Top 10 restaurants in Great Bend, United States

April 14, 2018 Deane Carmody

Great Bend was named for its location on the Arkansas River. There are vast plains, a national scenic byway that included enormous wetlands of international importance (Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR) and the Arkansas River to explore. Located on the Santa Fe Trail, Great Bend is the birthplace of organized drag racing and the boyhood home of a Nobel Prize winner. The Raptor Center at Brit Spaugh Zoo houses raptors, byway exhibits and educational programming.

This is adjacent to the Best Western so I expected more travelers. However this is obviously also a local favorite. The bar has a nice selection of beers on tap and a very capable bar staff. The service was effcient and the food very good.

Great Bend Coffee

Reviewed By travellingmagi - Wichita, Kansas

We were greeted immediately with a smile and very friendly conversation and an eagerness to serve. Customer service is everything in the coffee shop business and this one excels.

We were also shocked at how we ordered two muffins, a large cookie (all home made), a coffee and a 4-shot iced espresso all for less than five dollars.

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and looking for a good, local, coffee shop. Do yourself a favor and just come here and forget the others.

We don't have many places to get a good donut, but this is one of them! They are only open for a few hours each day (understandable - who wants donuts for dinner) and they're more expensive than big box stores, but they are delicious donuts! The cake donuts are my personal favorite, but the glazed are just as good!

Good food. Courteous & quick staff. We were there in the evening and things were quite. The dining room & order counter could have used a little attention for which there were plenty of staff available.

Perkins Family Restaurant & Bakery

We visited here early on a quiet Saturday evening. The restaurant was clean and comfortable, serving good simple food. My husband had shrimp pasta and declared it delicious; I had the tilapia and shrimp on rice which came with a choice of seasoning. It was beautifully cooked and very tasty. Portions were good too. Service was friendly and efficient.

Stopped here for breakfast when in Great Bend and the food and coffee were delicious. We ordered a simple breakfast of a bagel with cream cheese and they added green grapes on the side. A nice touch I thought.

If you are unfamiliar with Dairy Queen, they started out with soft serve ice cream cones and sundaes. They developed the Blizzard (known at McDonald's as a McFlurry and at Sonic as a Sonic Blast). A few years ago they bought Orange Julius and now have several Orange Julius flavors and smoothies. They also have frozen treats and frozen ice cream cakes, decorated to your specifications. This location has been open for a l-o-n-g time, so park your car and walk up to the window. A drive-up window was added several years ago. This is the closest place for ice cream on the north end of Great Bend and is conveniently located directly east across North Main of the Wetlands Water Park and Brit Spaugh Zoo.

Playa Azul Mexican Restaurant

Reviewed By saiza - Lees Summit

We ate here on a Saturday night for dinner around 8 and the place was packed. It seemed like all the locals were there and the place is giant. We were able to walk right in and get seated immediately. The chips were the thicker kind but the salsa was very good. The waiter was friendly and attentive. Coors light was only like a $1 for a giant glass. From there it went downhill for us. The waiter took our order and not like 15 mins later a runner brings out food, but only has her enchiladas then delivers food to other tables. We were all extremely puzzled why she received her food when the rest of us didn't have any. We waited like another 10 minutes and we still had no food. The cheese on her enchiladas wasn't even melted when it came out and she touched them and said they were cold. We flagged down the waiter and asked them if they would heat them up and by then the rest of our food arrived. I got the chimichanga but asked for ground beef and we were all shocked by the size of my chimichanga. In Kansas City, a chimichanga is giant, there it was so tiny it wasn't even funny. I paid $10 for a tiny chimichanga. My sisters enchiladas were still cool when they came back and a small portion. The only good dinner was my boyfriends who ordered the carne asada it came with two super thin steaks. The place was super popular with the locals and it was ok but $10 for small portions and cold food wasn't great.

Mary's Kitchen Restaurant

Reviewed By Marlene M - Great Bend, Kansas

Playa Azul is my favorite Mexican Restaurant. Their family members opened Mary's Kitchen. The food is just as good as Playa. Prices may be $1 to $2 higher. But the service is excellent and the atmosphere is quiet and calming. Most dishes nicely served on white square plates. Becoming my new favorite. Full menu. Food served quickly. You won't get through a basket of chips before your food is served. Not greasy fast food. Easily in and out in 45 minutes.
