Coney Island

Burger and hotdogs only!

Reviewed By Jim G

The hype about Coney Island does not live up to its standards here. Me and my girlfriend got 2 hotdogs and 2 hamburgers our bill was $20 and some change. The food had no distinct flavor expect from the piled high onions and horrid smell of the "Coney " sauce. Our service was speedy and so was our exit and if I step foot in that place again in 20 years it's 20 years to soon.

To me, there are three must-dos in the area: go to Knoebel's (no brainer), pick up world's best bacon at Masser's Farm Market, and get a Bittersweet cone and a couple half gallons at Maurer's. As an old-timer, I remember being treated to a bittersweet come at Martz's. This started a lifelong fixation that continues to this day. Although I only visit the Shamokin area once or twice a year, I never fail to stop for my ice cream fix. By the way, Maurer's gives you your money's worth in the scoop department!

First visit, probably won't go again. The only positive thing I can say is they do give a decent amount of food and it is normal restaurant prices, not typical park prices. Salad is weak, mashed potatoes dried out and need lots of gravy, guess that is why they give you a lot of gravy to pour on. Roast beef is so dried out you can't eat it, stuffed flounder is floating in butter, way too much. Service was kids and actually was not that bad. Whoever is cooking needs to be replaced and it would be a big improvement.

The food was okay.....at its best. Little salad bar....kind of generic. Menu has all of the regular prepackaged Italian food. I once ordered the chicken Florentine....a special that was on the chalkboard.....but it definitely wasn't Florentine. More like a dry franchise. Service is very week. Take out pizza isn't bad. Vinny Clausi should test this food since he calls him self Italian.....and make the dining area a little more enjoyable. ....because nothing here is true Italian. The bread and butter I would give 5stars for.

Stopped for buffet dinner but selection was briefly lacking. May be it was our timing as the food was very good as was staff. Courteous and efficient. Establishment is clean. Seating was SRO when we got there so waited a few minutes for clean table. Some items on the menu high in price but servings are large. Parking OK even when crowded. Will certainly stop again when I'm in the area. Family owned business I believe. Nice dining experience. Mid range to fine dining I'd say, never had an early meal there so cannot speak on it.

Sweet Tooth Cafe

I honestly can't say enough about this restaurant to describe how pleased I am when I have an opportunity to eat here.
We are originally from the area, and it's so refreshing to have such a nice sit down venue in the area.
Although Shamokin has the typical Chinese and Italian favorites, bars and fast food. Along with some incredible bar pizza as well as the local staple Coney Island.... the Dining Room fills a unique niche that was up till now, missing from the area.
Decorated in a 50s-60s theme and peppered with imagery of old Hollywood, the restaurant immediately catches your attention as unique. The sharply dressed staff is professional and friendly and very attentive.
The hardest part to describe is how you are treated and even the presentation of the food... is styled like a big city bistro. Yet, with the less pretentious and relaxing atmosphere of small town casual diner.
The food is always cooked well and everything we have had to date has been delicious.
I've seen a few reviews that mention slow service. I have never had that happen to me, and if it did, I'm sure that I would understand as they are cooking everything to order fresh.
So kudos to you Dining Room at Sweet Tooth Cafe, you are a glowing ember in what will hopefully become a bright future for the recovery of downtown shamokin and my 'go to' for home style dining when I am in town.
