Top 10 Shopping in Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago

May 10, 2022 Layne Dawes

Former palaces and Arab mansions along the twisting streets of Stone Town hint at a grander age for this port city on the western coast of Zanzibar. The Old Fort, built in the 1700s to fend off the Portuguese, now hosts local performances, a café and an art gallery. Overstuffed bazaars lend an air of nonstop bustle. Mafia Island Marine Park sits just offshore, a haven for snorkeling the local reefs. Day tours visit working plantations where the island's legendary spices are grown.

This shop has more than souvenirs- they carry gifts that will become treasured keepsakes. I am so glad that I did some research before my trip and found this gem. I was able to bring some specific coins from home that have special significance to me. I bought two coins from the shop that were already made and then I left two coins for them to make with special inscriptions. They took my information and said they would be mailed out to me within a few days. Due to customs and such it took a few weeks to reach me at home but I was so very pleased with their work. One was sent off as a gift to a friend who truly loved it and the other was for me. I wear it all the time and it is a great reminder of my wonderful time in Africa. Asante Sana.

Wonderful products, nice range and everything smells amazing. I bought a set of body butter, scrub soap and lip balm and it came in a lovely little pouch, all for 30 USD. Highly recommend.

Yawara Gallery is a very unique selection of the finest Tinga-Tinga paintings. It is a very special collection of exceptionally talented artists from Tanzania, who are all unique story tellers conveying their life experiences, wisdom and vision through the Tinga-Tinga traditions and style. It’s hard to find similar quality work elsewhere, so you better not miss the opportunity when you’re in Zanzibar. Support these supremely talented artists by purchasing their beautiful works. Beside the Art Gallery, Yawara provides an excellent pressure point Japanese massage. All masseurs are highly qualified and certified through the reputable Japanese Shiatsu school. The Beautiful Eyes

We start more than three year ago, a fine art photo gallery in the centre of Stone Town in the former tourist shop of Zakia. The idea to initiate The Beautiful Eyes as a place to present art photography started in May 2008 when three photographers visited Zanzibar for a week of photography. They missed a place to talk, present and even to buy photography. In September 2008 Hans Agterdenbos, one of the three, came back to stone town and started investigations to open a gallery. He met Zakia Abdullah they married in march 2009 and they founded The Beautiful Eyes place to talk about photography, find inspiration and maybe good ideas. Up to the present time ±4500 visitors found the way into there gallery. Some take an original photograph home, others attend one of the workshops the Photowalk© the Shambawalk© the Pembasafari. Most caught some inspiration and all of them left the gallery with a good feeling and positive words
