Top 10 restaurants in Vicenza, Italy

October 21, 2017 Nobuko Falco

Vicenza’s history dates back to pre-Roman times, but it’s a Renaissance figure, Andrea Palladio, with whom the city is most associated. One of the preeminent figures in Western architecture, Palladio built more than twenty buildings here, including the Basilica Palladiana, the Palazzo Chiericati (home to Vicenza’s museum and art gallery), the Teatro Olimpico (his last and some say greatest work) and many other palaces and villas, leading UNESCO to designate the city as a World Heritage Site.

We had dinner here last night. We went for the meat tasting menu at 45 euros a head. For this we got water, a selection of starters, two types of pasta, two types of main and one pudding and coffee. But what we found great was that the price also included a glass of well chosen wine to match each course. Including a welcome glass of Prossecco. The decor has the feel of a holiday camp and you half expect after the plates had been cleared to have a game of bingo. But the food was exceptional and the staff warm and friendly. We shall definitely return.

Antico Guelfo

Reviewed By JandApe - London

This restaurant provided the most pleasant of surprises. Most places we visit are recommended by a well known Italian “foodie” publication. It’s not surprising therefore, when those establishments deliver “the goods”. I’m sorry to say this but in my experience, TA reviews are a little erratic. Too much emphasis on cost and service and not enough about what is on the plate. However, when all the “foodie-guide” establishments are closed and you are in a new city, you can either trust to pot-luck or - as in this case - TA.
From the 32 English reviews of Antico Guelfo, 28 were four and five star; so they have to be doing something right. The restaurant is located slightly outside the centre of town: about a ten minute walk from the main tourist sights. Sadly, this means it misses out on a lot of tourist footfall. Add to that the fact that from the outside, it’s quite a low-key place. There is also no sign of a “tourist-special” or the ubiquitous pizza-menu. Should you enter however, you will find yourself in a very restrained and elegant dining room. We were led there by the most charming and friendly waitress imaginable. We were, (at that time), the only diners, so I took a quick photo - something I don’t normally do.
The menu was delightfully concise and devoid of tourist “favourites” - hurrah! Even better was the wine list, which was wonderfully local and listed by producer - not style. From the list we chose a wine from the Veneto, that was made from non-local grapes, (Cab. Sauv., Cab, Franc and Merlot). This turned out to be one of the the wine choices of the trip. One of the things I love about Italian wines is their adherence to traditional grape varietals. Perhaps I had grown a little tired of the Corvina blends? Whether this was true or not, Di Mezzo from Punto Zero was a breath of fresh-air and at (IMHO) a bargain price. I could have awarded five stars for that wine-list alone.
The commitment to quality continued with the food. We began with a mixed ham and cheese platter which was epic. Even better were the lightly pickled vegetables that accompanied it - the perfect way to kick off a meal. This was followed by two “primi” of bucatini with a creamy broccoli and anchovy sauce for me and fusilli with an aubergine and tomato sauce for my wife - both delicious. The stars of the meal came as “secondi” with my wife having the speciality of Vicenza - baccala with polenta. The best we have had. Wonderfully creamy, perfectly seasoned - accompanied by a terrific polenta. The same excellence was evident in my beef fillet with mash. The beef was terrific and cooked precisely as requested, (not always the case). The surprise for me was the quality of the mashed potato. In my experience, cooking the humble potato is one thing that Italian chefs do not do well. This was the exception that proves the rule. Wonderfully tasty potato, lifted out of the ordinary by some “grassy” olive-oil - simple but delicious.
After all that lot, we couldn’t even think about dessert and went straight to coffee and digestivo. Again, the coffee was superb and both my grappa and my wife’s digestivo were recommended by the terrific waitress and totally new to us, (not to mention totally delicious).
The best was saved for last - the bill. At €100 for the LOT - I would have been happy paying twice that. From start to finish this was excellent on all levels. For the life of me, I cannot understand why this fabulous restaurant isn’t listed in our foodie-guide. If you read any of my other reviews for Vicenza, you will read a review of an establishment, lauded for its levels of service. I promise you this - Antico Guelfo’s service makes this competitor look amateurish.
Do yourself a BIG favour and take the short stroll from the tourist hordes in Piazza dei Signori and enjoy a relaxed and excellent lunch at one of Vicenza’s best restaurants.

This is absolutely the best seafood restaurant in Vicenza. While small (be sure to make Reservations in advance) and a little difficult to find, the food was fantastic (especially the spaghetti vongole) and the service was top notch. Parking can be a bit of a problem, but recommend parking in the gas station to the right of the restaurant any time after 6:00 pm.
Great food and would recommend to anyone looking for the best in seafood.

I went here for my 3 year anniversary and it was a fantastic experience. The view from the balcony is absolutely gorgeous and the food was excellent. The waiter spoke very good English and I had no issue communicating with the rest of the staff with only minimal Italian. I HIGHLY recommend this if you are looking for a nice place to take your spouse. My wife and I ordered a full course meal with a bottle of wine and it only ran approximately 130 Euro, so it is a very reasonable price for a restaurant of this caliber.

We found that restaurant by case making the wrong turn from the main road. The place is well hidden but you are not going to regret it. The food is really excellent and does not cost much. If you are picky one can say that it is lesser spicy then one can expect but do not forget that you are in Italy. Here people do not like spicy food so the restaurants adapt themselves. Anyway, the restaurant serves high quality of food at a reasonable price. What more you can ask?
