Top 10 restaurants in Taichung, Taiwan

October 26, 2017 Concepcion Newsome

Among its many tourist attractions, Taichung offers a downtown shopping experience similar to that of Tokyo or Manhattan, a bustling nightlife, and a cuisine to please even the pickiest palate. Travelers come to this city to feast their eyes on the temples, markets, parks, and museums. Touring families often visit the Taichung National Museum of Natural Science to marvel over the exhibits or the Feng Chia night market to purchase local goods. But perhaps what Taichung is known for the most is Bubble tea, the most famous beverage in the region.

Visited Taichung for 3 days and a meal at this restaurant seemed to be a 'must do' whenever going to Taiwan. Surprised to find there's only one branch in Taichung and we took a taxi from Taichung Central Park to Top City Shopping Mall where the restaurant was. Didn't realize it was almost a 25 minutes ride and a taxi fare of NT$250. When we arrived it was 5 p.m. and no need to queue. However, by 6 p.m., there were many people queuing already.
Had the crab roe XLB, steamed fish dumplings, braised beef noodle soup, taro XLB and snow mushroom sweet soup as desserts. All were delicious with excellent services by very caring staff.

ikki New Japanese Restaurant(Taichung Fuya Branch)

Don't be mis-guided by fabulous pictures online to think this is a fine dining place. It only cost you TWD 698 per full meal! Though budget wouldn'y make a restaurant rated "good" if the food is average, which is the case here.
Waiting staff are nice and polite. However services were too quick. Dish by dish without a minute to breathe. Of course you cannot expect 2-hour hotel dining at the price but still they could slow down a little.
The meal was extensive. Appetizers are four little good dishes of pickled food. No complaint. Clam Soup was nicely put in a pot with candle light heating underneath so you have warm soup throughout the meal. Unluckily it tasted normal and not particularly fresh comparing to the amount of clams I could see inside.
Salmon and grapefruit salad was again presented nicely with a half red grapefruit as its base. It tasted as a normal fruit salad. While the sashimi was generous in portion comparing to the price, the fish and scallop were just okay. They were too cold out of the fridge and were put directly on ice. The ice were too minced and not dry enough so they stuck onto the fish which make it worse. They should learn from professional Japanese chef on handling sashimi.
Beef stone-grill was average on beef quality and comparable to its price. Nice little hot stone provided for my own cooking which is fun. While if they can provide a few more pieces of cooking paper for change (to avoid moisture of used paper affecting the grill effect) it would be even better.
Pot rice with mushroom and chestnut tasted good. I doubted if it was really cooked with the tin pot as the pot was luke warm. But not issue on the temperature of the rice.
I chose fruit as the dessert therefore not much to comment on. While the carrot juice as a drink was fresh and sweet. Overall a good dining experience however they would need to learn some basic Japanese serving and cooking technique if they target to be branded as gourmet.
Hygiene was normal, dirts inside the lamp boxes overhead, and a small insect fell down during my meal

This is our third visit to Wang Steak. The food is superb and the service is great. Jimmy, the maitre d' was very pleasant and helpful. Our waitress, Ruru, was beyond reproach.
The steak is well done but still soft and tasty. The veal is perfect.
As we were celebrating our anniversary, we were given red wine and cake on the house.
This is a must try restaurant in Taichung.

This was the first and one of the best places I ate during a week-long gourmet tour of Taichung and the surrounding area. Please read on to see why I highly recommend this fine restaurant for its food, art, architecture, and ambiance, all which contribute to a great symbiotic experience of dining and socializing.
The entrance rises dramatically above the busy street like the spectacular destination it is, and the reception area - in fact, the entire restaurant - is equally appealing. No artistic or architectural detail is overlooked, from the graphics, decorations, and sculptures to the amazing central table-height pond and dramatic lighting.
And, oh, the food! The cuisine centers around the traditional hot pot - a pot of broth is set on a burner in front of each diner, and they immerse their choice of meats, vegetables, and other foods for cooking. Delicious as it is, the highlight of the meal is the personal experience and socialization that takes place while preparing one's own meal in these exquisite surroundings. What more can you ask for? Nothing I can think of.

Nice environment but food served at the BBQ and Grill section are all frozen meat, one of the service crews has a loud vocal - it gets a little loud and annoying when you try to have a conversation.

It's a nice and decent restaurant which located at the top floor of the hotel, so we can have a good city landscape night view in Taichung. The beef is tasty and worth its price. Services are also good too. The restaurant has prepared a birthday cake, and the waitresses presented it with a birthday song. Overall very good.
