Traditional galician restaurant with very high quality regional dishes at reasonable prices. we were a group of 8 and paid 25€/person for shared starters, main dish each and Deserts plus coffees. The staff is very diligent. Both meat and fish dishes are excellent.

O Vello Cabalo Furado

Reviewed By madamedefarge - Derby, United Kingdom

We ate here during our short stop in Tui. It is just along the street from the pension where we stayed, so very handy. It doesn't look like much from the outside and, arguably, looks even less from the inside. But the decor belies the quality of the food within. Don't let the looks put you off.
We ate there for the Menu del Dia - 9€ when we went. For that, we had a good choice of starter, main and dessert, with a bottle of wine and bread along for the ride. The kitchen is open, so you can see the chef hard at work preparing the fresh ingredients. We had the Caldo Gallego (a traditional soup) and stuffed eggs for starters - both of which were lovely and tasty. For mains, we had rabbit stew and (inadvertently) fried eggs and chips. Again, these were great. The desserts were almond tart (a Tarte Santiago I think) and an egg flan.
As other reviewers have said, the portions were generous and excellent value. We speak some Spanish, so ordering was easy enough, but I don't think the staff spoke much English. They seem very proud of what they do, as they have the names of the chef and waiter outside alongside the menus. I rather liked this, as it showed a nice personal touch.
We were the first to order lunch, at around 1.30, but it became busier after 2ish, with locals. It is worth going into, as I suspect that it's a bit oriented towards locals and not a tourist trap. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food and would recommend it to anyone who wants a slice of wholesome Spanish food. Definitely enjoyed this one.

I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised at how good they prepared the bacalhau (dried, salted cod). We ordered the grilled one and once it was served, it didn't last very long. It was well prepared, delicious, and of generous portions. The corn bread they serve was delish, too! I couldn't complain about the price as I thought it was reasonable. I know his will be a place to return to every time I visit Portugal.

Enjoyed a decently priced pilgrim’s lunch at this small restaurant around the Cathedral in old fort in Valenca. Included soup, chicken, rice, fries, dessert and coffee. Tasty? Not so much. Perhaps readers should check what others have said about the codfish, which is a house specialty. Friendly and helpful service.

A Muralla

This is not a fancy restaurant, nor do you get food with little foo-foo sauces. This is simply very fresh food, cooked just for you by one man who loves taking good care of his customers. My husband and I spent 3 nights in Tui and ate here twice. First time we had the seafood sampler for two which was enormous and only 24 euro -- swordfish, salmon, etc with wonderful fresh greens and delicious ripe tomatoes. Second time we had grilled sirloin on a skewer and swordfish with another huge salad of greens, tomatoes, onions and a large side of french fries. The wine selection is very good -- we had a 2012 Rioja Crianza for $12 euro. Demetrio is a one-man show, and he does a terrific job of cooking and serving and anticipating your needs. He also makes a very good and very light torta de queso with strawberry sauce. This restaurant is off the main drag and probably doesn't get a lot of walk-by traffic. But we think it was a wonderful meal for a terrific price -- also a very nice atmosphere sitting out on the balcony with a view of the sun setting over Valenca!

For me, the glory of most Portuguese cooking is relatively simple treatment of good ingredients, and that is exactly what they do best here at Zé Maria. The cabrito no forno (oven-roasted kid goat) is outstanding, as is the house bacalhau dish (reconstituted dried salted cod)--top notch. A half-portion here is more than enough for one--full portions can generally feed 2-3 people. Good cooking and good value, and there is a panoramic view of the Mountains to the north from the dining room.

This restaurant is hidden away behind the main road out of Valença but it is well worth a visit. The place gets VERY busy at Sunday lunchtimes so phone ahead and reserve a table. We had Costeletas (ribs) and they were mouth-watering. You just go for it and eat them with you hands!! The place also does really succulent roast chicken and the Bacalhãu is justly famous! The staff are quick and helpful and the place has a real family vibe. If you have kids then bring them in as (unlike many English restaurants) they are more than welcome here! They have a good wine list at a variety of prices but we just had beer and you know what, that´s fine! The price was amazingly low and the amount of food would have fed a small army!! Visit this place!!

A warm welcome on arrival in a beautiful sunny day. We had a booking in the Terrace but there is also indoor Seating. The ambience was good and suitable for our group which included young children. The menu was honest, traditional Galician food. Large selection of fresh fish, seafood and a variety of meats were on the menu. Tapas as starters were also available. We had Jamon croquettes, calamares and tuna empanadas. For mains we had ox steak, beef Milanese and monkfish. All were well presented, tasty and freshly cooked. Serves were generous.
