We went here for a special dinner on a Friday evening, and were surprised to be the only booking (crisis?). Having been here a long time ago, we remembered having had wonderful, if expensive, food, and this repeat visit didn't let our memories down, the food was delicious, perfectly cooked meat, and lovely presentation. Nice touches such as an appetizer whilst we waited for the starter, and impecable service, they checked up on us just the right amount. We had a very enjoyable, delicious meal. Fairly pricey though, so will be saving it for a special occassion again in the future!

On our first night in Spain we were recommended this restaurant by out hotel and we were not disappointed. Generous portions of local, well cooked food, along with a pleasant Rioja for under €10 made it a memorable visit.
The staff were very cheerful and pretty tolerant of our lack of Spanish.

We had lunch today at Palacio Mijares. What a great choice!
First of all, it is worth to start saying that we had a 3 course meal with wine for around 40 Euro (2 people)...
The decoration, food, service, and wine was simply perfect. An old palace very well refurbished and with beautiful views, a very well elaborated and delicious cuisine at affordable prices, and a very attentive staff.
Palacio Mijares is very well worth a visit. The price quality ratio is certainly second to none.

We ordered the set menu "menu azul" for lunch for two and our 5 year old daughter ate from our portions. The food was inventive, abundant and of a high quality. The appetisers included some Ox tail croquettes that were exquiste. The first course was fun, very well presented and a good balance of flavours (prawns, avocado, with a vinagrette dressing). The second was OK. One of the main course options; steak with a wild Mushroom sauce was good. The other main course option; sea bream, with black pudding didn't work so well for us. The dessert was very good, and we appreciated the attention the cook paid to our daughter. Coffee excellent. and a gin tonic invention. The decoratrion of the restaurant is interesting , the service is polite but perhaps a little too serious, the appearances of the cook in the room livened up the atmosphere. We will return.

Hosteria restaurante Calvo

This is traditional but innovative cooking at its best.
We have been there several times and there is not a single thing we have disliked; whats more, you keep looking at dishes that you want to come back and try another time!
Location: Puente San Miguel is not beautiful: the restaurant is located in a large traditional stone house on the main road.
They usually serve a portion of blue-cheese "on the house" while you are deciding what to order.
Not to be missed:
The foie toasts, squid "balls", and other little appetizers.
First courses:
All rice dishes, bean dishes, the vegetables...
Second course:
Both fish and meat are excellent. Have eaten jargo, baby lamb chops, steak: all excellent.
Desserts:
All home-made and very good.
Wine: Very reasonably priced. House wine- Rioja, also Crianza and Reserva. The wine choice is limited but what is there is excellent.
Coffee is really good! I normally do not like the way they do coffee in Cantabria.
If you have all the courses, with crainza wine, it will work out to between 32-36 per person, really excellent excellent value for the quality of the food and the cooking.
Space is limited and the restaurant gets a lot of repeat customers: you will see the cooks chatting with a lot of people. It is very casual, in the best Spanish style of eating out naturally.

This restaurant is really special. The service, the food, the atmosphere- everything! You get to cook your own steak on a hot stone but if you're not a meat person there are lots of great fish options too! The Deserts are also amazing- everything is home made and just so tasty! If you get the chance to go here, don't miss out!!

This place provides amongst the best menu del dia I have come across. The quality and quantity is great. The service is a bit slow because the place is packed and waiters are few. But once you get the attention of the waiters they are very profesional and attentive. If you don't speak Spanish though don't wait for much sympathy....just choose randomly.....this is a local restaurant not geared up to serve tourists simply because there aren't any. The desserts were the highlight of the lunch... the cheese cake (tarta de queso) is divine..

Lucio

Reviewed By Chris B - Belfast, United Kingdom

First night in Cantabria and was a bit hungry, did want to eat Spanish style food but just went for the fillet steak. It was excellent and a good portion for a fillet. The rabas (squid) we had for a starter were good when we seasoned them with salt. I certainly would recommend Lucio's for the steak.
