Cucina Rustica

In 2017, we grew our family again, adopting two well-established and well-loved restaurants. Morganton-based Cucina Rustica and La Pizzeria at Cucina Rustica were opened by longtime friends of ours years before we arrived in Blue Ridge. When they were thinking of retiring, we saw the opportunity to own the land where our restaurants would live. So we purchased the two Italian-style concepts and brought in Danny’s touch with fresh ingredients and classic European chef training. Cucina Rustica is focused on a fine dining experience with Danny’s interpretation of Old World Italian foods from Sicilian fish dishes to Northern Italian pastas and everything in between. La Pizzeria at Cucina is your classic New York-style pizza place. A place where everyone knows your name and what you like on your pie. We love that – we both grew up with those classic places in our hometowns in Connecticut and Philadelphia.

We ate here a couple nights ago to celebrate our anniversary. We last ate here about 5 years ago or more. I had mixed feelings after reading some of the latest reviews but figured we would give it a try.

My wife had the veal and I had the pizza. The pizza was decent size and was very good and my wife enjoyed the veal. I wish they had a dinner salad with different dressings as an option over their dinner salad with oil. I also wish their entrees came with a salad but at the end of the day the meal was good.

The service was very good the waitress was very attentive. The entire bill was $65 minus the tip which also included 2 glasses of wine.

When I have visited The Black Sheep in the past, it was always good, but something was missing each time. They never seemed to quite get it all right. Recently, The Black Sheep changed hands and I gave them time to make the changes they were going to make to see if it made a difference. It seems to have.

This was the first time I actually sat indoors, as before I was there in the afternoon and the porch seemed more inviting. The dining room was very nice, yet a bit warm, which they adjusted after a couple of us mentioned it. The music was nice but way too loud for my taste. It was like dining in a bar.

The menu offered many interesting choices, but I finally settled on the meatloaf, as did my dining companion. Meatloaf is not really my go-to choice, but I am not a big steak eater (and they offered many) and I didn't see a chicken choice that appealed to me. One of the specials was mahi mahi. I didn't see or hear anyone ordering it, but I suspect it was very good.

I started with the beet salad, which was excellent, different beets on mixed greens with a few other things thrown in, with a nice light dressing. My companion had the house salad and it looked tempting as well. The bread for the table was very good, hot and tasty. It is served with Blue Ridge Olive Oil Company olive oil and balsamic vinegar. . a very nice touch using local companies.

When the meatloaf arrived, I was very impressed as it was a very large portion with a tangy sauce, that was exceptional. The roasted asparagus side was delicious. Unfortunately, my other side, the cheese grits were not warm enough to melt butter. They were very tasty, but should have been hotter. I mentioned this to our server and he offered to replace them, but by that point I had eaten half of them. Like I said, there were tasty, just not hot enough. I trust he mentioned this to the kitchen.

Craig, our waiter, was attentive without being obtrusive. Two different men stopped by our table to "check on things", but they never introduced themselves and we had to ask Craig who they were. He stated that they were two of the owners, neither one mentioned the grits. We were way too full for dessert, but I am sure they are amazing.

In summary, nice dining room with loud music. Great service from Craig. Excellent food (lukewarm grits aside). At their price point, this will be reserved for special occasions.

2 salads, 2 meatloaf entrees with two sides each, water to drink. . .$80.27 including tax and tip.

Have been coming here for years for the pizza, and also to the Italian restaurant next door.
This visit was a disappointment. Our classic pizza had no pizza sauce what so ever. None.
Just a thin pizza crust with cheese. Our wine was basic, and the total was $50
We are hoping that our visit next door to the our once favorite Italian restaurant is a better experience.

Girls' trip up North & stopped in Blue Ridge to shop around & have lunch. One in group had been there before and we still almost walked right by it. In fact we did walk by when shopping and didn't know it. When trying to find a place to eat we crossed the street & just happened to see it. The apple pecan spinach salad, basil soup, chicken salad, BLT and the Turkey, bacon & avocado sandwich were all great. We were there on a Thursday around 2:00. Not crowded and good service.

During a recent visit, my friend and I both ordered the blackened trout. OMG! It was fresh, cooked perfectly, and amazing. Accompanying the trout were black bean hummus, rice, delicious salad and green beans. The trout specialty changes seasonally. The decor fits the area. The restaurant is dog friendly on the porch. This is a stop you should make in Blue Ridge.

This place was so accommodating with plenty of parking, so very clean and quite a friendly staff that I wondered what the food was like. I was very pleased! I said I was looking for something different and when the waitress offered rainbow trout, I had to try it.

The grilled trout was complimented with my choice of black-eyed peas, yellow squash and zucchini and hush puppies. The lemon wedges were fresh and the tartar sauce was great.

I took a half pound of fried ribs for the road and they were good, as was the slaw! I told the waitress that I would buy and wear a T-shirt if they offered one!

Service was very good. Food- lots of country cooking choices. Our meals were very good. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating.
