Wanting pasta for dinner (or at least Italian) we tried Cafe Viejo and were not disappointed. Service was excellent and food was great. My son had the lobster pasta and to his great surprise actually got a whole lobster (conveniently cracked open) on top of his pasta. Great taste and the lobster was cooked excellent.The other pasta dishes we had were nice as well, but the lasagna was even better. And the one pizza we ordered was also good.Yes, the place is pricey (talk New York prices, the bill for 4 was $102 US), but when the food is this good I'm not complaining.Thanks for your review Robert :)We are very glad you and your family enjoyed your dinner at Cafe Viejo, we hope to see you again next time you are in town! Ate here one night, atmosphere and setting was great, along with the cocktails but food not so.Mahi-mahi overcooked and seafood pasta had both undercooked or dead mussels (all closed) and a very thin watery sauce.

Traveling for almost a month in Costa Rica, by FAR(!) the best place we ate in.The atmosphere is amazing, our host was so helpfull and kind, the food was fabulous, the drinks were excellent, and the service felt so professional.We had guys coming in every few minutes to wipe the water coming out of the drinks on the table (not in a wierd way), always checking in with us, got a small treat from the kitchen as a desert since we were really full, and such a smiling host.. She made our night. The prices are reasonable for the food and overall value. this should be your first restaurant choice in the area.

Surprisingly high-quality cuisine. Fresh catch of the day fish and sea fruit. Each dish with its distinct flavor. Beautiful presentation. The staff is very attent and gives lengthy explanations on ingredients of each suggestion. We were surprised to find such high quality gastronomy at such a relaxed and easy going place. If and when we are back we shall certainly return here.

Lovely ambience and good service, however, was I disappointed with my meal of sauteed curried vegetables. It had a bland, burnt and confusing flavour. Not really sure what was supposed to be going on with the flavours. My partner enjoyed his pasta, so maybe I just ordered the wrong meal. However, considering the high price of the meals I did expect better.

The family goes to work to prepare fresh cooked food in short order. We had arroz y frijoles con pollo. The chicken was marinated, tender and falling off the bone. A hot sauce with carrots and onions iis served to spice up the beans and rice. We were warned it was spicey but not so for Nuevo Mexicanas. Want to return and try the camarones and the pie de Limon. Service was more than excellent. A little off the main road; look for the sign. Opens promptly noon.

This is a special place - set back from the road on a lovely veranda. The owner is great and we had a really wonderful meal full of special touches, like him bringing out a bit of tortilla espanol and garbanzos while we waited. Overall it felt like a really special evening, a touch of Spain in Costa Rica. But we found some of the food a little lackluster. As vegetarians my husband and I didn't have loads of options for a main course, but decided to try to vegan paella. Though the presentation was nice and the texture perfect, it was bland and included no protein. Our kids (not vegetarian) had the tenderloin, which they loved, but the sides it came with were overcooked and strangely seasoned - they went uneaten. I'd definitely recommend the restaurant in any case...make a reservation or you're not likely to get a table!

Most of the food was very nice, full of flavour and good portion size. However the rice and French fries were fairly average.Setting is nice, quiet and relaxed. Would definitely recommend.

We visited this restaurant after seeing reviews online, however it was a disappointing visit.The complimentary soup was tasty, along with the bruschetta which was very nice.I had the bolognase pasta which was bland and didn't have much flavour. My boyfriend had the fish which was drenched in coconut sauce and overpowering any other flavour.Service was good and very attentive.
