Calcot Manor

Reviewed By Caroline1651 - Wiltshire, UK

We hadn't been back for a couple of years, so we decided to give it a go.
Our evening was average, at best.
We were greeted by a couple of lovely kids in the bar area, seated, and drinks orders taken. I fancied a Martini, which came perfectly chilled and STRONG. Full marks there.
The first disappointment came when presented with the menu. We had decided to go because I fancied a fillet steak, which had appeared on the online menu, but was not on the menus we were given. Damn. I asked the older chap, who I presumed was the Maitre d', whether there was a fillet on the menu and received a curt "No." in return. Oh...
We ordered from grumpy chap, who never once cracked a smile, and in due course went into the restaurant, to be squeezed onto a tiny table, in a corner, where I had to practically sit on the lap of the lady at the next table in order to squash into my seat. Cosy!
It was the summer holidays and the place was full and there were a LOT of children. Reasonable well-behaved, but quite noisy. The parents were having a great time and cracking on with the wine and were very noisy too. We were just there for a casual midweek meal, but you wouldn't have wanted to be there for a romantic occasion.
The food was average to fine. That as about as good as it got - fine. My carpaccio was OK, then I had rabbit for a main (don't often see rabbit on menus these days) which was seriously under-flavoured and under-seasoned. Husband's cured salmon was almost tasteless. He had lobster macaroni for a main and it was incredibly salty. It was all very mediocre.
Another annoyance was that it was a warm summer evening (yes, we DID have one or two!) and there were loads of autumnal dishes on the menu like Beef Wellington and shin of beef and braised stuff and hot soups, when all you wanted was something light and summery. A lot of restaurants do this these days. Come on, people, we have nine months of the year for braises and pies and stuff. Give us something light and tasty on the ten days of the year when we actually HAVE a summer! But I digress...
The young ladies who served us were excellent. Lovely kids. The grumpy old chap could take lessons in customer service from them!
So... no, not really. It's quite a drive for us to get here and we have better places closer. Shame; it has amazing potential. It just needs a firmer hand in the kitchen and a more cheerful chappy upfront - and more space between the tables!

Just come back from a family meal for my husbands 50th birthday.
Although the majority of the food was good, some quite shocking (£30 Wellington with soggy pastry!)
and the service let it down (missing drinks and delay with all food orders arriving at or around the same time.
3 soufflés arriving and then almost 10 mins until final COLD Deserts arrived, meaning polite table members having luke warm collapsed soufflés!
With a £400+ bill not at all something I will want to repeat anytime soon!

Gumstool Inn

The Gumstool Inn is a traditional English country pub - cosy, cheerful, friendly and warm! Even better than that, it's set within the grounds of Calcot. Even better than that, you can get to it through the main house, so you don't even have to stray out into the cold to get there. On warmer summer days you can dine alfresco at tables in the Sunshine, with a cool drink in hand, or relax with friends for a light summer meal in our charming courtyard. When the weather's a little chilly, you can venture indoors and watch our chefs prepare delicious meals from our fireside grill. Serving real ales and excellent food, The Gumstool is always welcoming. Stop in for a quick drink, linger over a lazy lunch or tuck into a hearty supper. Top quality, seasonal, local produce is one of the reasons why our food tastes so good! We serve plum tomato & caramelised tart, steaks, crispy beer-battered cod and chunky, satisfyingly melt-away chips. You'll get a warm welcome and your children are taken care of with food that we know they'll love, and you know they'll eat. See you soon! Our menus and ingredients change regularly and throughout the seasons. Feel free to call 01666 890391 with any questions on our menus, ingredients or bookings.

This was a new place for us and warm and pleasant but at £60 it was far too expensive for a casual lunch. The food was good but not so amazing as to justify the charges. Also the pricing was somewhat variable - £6 for a homemade pate was within the norms but £20 for a pork chop was exorbitant. We were travelling and nearly two hours for a two course meal seemed a little too long to me.
There is a leisure complex attached and it is clearly a "destination location" in the countryside.

The Snooty Fox

The Snooty Fox has to be the penultimate cosy Cotswolds local. Every detail from its roaring open fires, comfy window seats and original floorboards to its wood-panelled walls are the epitome of British bonhomie, and the bar even has a resident Great Dane called Fred. The restaurant at The Snooty Fox is ideal for Sunday lunches and romantic tables for two, and the modern British menu is complimented by the real ales, ciders and wines available. Star dishes at the Snooty Fox include the Brixham fish pie with prawns, mussels, cheesy mash and veg; the duck breast with caramelised red onion potato cakes, greens and plum sauce; and the bubble and squeak with streaky bacon and a fried egg.

We were given the bridal suite, a four poster, which was a good sized room and comfortable bed. The accommodation was very tired, so while the communal areas had clearly recently had new carpets and paint the room certainly needed the same. I am getting increasingly annoyed by the poor quality of the bed linen and in particular being given bath room towels with holes in some of the hotels I have stayed in and this was no exception. Unfortunately while we found the food and dinning service to be good, the rest including check in of the accommodating side of the house I would give a great big miss.

I’m afraid I was rather disappointed. I was hoping for a slightly more welcoming room. The light fittings and switches around the bed were so high (on 6ft) that you had to get out of bed to control them. Smokeless and functional, no way of dimming the lights - I thought I was in a Spanish restaurant. The service was good and attentive in the restaurant but I’m afraid the steak had no flavour - no seasoning used. Breakfast was very good, u would have liked to see toast offered with the full English breakfast. The hotel is under new management but I would have expected better from an Inn in this beautiful Market Town. The staff are doing all that they can to make one’s stay as pleasant as possible. Investment needed in tired bedrooms and bathrooms...I’m staying in the High Street next time.

Nice cosy lunch time meal with friendly helpful staff.
Reasonable menu and good value for money finally choosing a Sandwich light lunch that came with salad and chips.
Good service and tasty meal, well presented.
Only criticism is that they stop serving at 2-30pm and the busy town could serve the visitor's better by continuing to serve food all afternoon.

We are great supporters of Cotswold Inns due to their dog friendly policy and well appointed hotel facilities (see my other favourable reviews) so is it is with sadness I write of a bad experience at this hotel. Upon calling in for a quick snack we were greeted by a pleasant waiter who then proceeded to ignore us in favour of a party of attractive girls! I eventually ordered a beef BBQ Sandwich from the bar and asked for two Coca Colas in bottles. I was told they only served another Cola brand which turned out out to cost £4.25 per bottle! Our total bill was £17.50 for a Sandwich and 2 cola drinks that tasted like cough medicine. I should add, on our last visit we were looked after by a charming lady who was a credit to the company. Please bring back 'the real thing!'

Traditional English Team Room, very personable owner serving homemade cakes, fresh sandwiches and excellent tea and coffee. Rather than trying to compete with the contemporary bistros in Tetbury, Cafe Edge's strength is its quintessential Englishness, a strength the owner should build on and develop.

Though it was busy, they were helpful in finding us space at a reserved table. The atmosphere was very friendly and it was bustling ahead of an 'open-mic' night which is reassuring for a quiet-looking town.
Food looked great and the cocktails were lovely. I wish it was local to me!
