Red House Cafe

Reviewed By Kathryn M - Wyomissing, Pennsylvania

We were looking for a place to enjoy a light meal. They have small plates of a nice variety of fresh foods. They also have a full menu. The food was very good, service was terrific. Just perfect for a light meal, walking distance to The Seven Gales Inn where we staid. Tables are bit close together, but it seems to add charm to this local restaurant.

Compagno's Market & Deli

Reviewed By Bubuflu - Mission Viejo, California

Campagno's is simply the best place to get a great sandwich anywhere on the Peninsula. The bread is always fresh and delicious and the meats are quality with nobody looking at a diagram to figure out how much to give you. Whenever I'm back in Monterey I'll check in, get some sandwiches to go so I can eat them while I'm taking in the spectacular views of the area. I would recommend to tell them light on the mayo or no mayo in my case, because they tend to slather it on otherwise. OH, and this place can get busy during weekday lunch time, when DLI students flood the place.

Roy's at Pebble Beach

It's all about big flavors at Roy's at Pebble Beach. The Hawaiian-fusion theme places fresh seafood front and center. Sushi, sashimi and blackened rare ahi tuna are prepared to perfection. Lobster Bisque, Tosaka-Wasabi Swordfish and Mango-Jalapeno Encrusted Ono are to die for. But meat lovers never take a back seat at Roy's. Ginger-Scallion Crusted New York Steak and Roy's Charred Garlic Honey-Mustard Beef Short Ribs are only two of the many meaty menu choices. Combine that with a dynamic wine list and exceptional desserts and you have one impressive dining experience. Roy's trendy, casual and energetic setting at The Inn at Spanish Bay features views of the Pacific Ocean and The Links at Spanish Bay as a panoramic backdrop.

Roy's is an attractive and very good restaurant in an absolutely spectacular setting. While the food and service were very good, what I most remember is the overall experience....cocktails on the gorgeous outdoor terrace, the bagpiper playing, an amazing sunset, a beautiful table by the window, coffee and Baileys by the outdoor fire pit after dinner. What a great night! The macadamia crusted mahi was excellent, but the setting and experience are truly memorable.

A terrific local's coffeehouse. Do NOT miss browsing the bookstore in the back. The collection is eclectic and thoughtful. There is special attention to the children's section with a huge collection of Folkmanis Puppets to spoil that special child. Best of all are the fabric collages of Joy Colangelo...call her up to see a larger collection, meet a tremendous person, and own an amazing piece of art.

Pretty OK. Long line of people to get seating, inside primarily, we opted for outside in the cold for faster service. Server was spot on with hot coffee and tea so that was appreciated.

Food!
1. Twig omelette - it's the small version of a full sized omelette with the same price tag. Why is that? It's half the food, shouldn't it be at least cheaper? Tasted fine, but nothing to write home about
2. French Toast - Both the cinnamon bread and texas toast options were just OK. Not a lot a flavor, not the best.
3. Raspberry/Peach Pancake - was GIGANTIC! Was very good and came highly recommended from the server and the eater.

Just one question, whats the deal with the super cheap maple syrup? Yes, syrup gets liquidy when warmed but this was brown water consistency.

First off, we made reservations for 7:15 and weren't seated until 7:45. There is no place to sit while waiting to be seated, you just have to stand there in a cramped hallway, cheek to jowl, with a crowd of other waiting patrons. This restaurant is really, really noisy. Not a spot for a romantic dinner. It reminded me of restaurants in Manhattan, where real estate dictates that they pack them in like sardines. The saving grace, and the reason it is so popular, is the food. It really is very good. I had the gnocchi and it was as good as I've ever had. So the equation comes down to, are you willing to put up with a noisy, brightly-lit place where you will have to wait even with a reservation, for really good food. I don't think I will again. There are plenty of restaurants in Monterey that have great food that have much better atmospheres and actually honor your reservation.

The downstairs dining area is more secluded. We're happy to hear you always have good food and service on your visits with us! We appreciate your patronage and look forward to seeing you again, thank you for the review!
