Dera

Dera, the elegant Indian restaurant, presents an inviting ambience with its split level design, warm lighting, show kitchen and interactive counter. The menu showcases an array of traditional delicacies from the Punjab with specialities from Amritsar, Lahore and Peshawar yet with a contemporary touch as they are cooked in virgin olive oil. Mobile trolleys serving fresh phulkas (Indian breads), as well as delicious dal-tadka (tempered pulses), add to the enjoyable dining experience. Open only for dinner.

We recently visited Dera after a hiatus of a couple of months and were greeted with the same warmth as ever. However, our delight turned to excitement when we heard that they had just launched their new winter menu. Since we were a large group, we decided to give the dishes a shot to see if they were worth.
— Kharodiyaan da ras : This is the first 5 star restaurant to offer trotters' soup. Served in a ceramic oversized coffee mug, it had an actual bone serving as a stirrer which was quite interesting. The soup was pepperlicious and not to strong on flavours, which is how I like it.
Then in the starters range, we had the following:
— Kukkad di Seekh : These were succulent chicken seekh kebabs that we felt should’ve been grilled a tad bit more. Having said that, the flavours and aroma worked their magic and we loved these.
— Mushroom Malai Galouti : Amir Khusrow wrote this about Kashmir, “Gar firdaus, ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto, hamin asto, hamin ast!”. I so wish he were here to try these novel galouti kebabs that stole our heart away. If there is heaven in food, then its in this galouti and its vegetarian for all you know. Served on a tiny sheermal, these melt in the mouth galoutis had a thin layer of malai in the middle and were truly to die for.
— Pudiney aur Mirch wali tangdi were perfectly grilled chicken leg pieces that were marinated very well. I absolutely loved this and it is an excellent starter.
— Bhuney mutton di tikki were like the galoutis but made form mutton and a bit dry as well. I would still prefer the mushroom galouti, they were so good.
— Roohani Jheenga : As soulfully nasty as this may seem, these super prawns do not come from an aashram. They’re sourced from coastal south and are shipped exclusively to Taj here. And surprisingly, they felt as fresh as those in a shack in Goa. The prawns were amazingly marinated and to tell you the truth, these were some of the finest prawns i’ve ever had and that too in my own city, way too inland from the nearest coast. Food works its magic somehow.

— Moong Dal Pakodi, better known as Ram Laddoos in Delhi and UP were a surprising addition to the menu. This just brings back a lot of memories for a lot of people who’ve grown up savouring this popular snack in the UP belt. The pakodis are served, true to fashion with mint chutney, raddish and beetroot shreds in earthen ware pots and plates.

— Masala Malai chaamp is something that has gained popularity over the past 2 - 3 years. It shouts and screams, “Why should non-veggies have all the fun?”. The chaamp is fashioned after the chicken malai tikka and is supposed to take you there. Well, almost. The chaamp at Dera was super soft, melt in the mouth and was smoked like the galoutis for that aroma.

— Banana leaf fish is something that you find in coastal areas. This rendition at Dera was hot, quite literally because it used specially procured chillies from the south for that extra power kick. And kick it did. Fortunately, the piece that was served to me, had a lesser quantum of marinade on the fish, so was a bit forgiving on the palate. But those who like their food on fire, this fish is it. Its excellent.

The main course was again an innovative ensemble of flavours, both homely and earthen at the same time. If food doesn’t rack up your brain and bring back memories, then nothing can. This new menu works on many levels.
— Tawa Brain masala : This was just one of the finest bheja fries i’ve ever had in life. Bheja or brain is anyway, a soft and mushy thing to eat, both figuratively, and literally. This particular dish was just spot on perfect and was one of the my favourites amongst the lot. It paired brilliantly well with the olive naan that was served.
— Handi Gosht : Another winner by my standards, this excellent meat curry should be your pick if you like or prefer meat over chicken. The aroma, the colour and consistency and the flavours were bang on the spot.

— Tawa Murgh : Yet another example of excellence on the plate, tawa murgh is one dish i would always order at Dera and I hope it stays on the menu. The masala was not fiery and yet had the right flavours to work its magic on the tongue.

— Kabuli choley martaban was definitely not better than my Mom’s Amritsari choley, but they were somewhat close and were excellent in their own right.

— Handi dal was also quite good though I stuck my guns to the gosht and murgh and loved it all.
Finally, for the desserts, we had the most amazing Seetaphal cream, a sort of kheer made from Seetaphal, which is pretty hard to work its way around. So, full marks to the Chef for turning it into a fantastic dessert. The other superb dessert was the danedaar rabri with almond slivers and a dense consistency that I particularly prefer and like in a good rabri.

As always, the magnificent ensemble of Chef Rannvijay and Chef Yogesh have outdone themselves. It has taken them over an year to come up with this new menu and to get everything right. They’ve surprised us yet again with their culinary finesse.
When in Chandigarh, if you haven’t visited Dera, you’ve missed an important milestone. Try the new winter menu, it is bloody brilliant!

Perhaps the nicest restaurant we went to in Chandigarh.
Polite, efficient, clean. but not really for vegetarians unless one loves paneer.
8 out of the 11 veg dishes were with Paneer!!!
Anyway, after much discussion we managed to order Aloo gobi mutter (frozen peas). This was totally soaked in Oil.
The black dal was actually orange (lots of cream) but was tasty.
The Veg rice had not even been cooked. You are supposed to soak rice before cooking.
I tried the keema mutter- oh dear; like a stew.
The chef needs training- sorry.
Forget ever getting any brown flour for your rotis..
Surly Chandigarh can do better?

Loved the BBQ stuff on the platter and it was a giant one and covered length and breadth of bbq offerings from veggies to mutton to sea food. Only person in the family didn’t loved it were the ones who missed to join us lol. A super value for money as well as something for everyone in both bbq platters and main courses and not to mention the sweet after effects were well covered from ice creams to kulfis and from phirnis to pawns. Kudos to the team.

We are a regular here. The food is always fresh, hot and yum. The only complaint is that one finishes the meal by eating very ordinary insignificant desserts. When you pay high prices, service charges and gst. The least you can expect is a decent dessert. Who wants to eat fruit custard after yummy dumplings ?

Oregano

We went to Punjab for vacations in march 2017. After all tours to relatives, our final destination was Chandigarh. We wanted to eat something different (not Indian) food so we searched thru TripAdvisor and saw the location of top three restaurants in J.W.Marriott Chandigarh.
So we went for Italian , that means Oregano. The staff was really nice. They took really good care of us. The food was very tasty as well.
The only tiny thing I was bugged with was height of the table, it was almost up to my chest when I was sitting on my chair, and I am 6'1 tall so my height has nothing to do with that. A bit difficult to eat because of high table but otherwise everything else was perfect.

Virgin Courtyard

Reviewed By KomillaS - Brentwood, California

Enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Virgin Courtyard. Food was delicious and service efficient. Vegetarian options were plenty. When we came to paying the bill the problems happened, while they accept credit cards, they were unable to process the international cards, my friend tried paying with two different cards, that had been acceptable at other restaurants, they kept messing up. Finally we had to pay by cash.
So if you are an international person then be sure to take cash with you.
I have reduced a star for this
