Kaufman's Bagel & Delicatessen

Reviewed By Allen21096 - Chicago, Illinois

New Years Day seemed a little difficult to find an open restaurant, so we called Kaufman's Bagel & Delicatessen and they were open. You take a number when you arrive and head to the deli counter to place your order from the menu board that takes up the entire wall behind the order counter. We ordered two different sandwiches. The first was a corned beef sandwich, aka Moishe's Pupik, which came on corn rye with spicy mustard. The second was the the Skokie Firehouse Special which is smoked Turkey on chale with spicy mayo, hot giardiniera, lettuce, tomato, red onions and hot sauce. I must admit that I thought that the firehouse special would have been a bit hotter, but it was just perfect - just the right amount of extra heat. The sandwiches were ample portions. The staff is friendly and the prices are what you would expect at a good deli. Kaufman's offers a lot more than just deli sandwiches, including soups, salads and baked goods.

Co-workers sang the praises of their food for so long, and I'd never been. Finally, an opportunity presented itself. The staff was very friendly, but I was surprised when the first thing they said was, “Do you have a preorder?” I didn’t even know that was possible, since this was my first visit. After that awkward start, I had an informative discussion with a waitress who helped me choose an individual pan with sausage and a soft drink. I occupied myself with my electronic gadgets for 1/2 hour, after which my pizza finally arrived. I expected the burnt cheese around the edge, which retained the pool of sauce like a lake around small round sausage balls. The crunchy cheese collar and the sausage, as advertised with fennel, were very tasty. The dough wasn’t cornmeal, but it had good texture to support the ingredients above. Lots of cheese, which clung to each cut-off bite. Near the end of the pie, my tastebuds objected to the sharpening burnt cheese. Maybe it was too much of a good thing. I was certainly satisfied with the quantity and quality. My waitress had disappeared, and when I asked, was told she’d been reassigned in back. She must not have handed me off formally, because the waitress who finally got me my bill ten minutes later had been ignoring my table. A poor ending to what could have been a home run.

Nice, supper club atmosphere and packed on a Sunday evening. Food was very good. Only one side comes with your dinner, not two like most places so it jacks up your bill. Waitress was trying to get us to put their app on our phone. Please leave us to just enjoy our dinner. When we didn't want to "get the app", she seemed annoyed.

Busy place, large menu, great variety of breakfast options.

Our visit was on Sunday morning about 9:30 am and we had about a 20 minute wait which was reasonable considering how busy it was.

We ordered the Apple pancake to share for the table.

Coffee was very good. I had the meat lovers omelette, my wife had the vegetable omelette with swiss. My wife loved her vegetable omelette. My meat lovers omelette with swiss was good.

The hash browns were very good, we had them topped with cheese.

As many other reviews said, the Apple Pancake was terrific, definately happy we ordered it.

Service was very considering how busy it was.

All in all, Walker Brothers was a hit for us.

This is a favorite go-to restaurant for us to meet a friend who lives far away. This restaurant is between us and never disappoints. The food is consistently outstanding. I always get the salmon, and my friends often get chicken or pasta. All is great, and there is often enough to bring home leftovers. The bottomless salad is great - the salad dressing (a bit sweet and thick) is the best!

Arrived at around 4:15pm on Weds......no one person in the restaurant but my wife and I. Promptly seated, with a very happy server. Placed our order....I had a Baby Dutch which takes around 15-20 minutes...so we knew the food would take awhile. The server brought our drinks over and asked if we needed anything else. After 15 minutes, the food started coming out, but by a completely different server. Then the rest of the food came out, and that was the LAST time we saw the NEW server...why, because everybody was gossiping, etc., and not paying attention to our table....which was right in front of the window. Finally, I had to get up and ask for a beverage refill...then when I asked for the check, I finally asked where our original server disappeared to....answer..."she decided to leave". Think you better consider rolling out some new management of this place....if the servers and busboys have nothing to do but gossip our text....find something for them to do.

I see that in the Morton Grove Restaurant Derby, Pequod's Pizza has edged Tava out of first place.

We plan to check Pequod out, (and SOON) -- and I certainly trust all those glowing TA reviews..... but frankly, it would be like comparing apples and bicycles. I suspect it will be a tie. But, of course, the real winner is the dining public.

If you haven't been to Tava yet, DO visit soon. You are in for a genuine treat.
