i now know why there's always a queue to this little shop. i went early today and managed to get a seat immediately.
i ordered oloong chai which arrived bottled by coca cola! and the jumbo gyoza with pork, garlic, ginger, chives are not to be trivialised - they truly are massive, tasty and cheap for yen 360!

I had Christmas dinner here with my family and we were blown away. Amongst the 5 of us we have very different dietary preferences/ restrictions. The English menu is marked with vegetarian friendly items and there is a range of options from veggie, chicken, seafood and more. The atmosphere is excellent and since it’s a small restaurant we truly felt we found a gem. We ordered tuna tartare, fried soft shell crab, fried tofu, clam and tofu miso soups, yakatori, wasabi squid, and mushroom and cheese tempura. We all left full and happy. Everything was excellent and a great value.
Besides that service was top notch and staff was very friendly!

The Takase is located in Ikebukuro. It's 1 min from Seibu department store in the East exit of JR line.
The Takase building, on the 2nd and the 9th floors, they serve a variety of drinks and light foods.
It's not something like trend cafe styles but Japanese old fashioned style you can enjoy.

Tokiwa Shokudo

Reviewed By Barry C - Sleaford, United Kingdom

This is a busy little restaurant in the
main shopping street of Jiso-dori, Sugamo-
the old folks Ginza. Don't expect English
menus - all the food is listed on the walls
in Japanese and the waitresses don't
speak English!
Don't be put off however, because the food
here is very good, the prices cheap and the
portions generous. We visit here a couple of
times every time we visit Japan. Last April,
I chose Ebi - giant shrimps, which came with
a large bowl of rice, miso soup and Japanese
pickles. This year in October I ordered Sanma -
delicious sea pike. A very large bottle of Asahi
or Kirin costs only 450 yen and most dishes are
in the 850 to 950 range.
They make their profits on fast turnover, so it is
a place for a quick lunch, not a relaxing meal, but
it is an interesting experience for foreign visitors
and the food is very good. If you visit the Sugamo
shopping street, take the opportunity of including
lunch at Tokiwa.

Lovely understated yet highly rated restaurant in a nice little district of Tokyo. Book months on advance( we asked our hotel concierge).
9 course chefs menu with fresh tasty ingredients of the day- Heavily weighted towards exquisite seafood and seasonal vegetables.
Paired nicely with well chosen subtlety delicate fruit liquor or shoju and finished with dainty but elegant desert and green tea. Even scored a doggie bag of the most delicious rice made into takeaway parcels.
Greeted warmly by staff and even the chef waved us goodbye from the road.

Mutekiya

Reviewed By Eat-Ate-Type - Miami, Florida

November 2017 Twice
Since this place was quite close to the Ikebukuro Station I decided to give it a visit. Went after lunch hours, but had to wait in line for about 15 minutes or so. They have menus in multiple languages that also recommend items for first-timers which was quite nice. Also, you may ask for a Large serving of noodles for no extra charge, definitely a plus.
(2nd Visit) Early dinner, about 10 minutes in line.
Mutekiya Ramen: Most balanced tonkotsu broth I've had, personally. Not overly salty, oily, or porky the flavors melded well together to create a delectable broth.
Noodles: Perfectly al dente, excellent.
Char siu: Three thick cuts of char siu. I like the big cuts, but the flavor wasn't impressive. Too sweet. Although the Yuzu Pepper was a nice touch.
(2nd Visit)
Hontoro Tokumarumen: A richer version of Mutekiya Ramen. Tasted good, but I've had better rich tonkatsu ramen.
Overall: I loved the ramen here. The print on the nori to welcome customers was cute.
(2nd Visit) Prefer Mutekiya Ramen over Hontoro Tokumarumen. I'd suggest getting the former unless you prefer a richer broth.
Would I go back? The next time I'm back in Ikebukuro. Definitely want to try their other ramens.
Do I recommend this place? Simple, yes.

This ranks right up there with Mutekiya, my other favorite ramen place in Ikebukuro. I think the noodles here might be better than Mutekiya but the pork slices at Mutekiya are better. Both places deserve the highest rating. You don't need to order extra noodles unless you are very hungry as the portions are sufficiently large.

Midori definitely serves one of the best sushi I've ever had! The fish were fresh and every piece of sushi comes with a big piece of fish. The seared yellow tail, swordfish and scallop sushis are some of my favourites!
Be prepared to queue though if you want to dine here. The queueing up to get into the restaurant in itself is part of the experience; having to move our butts from one chair to the next one in the queue. The line moves very quickly. For lunch, we queued for about half an hour. For dinner, about 20 minutes. Until about 930pm, we still saw people queuing outside the restaurant. But its really worth the wait. GO TRY IT!
