Sault Ste. Marie /ˌsuː seɪnt məˈriː/ is a city in, and the county seat of, Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is situated on the northeastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the Canada–US border, and separated from its twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, by the St. Marys River. The city is relatively isolated from other communities in Michigan and is 346 miles from Detroit. The population was 14,144 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous city in the Upper Peninsula. By contrast, the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie is much larger, with more than 75,000 residents, based on more extensive industry developed in the 20th century and an economy with closer connections to other communities.

We all find quiet places out of season, but rarely do we find them in season. Our lunch at Karl's Cuisine was such a treat. The food was great, but the service was outstanding. Our server, Morgan, gave us all kinds of wonderful tips on the area. Karl's is right on the docks and across the park. Don't miss it.

Biggby Coffee

While I will drink coffee from anywhere, my wife likes latte's. Trying to find places that serve them in the U.P. is a bit tough unless you can settle for one from a gas station. But my wife was pleasantly surprised to find the lattes from Biggby enjoyable. They were hot and flavorful. Stopped there each day to get her 'fix'. Would stop there again.

My family has enjoyed this locally owned business for over 14 years. It was recommended we try it when we moved to Sault Ste. Marie and we not only became regulars but became friends with friendly staff and owners. We moved away but make it a point to stop whenever we are visiting. They are reasonable, and really fast. You get your money's worth and the burgers, subs and onion rings are amazing!

Clyde's Drive-In

Reviewed By nemigal - Tawas City, Michigan

Clyde's is a well-known fixture in "the Soo". In fact, we live 4 hours away, and when friends learned we were going they said that we MUST go to Clyde's. They were right. It's an old-fashioned drive-in with car service plus counter service. We ordered at the counter, and the server brought our meal out to one of the picnic tables. Great burgers, onion rings and raspberry malts. We were overlooking the St. Mary River, so we could see the freighters as they passed. Wonderful experience.

The Palace Mexican Restaurant & Saloon

The Palace Saloon is truly a Soo establishment, opening for the first time over a century ago. The restaurant has seen some changes over the decades, switching hands and even looks, but what has always remained the same is the Palace Saloon’s amazing food, drinks and its commitment to the local community. Although the Palace Saloon has seen several changes and renovations throughout the last century, some things have never changed. The beautiful mahogany Brunswick bar is still in use, and the caring friendly staff, the delicious Mexican and American food, and the family-oriented business is the same as it has always been.

Reviewed By parrottHead1960 - Pinckney, Michigan

Have been visiting The Palace for the past 38 years. Very little has change, the food and service has been good since day one. We always get an order of Chile con queso. The menu has a variety of Mexican dishes as well as American fare. Good beer selection.
The place gets busy in the summer and year 'round on Friday's and Saturday's, so there is usually a short wait.

Zorba's

Hotel recommended a different downtown eatery but as soon as I saw Zorba's I checked out the menu. Perfect! Zorba's offered authentic Greek cuisine at very reasonable prices. We shared an appetizer, enjoyed a glass of wine and had the souvlaki entree with Greek salad ($13.95) and the Gamma combo plate which included some souvlaki, spinach pie, a cheese pie and a tasty Greek salad ($13.50). On an extended road trip, it was so appreciated to have something well prepared and different from typical pub food. Definitely would recommend!

Frank's Place

Frank's Place is a locally owned and locally supported hometown restaurant that has developed a good catering reputation

Reviewed By Chattyaholic - Michigan

We had eaten here last year (first time) and really, really enjoyed both the food and excellent service. Sadly, this visit was very disappointing. We went about 4:00 so the restaurant wasn't busy at all. We sat down in a booth and waited. We almost got up and left as the waitress (Tonya) picked up menus but then stood by the counter chatting with another woman for several minutes before bringing them to us.

My husband had a pastie with coleslaw and gravy, he said it was good. I had spaghetti marinara with a meatball and garlic toast. The bowl of spaghetti had a half-cup of water in the bottom (I drained it out as best I could). I couldn't taste any garlic on the garlic bread. It also came with a side so I chose the vegetable soup, the flavor was okay but the vegetables were cooked too long and were mushy.

I had really been looking forward to eating here again since our first visit had been so great. We probably won't go back next time we're in town.

Lockview Restaurant

Across from the entrance to the Soo Locks the Lock View isn't just for tourists. Local people regard our whitefish as the best with our saying "the fish you eat today slept last night in whitefish bay". We prepare our whitefish and walleye many different ways: pan-fried, broiled, lemon-pepper, Cajun, deep-fried, Cajun deep fried, Cajun broiled, and lemon pepper broiled. We are more than family friendly and with two floors of seating; we can easily accommodate large groups! Open May- October!

While visiting friends in Brimley we had a Friday nite meal here-everyone had fish except me with liver and onions which was done to perfection. Waiter was great with a sense of humor, all meals good and the view, while not the preferred upstairs seating, was pleasant enough as it was window so we could see passerby's.
