July 26, 2017 Fernanda Pittenger

Peroj (Italian: Peroi) is a village in the Vodnjan municipality on the south-western coast of Istria, Croatia. Peroj originally dates back to the Copper age of prehistory, as testified by a necropolis within the old walls of the town. The town has been settled with families from a variety of origins throughout its history. During the occupation of the Romans, the town was named Pedrolo, and was a popular holiday destination.

For a while now I thought there we no good affordable places to eat in Koper. They where ether too expensive or too cheap.
But this location is a hidden gem.
Fresh and amazingly prepared food. The host will recommend something for sure...order that. Dont get stuck with the menu. You wont be sorry.

We came with high expectations for lunch and were not dissapointed! Great ambience, friendly service and above all amazing and fresh local food! We had the local soup (Bobici) and gnocchi and fuzi with the local Boskarin ox meat and the filled fuzi, and for dessert the chocolate cake.
I would definitely reccomend it to anyone in the area or even for a weekend trip from Pula or Rijeka, and even from Slovenia or Italy, you'll not regret it.
Prices are fair for the quality.

Antica Trattoria Suban

If you don't fancy eating in the more touristy areas of Trieste, just a ten minute drive will take you to this restaurant.
The service is impeccable, and the food served is fresh; and all in all a very positive experience. I can highly recommend the "salty pancake", which is a local speciality and full of fresh basil flavour. Another interesting taste was the pheasant gnocchi. The only thing slightly lacking, perhaps, would be the aesthetics of the dishes, but the taste makes up for that 100%!
The red wines on offer are reasonably priced, and the particular one that we tried was full bodied, local and delicious.
The Terrace was calm and relaxing, and the place is also dog friendly.

The food was very photogenic , some dishes were whimsical and delicious , everything was tasty , and the service was mostly great . Our only criticism was that the sommelier said our initial choice of wine was "garage wine" and dissuaded us from ordering it. Ok, but why offer such a choice on the menu ? ! We did take sommelier 's advice and liked the next choice . The five course tasting menu was very tasty and we couldn't imagine even more desserts with other tasting menu

Konoba Mondo

Reviewed By LaDolceVita27 - King's Lynn, United Kingdom

If you're holidaying in Istria when the weather is not ideal for the beach or the pool, be sure to visit Motovun, one of the most striking small hill towns in this part of Croatia. In high season I imagine it will be bursting at the seams; it was still very busy in mid-September although we did manage to find somewhere to park halfway up the hill. From there a single, cobbled road leads steadily upward and on the left, just before the top, you will find Konoba Mondo.
We were fortunate to have booked a table for lunch three days after the white truffle season had begun so it was difficult not to be tempted by the various truffled dishes on offer (including desserts). After a complimentary (truffle-infused) tapenade, my wife opted for a plate of 4 huge ravioli, stuffed with spinach and cheese, topped with a generous heap of black truffles. I indulged another passion with cheese ravioli served in a rich sauce of walnuts and Gorgonzola. Both pasta dishes were a bit heavy in the eating, tepid enough to suggest they had not been served straightaway.
For mains we had tagliata (sliced rump) and fillet of beef - both plates served with small roast potatoes, some grilled vegetables and a very generous shaving of fresh white truffle. Mondo still uses a quotation from a celebrated New York Times reviewer who enjoyed one of the best meals of his life here. Ours wasn't remotely at that level but if you want hearty food in large quantities, and you like truffles, you will enjoy eating here.
Service was slow - just as well given the size of the portions - and it was two hours from sitting down when we finished our main courses. Eating inside would be attractive in winter but not so much while the sun is still shining - however insipidly. Outside options range from wholly unsheltered tables through ones with parasols affording partial protection from bad weather to a few under a solid roof, which is where we were sitting. Unfortunately this was adjacent to the toilets but we did also get a good view of the local black cat posing for photographs with every passer-by.

NB One extra tip from the head waiter at Mondo: if you want real truffle oil go to the shop directly opposite which sells the genuine article rather than the more obvious places a little further up whose product will never have come into contact with the actual tuber.

Antica Hostaria da Libero

Locale storico a Trieste vicino al Castello di San Giusto.

Reviewed By opossumd - Cervo, Italia

Libero is one of the most original restaurants anywhere we have been, with an unmatchable atmosphere, fantastic food, spectacular wines, super friendly owners.
It is a historic venue, graced by the favours of the European intellectual élite, James Joyce first and foremost. A whacky collection of paraphernalia and old photographs covers walls and ceiling. The dark red hue suits the sanguine ambience perfectly, creating an appetite for good food and drink, which gets duly satisfied with the robust yet wisely prepared dishes, in particular the beef and the desserts, but everything else is worth trying as well. Libero has seduced our senses.

Konoba Dolina

The tavern Dolina, in the small Istrian village Gradinje, near mythical Motovun, is an ideal place to enjoy a home-cooked Istrian cuisine, unspoiled nature and perfect for an escape from the everyday bustle, noise and stress. It is only a kilometer from the famous Health Resort Istarske toplice, which is well known by sulfur rich thermal waters. Nearby are the famous picturesque Istrian town of Motovun, Buzet and Groznjan, and just half an hour drive away is the sea in Novigrad, Umag and Porec.Surrounded by greenery in the valley of the Mirna River, you can enjoy the authentic Istrian dishes, of which the most significant are the truffles that grow in the surrounding Forests. It is prepared with meat, eggs or homemade pasta, such as fuzi, gnocchi and ravioli. We recommend the minestrone soup, smoked ham and cheese, as well as seasonal dishes, asparagus, pork loin, sausages, along with a wide range of domestic and bottled wines. Here you can enjoy even in larger groups; well established tavern staff organize meals for about 50 people. It is important to emphasize that this tavern has access for people with disabilities, and young families is offered equipment for feeding children. Accommodation facilities are available nearby, in Health Resort Istarske toplice or in private apartments. Just make sure you do not arrive on Tuesday - on this day the tavern is closed. Tavern Dolina is the perfect place to enjoy in all seasons. So dont wait for summer because you are welcome here for all 12 months of the year.

One of the best outside Seating to have a coffee or cake in Portoroz. Used to be synonym for best cakes. Maybe we are spoiled, but chocolate cake is really very average compared to what competition is offering. Unimaginative, poor in chocolate but rich in price....coffee and ice cream yes, cakes are just very average and not worth the price.
