L'antiquaire

Reviewed By vtp53 - Cotgrave, United Kingdom

Since moving to a new location, I feel this restaurant has lost some of it's charm. It is still in the centre of Laval but now on rue valfleury, in beautifully renovated premises, clean, modern and tasteful.
I had the set lunch there on Thursday this week and found it to be acceptable but not the best, nothing special. The lunchtime cost is a few euros above the norm and I did not think that this warranted the extra cost. Perhaps the à la carte would have been better and I will probably go back again to check it out.
In the past I have had evening meals there which I have always enjoyed very much.
However, I wish the young chef owner all the best and will be back.

L'Aromance

Stopped here having just arrived in Laval but were certainly not disappointed with our choice. The place was packed (always a good sign) and the Plat du Jour was incredible value and great quality. Service was good and limited English was spoken but staff were all very friendly.

L'Edelweiss

Reviewed By Wine_enthusiast - Chesapeake Bay

It can be very hard to find a good restaurant in France open Monday evenings. The Edelweiss was one of the very few in Laval and certainly the most highly rated. There are eight in our group, and since the restaurant is small we reserved in advance, probably a good thing since the restaurant appeared to be full. The location near the train station is nothing special nor is the inside setting and the service lacked attention at times, we had to pour our own wine and request another bottle when empty.
But the food was very good. One of our group had the Ravioles de Homard de « l’Edelweiss » which he claimed was the best dish he had during our entire two week stay in France. I had the Croustillant d’Escargots d’Entrammes, Persillade aux Fruits secs as an appetizer and found it a little blah but very interesting. I followed that with the Duo de Paleron Laqué, Ris de Veau poêlé sauce Morilles which again was very good but not outstanding. Later in the trip I had some sweetbreads that were the best I had ever had!
The rest of the menu was equally inventive and everyone enjoyed their meal.
It should be noted that the chef now owns another restaurant outside Ghateau-Gonthier in Azé called Le Prieuré that offers the same menu. We would have stopped there on Wednesday except it is closed that day. The setting above the river of this restaurant is probably far superior to the Edelweiss in Laval.

Le Salvert

Reviewed By QldTheresa - Brisbane, Australia

We originally visited this restaurant for Sunday lunch but unfortunately it was closed (exceptionally), so we made a point of returning a couple of days later. It is in a delightful setting, overlooking a lake which can be admired from some indoor tables, or of course, by sitting outdoors. The quality of the food is very good and the presentation is outstanding. We had the cheapest lunch formule (20 euros) which is not exactly inexpensive as far as lunch menus go in France- especially in a place that's not in a main tourist strip. It included 2 courses, wine and coffee. I had a seafood mousse for entree and a fish parcel (papillotte) for main course. My husband had mushrooms forestiere for entree and beef cheek on a rice stuffed cabbage leaf for the main. All of the food was beautifully cooked. The double shot coffee had a petit four accompaniment. This restaurant is certainly worth going out of your way for.

Tom Pouss

Reviewed By docgarlic - la Chartre sur le Loir

We had arranged to meet friends inLaval as it was half way between our home in la Chartre sur le Loir and their holiday flat in Dinan. After trying several restaurants that were shut for the holidays or about to close, one helpful owner suggested Tom Pouss as it had a reputatin for good food. Yes, they were open on the 27th of July and could take us, our dog and friends, but it would have to be lunch as they were shut for the anual holidy after service.
Five minutes before TomTom said we woud reach our destination our friends phoned from outside the restaurant "Very funny, good joke ,ha ha, so where are we breally eating?" They really thought we were pulling their legs and we realised why as we pulled up beside them.
Tom Pouss sits in an ugly shopping parade way out of the "centre ville" of a truly beautiful town. You have to drive past factories, garages and industry to find this complex of flower shop, print shop, pizza place and bars, BUT IT IS WELL WORTH THE DETOUR!!!!
With a few tables on the pavement, a good deli and wine shop and a tasteful, comfortable and inviting restaurant upstairs where we were soon installed with a cooling apero and menus. Ian wanted a beer, but they only serve it on tap and as they were closing that afternoon there wasn't any, but he was happy with a Pastis.
The menu was small but very interesting with only fresh produce and original recipes. Of the three starters we had two; an absoultely fantastic thicg pea soup with prosccuito and aromatic herbs and a roasted peach with foigras and ginger. Main courses of perfect cod or a young Guinea fowl, succulent and full of flavour with an unusual oriental leaf that I could not identify and tiny bits of cooked foigras.
Puddigs were just as inventive, mine was a bed of hot, melted brie topped with a crispy pastry case filled with chopped peach and served with home made ice cream then coffee came with delicious tiny glasses of fresh fruit coulis.
Drinks before, the three course meal and coffee plus an excellent bottle of wine all for the remarkable price of 80 euros including service. This was real value for money, careful and immaginative cooking and friendly service. I will certainly make this three hour round trip again. This small place has only around 30 covers and a strong local popularity, so you must book!

Visited here for dinner when staying in nearby Laval. Were recommended from our hotel and weren't disappointed. The food is beautifully presented and the dishes are quite unusual but everything our party of 4 had tasted superb. Nice touch is the little taster dishes served before, between and after the meal. Would definitely recommend. No English menu available but staff happy to try and translate.

Our meals were excellent, and very well presented in the plates. We were there at lunch time, they change their lunch menu every week (2 choices of starters, main course, and dessert). Desserts were amazing.
Service varied between servers, from smiling and caring to detached and a bit cold, but always prompt and very polite.
Decoration is modern, restaurant is comfortable, kitchen walls are absent or made of glass - so you can see everything that is happening there.
We liked our experience so much that we returned 2 days later.
Highly recommended.

The service, food and ambience is 2nd to none. Friendly accommodating waiting staff combined with fresh and spectacular produce made this an incredible gastronomic experience. The steak was cooked to perfection. The starters were huge and so amazing!!! Couldn't fit in dessert but my husband got the cheese. He was able to choose from a selection brought over which was a nice touch. Wine list is extensive. Very reasonable price wise.

Le Bistronomique

Reviewed By bob_the_moo - United Kingdom

Staying in a smaller town meant going to Laval on Monday to find anywhere decent open on that day. This led to Bistronomique, which rapidly filled up within an hour of it opening its doors – all with French people who mostly seemed local given that they often knew one another – a good sign. The second good sign was that the menu was not only small, but seemed to change frequently given the supplies – so it is written on chalk board. The downside was limited staff translation and no English versions, so those without any French at all maybe be careful. However the ordering was good, the staff helpful, and the food was very good throughout the meal. The busy restaurant had a good buzz to it, and managed to be small but yet not feel crowded in any way. Very glad it was not only open on Monday, but also that it turned out to be well worth visiting even if you do have other options open closer.
