Haby's Alsatian Bakery

We had heard about this bakery from family living the San Antonio area and decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! After making our selections, the box was not quite full so the young lady told us to choose six more to fill the box at no cost. Now who offers this level of customer service these days!?! Highly recommend this bakery and would go back in a heartbeat.

Castroville Cafe

Based on the TripAdvisor rating (#1), we stopped at the Castroville Café for lunch. We were not disappointed at all. The outdoor patio is very nice with beautiful trees around. The restaurant is set in an old Alsation house with a nice outdoor covered porch as well. The server was very cordial and helpful. We had the chicken fried steak with green beans & mash potatoes. It was one of the best chicken fried steaks I have had. Same for the mash potatoes, green beans & the dinner roll. It was a Monday so only lunch was being served from 11am-3pm. It is obviously a favorite of the locals. One gentleman, upon hearing we were from Houston, gave us an impromptu history lesson of Castroville's history. In fact, the Castroville Café sits next to the small parcel of land where Henri Castro had his homestead until the late 1890's. I would definitely come back.

This is the only restaurant in downtown Lytle. I was surprised that I was able to find good food in such a small town.

They offered a very nice daily blue plate sort of special. I chose the chicken salad salad with the homemade ranch dressing and I am very glad I did. The waitress was fantastic and provided great recommendations to our large group.

The staff are friendly and courteous. The bread and cookies are fresh. They have the standard menu and are quick in preparing their subs. You do not have to wait for very long.

Perfect name, "the little corner", for this out of the way restaurant on the far southwest side. It is actually in Atascosa county.just off 1604 near IH 35 on a street corner of Shepherd Rd. The restaurant also has a drive-through with a drive-way that runs through a portico attached to a grocery store / meat market on the other side. Pretty clever idea actually in that the drive-up customer's are protected from the weather as they pick up their food from the to-go window.
Food coming out of the kitchen looked well prepared and steaming hot. The carne guisada plate, chicken wings and beef street tacos we saw began to get the salivary glands working. We caught the smell of these steaming plates as the waitress passed us on her way to serve some hungry patron. However, we had just had lunch and stopped in only to cool off a bit with one of their lime margaritas that we had been told were good. If you like a lime slush, these guys were pretty damn good . . . brain freeze and all. As for the tequila and judgement in quality of a good margarita, let's just say it was a mix from a frozen margarita machine and leave it at that.
We ordered some shrimp a la plancha to go with extra corn and flour tortillas that they told us were homemade. Looked good, but later evening consumption will tell. Waiter service was good (helped to know Spanish) and cashier was friendly enough. Would have sat there and had another drink if I didn't keep getting brain freezes. They have a good selection of Mexican beers from Indio, to Victoria, to Carta Blanca, to Negra Modelo and all points in between. This place definitely deserves additional culinary exploration pending the results of our mariscos munching mas tarde.

Stopped by Sunday morning for a quick breakfast/early lunch. We all opted for brisket tacos. The default is flour tortillas which were fine -- but then I remember that my sister (who is from San Antonio) always recommends the corn. So note to self -- next time get corn tortillas. Either way - the brisket was great!

Pirates Cove

Reviewed By Tom W - San Antonio, Texas

Returned to Pirates Cove July 31st. There were new servers but they worked diligently and efficiently. The food quality is still tops and the cook knows what he is doing. They make a nice salad that does not require cutting the lettuce, it's sorta chipped. They also place it on a platter big enough to spread it out as opposed to a deep, or shallow, bowl. Very pleasant experience, as usual.

This visit was focused on hot dogs. It is a difficult task to stay away from the Coney. It has just the right amount of chili on it plus adequate condiments.
