Wanna know where the good spots are? Follow the locals and you'll find them here. Food is excellent--one of the best burgers and fries you'll ever have--and that's not even their specialty. BBQ is off the hook. Service is excellent and the place has a great, laid-back vibe. Owner is always on site and makes sure everyone is taken care of, etc. Right off Route 13 with plenty of seating indoors/outdoors.

Phone is 618-943-3394. Locally owned and operated Italian deli that's been in business for about 100 years. They don't advertise much and seem to rely mainly on local knowledge. Great Italian beef and other sandwiches. Pretty good cannolis.

Louie's serves the best sandwiches we have ever had from a deli, or anywhere else for that matter.
I had a meatball sandwich and my wife had an Italian beef. They were both superb. The cannolis were to die for.
Don't be in a hurry when you get there because it just ain't gonna happen. You will, however, have the best sandwich of you life if you just wait for it. They are very busy.

Loved it. Storefront is unassuming but interior is welcoming and Thai'd up. Food is tasty. We had the lunch menu. Portion is small-ish but was totally adequate to make us feel full. A bowl of brothy soup with vegetables, a large scoop of jasmine rice, a small egg roll and iced tea are included with the meal. Prices are very reasonable. All in all, a good find for lunch. Will definitely return.

Energy, Illinois, is a tiny village of 1,145 people located on Route 148 south of Herrin in southern Illinois. What is it famous for? Nesler's Polar Whip, a fast-food, cash-only, open 10-to-4 daily restaurant that dates to the 1950s. The Whip, as it is referred to by locals, is a tradition in these southern Illinois surroundings, famous for its double cheeseburgers and fries. My father used to call these kind of places "greasy spoons" and they usually were owned and operated by World War II veterans. There used to be three or four of them on the South Side of Chicago and my father would take my brother and I to one of them every Wednesday after going to a movie, usually a western or a World War II film like Battleground or Iwo Jima. We called them all "shoot-'em-ups." But we always looked forward to going to one of my father's favorite greasy spoons. The hamburgers were always tender and juicy and the fries were hot and crispy. That's the way it is at the Whip. Order a double cheeseburger and double BBQ sandwich with fries. The menu also includes onion rings, chicken strips, mushrooms, fried pickles, triple burgers, triple cheeseburgers, double hot ham sandwiches, double hot dogs and fish, chicken and steak sandwiches. Wash it all down with a cherry Coke or two. Nearly everybody who walks into the Whip seems to be on a first-name basis. Which only proves if you put out a good product, the people will keep coming back for more. Makes me wonder how they celebrated at the Whip when Herrin won the state high school basketball championship in 1957.

The food and service for a large family gathering of about 70 people was excellent. The room is to the side of the main restaurant, and down a few stairs, and the staff was very attentive. There was plenty of room to gather for cocktails and Hors d'Oeuvres. The menu had a number of entrees to choose from-I am not sure if it was the same as the restaurant menu, I had the salmon-- not a fish I eat at a restaurant as I try not to eat farmed fish. It was excellent as were the vegetables. There were numerous cakes to choose from, red velvet, cheese, white truffle, and chocolate mousse. And we could provide our own wine-- not sure if there was a corkage fee. Definitely a place to return to for a special meal

The owners have been to a lot of trouble to create the 1920s pastiche with old cars outside and some thinking put into names that allude to the speakeasy days. A pianist plays away all night "these foolish things", "strangers in the night", "poor people of Paris", street where you live". A young man took our orders, we had to repeat them, and he asked "wat" a couple of times. The bottled beers arrived pronto, the draft beers took about fifteen minutes with no sensible explanation, as the folk who were waiting walked around to find an empty bar.

The table were served calamari, tasty, peppered lightly, and a giant onion split and deep fried in batter, great heart stopping starters. Also some tasteless warm roll for slicing. A friend mopped up his soup with it and pronounced it delicious.

I got the Steak with blue cheese, not great, but the cheese lifted in, and before that a cup of the chicken enchilada soup. It was spicy and pretty good. I should have a bowl of it with crackers and gone home.

The bottled beer came to me in frosted glasses, so I was a happy bunny, but a colleague ordered draft beer, and after waiting fifteen minutes for it, went looking for it. The explanation given was nonsensical, the bar was unattended. The beer was warm and dead on arrival, no head on it, and so was it's replacement. The third was the same, so a couple of them were just left behind, so I guess avoid the draft beer.

It was a bit of a meh! dinner overall, nothing special. A noisy table of women beside us , cackling away loudly, didn't help I suppose. I found the whole service experience odd, a waiter came , took an order, never saw him again, he seemed a bit deaf for a young man, the waitress seemed to be chasing the orders, the cadence of the restaurant seemed off.

I wouldn't bother eating here again, but I also would not be bothered if I found myself there as a guest.

I was working late and my coworkers wanted a pizza. They were the only ones open. It is pick up, and can take 45 minutes at the wee hours of the morning, but the taco pizza is quite good. I will again think of them when I want pizza at the off hours. They do have a good reputation. Their crust is a little thicker than I like, but at 3 AM, beggers aren't too choosy.
