed by Walker and Gillette. The interior of the house is a showcase of artistry and craftsmanship and features a distinctly American aesthetic through original ironwork commissions by Samuel Yellin and murals painted by artists Robert Winthrop Chanler and Everett Shinn. Planting Fields is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
This was a beautiful park in which to spend a couple hours on a low key vacation. While we did not manage to walk all the trails in our limited time here, we enjoyed what we saw immensely, and had the place almost to ourselves. I would love to come back in the spring when more flowers are blooming. Do not miss the main greenhouse! The cactus, begonia and orchid branches were great, as well as the wonderful tropical plants and trees in the main section. The dahlia garden was very nice. Also of note, the Sensory garden and Italian garden. After Labor Day, the $8 per car fee is only collected on weekends.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Reichert Planetarium’s highest priority is always the safety and health of its guests, staff and volunteers, and now even more so during the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Vanderbilt has been closely monitoring COVID-19 and our grounds and buildings are currently open in a limited capacity, and observing social distancing measures. Updated: March 12, 2020 The Vanderbilt Museum is located on the 43-acre waterfront estate of William K. Vanderbilt II, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The state-of-the-art Reichert Planetarium, with its 60-foot dome and theater, is the largest astronomical facility on Long Island. Throughout the year, the Museum offers intriguing programs for all ages, which are based on the animal habitats, large marine and natural-history collections, the mansion and Vanderbilt family history, and include extraordinary celestial shows on the planetarium dome.
The light shows are a treat....you have to see their schedule as to what they are showing....some is music with a light show which is quite entertaining...The museum is very interesting to browse thru with items that you would normally see in the Museum of Natural History in NYC.... the grounds are lovely to walk around in good weather and the depending on a clear evening after the last light show, you can get to view the planets and stars at night..

This place is great for all ages and for return visits. As a Long Islander, I was amazed at the rich history of early aviation and space exploration that occurred in this area. Kids will love the ability to climb into the cockpits of jets and space capsules. Look for Groupon offers to get discounted admission tickets.

The Lieber Museum is located in a beautiful building on Old Stone Highway. If you're in East Hampton, New York for any reason, take time out to see the most intricate, unique and beautifully designed evening handbags you're ever likely to see. They are wearable art. First Ladies, royalty and many celebrities have bought these handbags or have had one made for them. The story of the designer and how she came to develop this business is so interesting and is emblematic of one of the many privileges of living in America.
