Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur

Reviewed By termar - Hamilton, Canada

A Buddhist monastery dating from the 8th c, the area is the country’s most impressive archaeological site. It is massive at some 27 acres. Built by Dharmapala, the second Pala king, it had 177 monastic cells. The terraced central temple was done in cruciform shape, measuring a colossal 922' by 918'. The grounds are worth a stroll. The colour of the bricks would make for great photography in the late afternoon. There is a small museum on sitte.

Puthia Temple Complex

Reviewed By dmittleman - Palm Beach Gardens, United States

Perhaps the most concentrated assemblage of temples and palaces in Bangladesh, this complex does not disappoint. Yes, massive restoration is needed. Yes, there is garbage everywhere. But this doesn't impact upon the sheer beauty of so many monuments. Make sure you take a guide with you. They can open up locked temples and bring you to places that just aren't in guide books.

This temple is made of hand crafted terracotta tiles. These tiles tell the story of the Hindu lord Krishna. If one is present during sunset the ambience of the place will take your breathe away.

Chhoto Sona Mosque

Reviewed By Kazi_Ziauddin - Dhaka City, Bangladesh

An awesome historical place to visit. The design, pattern and build quality with thick wall (around 6 feet) is very soothing for eyes and mind. Even after 400 years it never seemed like an antique product but a well planned recent structure. A must see archeological site to visit at Chapai Nababgonj district of Rajshahi division of Bangladesh.

Kusumba Mosque

Reviewed By JoyShurjo - Bangkok, Thailand

This medieval mosque. a must see in Naogaon, was built in the 16th century. This ancient mosque built with sand stones and black stones is maintained and managed by country's archaeological department. Travelers from Naogaon and Rajshahi can go to this place by taking autorickshaw directly to this place (cost would be higher). Otherwise, take a bus upto Manda ferry ghat and then take a rickshaw to the mosque. Very quiet and calm place with serenity. Fridays are crowded. Very beautiful place as there is a lake in front of this mosque. It is located in a rural area. A sand stone column is located in a paddy field near the mosque and a black box made by stone on the way.

Bara Ahnik Mandir

Reviewed By dmittleman - Palm Beach Gardens, United States

The small temple is hidden in an area of Puthia that many people just don't get to see. Make sure you have a guide and insist that he take you here. The inside is not much to see. It's the exterior brick work and extant terracotta carvings that are exquisite. A real gem.
