We bought one of each type of cookie and they were all good. Best snickerdoodle I've ever had. We were there around 8:45 AM and most pastries were gone they still had savory croissants. Interesting spot with the bakery counter and backpacking supplies store combined.

Found the food to be GREAT! The view from the dining room was awesome. The cabin was just okay - a lot of money for a basic room. The mattress was terrible, didn't get much sleep that night.

Had a group dinner with our Backroads Hiking group on their outdoor patio. We were served generous platters of nachos and pitchers of margaritas for starters. Main entrees were delicious enchiladas, tacos, burritos, etc. and sopapillas for dessert! Great Mexican food where you don't expect it!

Ptarmigan Dining Room

The Ptarmigan Dining Room is arguably the premier restaurant of Glacier National Park. The room is vast and very much in the grand classic lodge style. My prime rib was very good and done as requested . My wife's trout was good but nothing exceptional. Service was satisfactory and friendly but there was a definite sense that we were not expected to linger and enjoy the view of the lake. Trust me, my wife and I are not the type to spend a lot of time lingering, but there was obvious pressure to turn that table.

We stopped here craving an egg breakfast something fierce but discovered they are pretty strict about the cut off for breakfast -- 11:30 a.m. to be exact -- and no exceptions. So instead we ordered lunch. Very good veggie sandwich and my first time having huckleberry pie after seeing it advertised all over Montana. Simply delicious!

The Whistle Stop Restaurant

Reviewed By LelandSisk - Garden Grove, California

Stopped by this restaurant on the way back from Many Glaciers, where we had done a little hiking. The smoke from the forest fires was so bad, it was a health hazard to hike very much.

Anyway, it was late afternoon when we stopped in. The restaurant was not busy and we were told we could sit where we liked. The menu is pretty good, and my wife and I chose to share a "Combo Pork Platter". The plate include a few BBQ pork ribs, a quarter of a BBQ chicken and a BBQ sausage. On the menu it says that if two people share a meal, there is a $6.00 charge for sharing, and we still get only two sides, which we shared.

Now, I understand that these restaurants shut down in the off-season and that the income they generate during the summer season has to carry them through the winter.

But seriously, $35.95 for the meats above, plus one corn-on-the-cob each, a side of cole slaw to share and a side of beans to share? That is, in my opinion, a touch on the ridiculous side. In addition to that, we had a sweet tea for $2.50, a slice of huckleberry pie that cost $5.50 and ice cream with it for $1.00.

That comes out to $44.50, and by the time you throw in a 15% tip you are well over $50.00.

See? Ridiculous.

For that kind of money I expect a beach view or something spectacular.

Ridiculous.

Just like a National Park inn restaurant. Beautiful old building, but slow slow service. Food is overpriced and was mediocre. My burger's bacon was good, but the burger and bun so dry. There was shouting coming out of the kitchen. We were directed to go to the lounge, then to the dining room, and then back to the lounge, and then back to the dining room. Then we were seated without menus. Bathroom literally had each toilet soiled with feces. I guess it's end of the season so they aren't staffed sufficiently. Beautiful building but eat elsewhere.

We arrived back from the boat ride and short hike to Grinnell Lake mid afternoon. So the Ptarmigan Dining Room proper was closed, but a light lunch menu was available in the Swiss lounge. It was the best meal in the park we had!

The surf and turf burger was packed with flavor and the bratwurst was also delicious. We loved the crispy, chunky fries, too. Service was a bit slow at the start, but picked up once our order was taken. And the food came out hot and quickly.
