Rydon Inn

The Rydon Inn is a converted traditional Devon Long House, it has been beautifully developed, with high vaulted ceilings exposing all the beam work in the main pub area, this also includes an unconventional thatched bar. The idealiac conservatory eating area over looks our large landscaped Gardens and peaceful lake which houses outdoor Seating for those long summer evenings. There is a pool table to keep you and the kids entertained. If you would like something a little more private we have our restaurant in the original part of the Devon Long House, which is ideal for more secluded smaller group meetings or dinners.

Came here yesterday with family for lunch. We were all very hungry and were pleased to find out the place, which was very pretty and spacious, was dog friendly. But it all went downhill from there sadly. Initial service was poor and unwelcoming. Ordered the pulled pork burger and wish I hadn't bothered.
Though presented beautifully, there was a catalogue of problems with the food.
The pulled pork meat itself was ok, but there was hardly any in the burger. Instead the burger was bulked up with a tasteless, bland pork pattie which had a very offputting texture and smell. It was very light in colour and tasted as though it had been microwaved. If you want food to remind you of 1970s fairground burger van, well, it pains me to say this is worse than that so don't bother.
The salad garnish was literally decomposing (you know how salad goes after you leave it in the back of the fridge for 6 days? Yeah, like that), the apple sauce wasn't in the burger, which seemed odd given the menu description, and made the burger even more hard work and boring.
The homemade coleslaw was a watery, sickly, bland mess and the chips were well cooked but were extremely tasteless - they needed a lot of seasoning at the table. I was ravenous so ate what I could before feeling very ill and put off. No one came to ask how our food was at any point.
A member of my family complained at the bar and all we got was a sorry, and no offer to compensate.
When I went to settle up, the staff had the audacity to hand me the bill with the full price of my dish on there. I said "I'm sorry but I am not paying for the burger" and the response I got was totally inconsiderate. Apparently I had eaten most of it (I hadn't), and the fact that I found it revolting was 'all down to personal taste'. This could only possibly apply if personal taste is decomposing leaf and low-end supermarket basics burger range. She offered to take half off, because I "said myself the pulled pork and the chips were nice" but that wasn't at all worth even a fiver. When I declined, she seemed to pose a threat by saying she'd get the chef, who never came out after she disappeared to the kitchen for a couple of minutes. She kept pressing that it was my fault I found it disgusting, until I had to counter her and say "either take the burger off the bill completely or I won't be paying for any of it." Thankfully she agreed to that.
I don't like to make a habit of complaining in restaurants, or leaving negative reviews. I am a lover of dining out and great food. But this was a terrible experience and I hope this review encourages dramatic improvement - it would be a pity to see such a pretty place continue serving terrible food.

After eating here twice very successfully in the past and totally recommended it,sadly I have to say it's gone badly down hill,I'll never visit again, I travelled 60 miles out of my way to meet an ignorant landlord and either his wife or daughter, who let us take a menu and I read out the special board to my partner infront of this odd couple /family to be told know food was available I was then insulted by old fella and young lady or wife so left totally avoid this venue it's gone shockingly bad in last 2 years

Reading the reviews I thought this chip shop wasn’t going to be that great. But it was totally the opposite! You have to wait because they cook everything fresh when you order it. The portions are huge and all served in boxes (which is great as it saves on washing up). The only down side is that the chips are crunchy (great) but greasy (not so great).

We went as a last minute decision to eat out. I phoned and they fitted us in. On arrival we were greeted with a smile and there was no rush to go to our table so we could relax with a drink beforehand. The food was outstanding, the flavours were to die for. We were asked if all was ok which was a nice touch and then had a couple of drinks after in the bar. We will be back again.

I have to be honest, the surroundings could do with a make over. The wallpaper is peeling and the decor is generally old and outdated. Like stepping back into the 70s. The two ladies in front of house are not entirely what you'd expect either however, they were both very kind and the food itself was fantastic which made up for the environment. Menus could have down with a wipe down as they seemed to have old bits of food on them but if you're judging this restaurant purely on the food, then you cannot complain at all. It was very good and the chef clearly knows what he's doing.

Called up to ask if they were still serving Sunday roast for them to say they usually stop serving at 4 but they will be serving until 5 that day - so I went ahead and booked to be there by 4.
We walked in and there was zero atmosphere - no music on whatsoever and all felt weird.
The man behind the bar said we could take a seat anywhere, which we did but then we’re asked to move to a different table (could have directed us to so table to begin with).
Even though no one was up at the carvery stand we were told we couldn’t go up just yet and we will be called over when we could, so we ordered some drinks and waited (with our tummies rumbling).
Some time passed and we eventually asked if we could go up yet, which we were told we could, woo.
The lady serving the carvery (the chef I’m guessing) was really friendly and gave the best customer service then any of the other staff. The food portions were good sizes but the food average. We were going to stay for dessert but we just felt uncomfortable in there. Not sure if it was just a bad day but not sure I’d spend my money here again

Quirky little caff on our doorstep, set right by a busy road (and evidently popular with hungry truckers), but with lovely green views over Holsworthy's Deer Valley, horses grazing in the fields, and a laid-back air which extends from the outdoor tables to the kitchen - beautifully decorated like some kitsch cabin out of Calamity Jane. Half expected Doris Day to come leaping over the fence there. Or maybe Mary Berry. The service is...a little hesitant, perhaps, but then, about 10 of us had just descended in one go, all trying to decide what to try from the gorgeous cake menu. Baking aromas from the on-the-spot oven are enough to draw in those looking for elevenses. Lemon drizzle delish, and the coffee had me wired up for the rest of the day. Terrific value, too. Breakfast is beckoning for next time.

We popped in whilst on holiday for dinner. We ordered the fish goujons for the kids and unfortunately there were bones in them which wasn't great. They'd have been better off just doing regular fish fingers than attempting their own if they couldn't guarantee fillets, especially when feeding kids. I had ribeye steak and chips which was OK but I have to say that the stilton sauce which it came with was fantastic, really delicious My husband had the scampi and chips which he said was overly greasy however, he agreed with me about the stilton sauce being really tasty.
There was only one person serving at the bar and one girl doing the waitressing who seemed rather stressed and rushed off her feet. There were only three other tables with people in the restaurant so not even remotely full but she said we might have to wait for the ketchup!

Filter Through Coffee Lounge

Reviewed By Gwen F - Devon, United Kingdom

This little place has a certain something about it.
You only come across it once in a while.
You can't manufacture it.
Or conjure it up by throwing money at it...like so many of the major coffee shop chains attempt to.

'Filter Through' is personal....it belongs to someone and they really care about it.
You can feel that the moment you walk through the door.
into the warm coffee/bakey atmosphere to a smiling face behind the counter.
You can see it in the wonderfully crafted cakes and pasties.
The portions of which ooze 'generosity'.....
They want you to enjoy what you choose.
They give you plenty of it to make sure you do!
My coffee was excellent and what was a simple fruit scone....was perfection.
(the butter even gets a special mention)
If 'home' was a coffee shop....then this is as close to it as you might get.
Its warm...comfortable...with a natural 'shabby chicness'.
This hasn't been contrived...you can tell its just evolved over time.
I'll be back....
*I would have given top marks but have to agree with another reviewer on the furniture in the main front room.
It is very large and chunky and overpowers the room....
I didn't realise there was a second Seating area to the rear till I went to the very charming toilet.
Might I suggest more smaller tables for two in the front room?
