First, I am a Cajun and grew up eating Cajun food and I cook Cajun food. I am very skeptical about any Cajun restaurant outside south-central Louisiana. This place is the real deal. I had both the gumbos - seafood and chicken/andouille and both were superb. The seafood had a rich broth and tons of fish, and the country gumbo was flavorful and not overly thick. The crawfish etouffee was rich with crawfish and the gravy had a luscious texture without being too rich and filling. The consistency of the soups and gravies was just like home, and the flavors were authentic. My only complaint was they did not serve cafe au lait. Oh by the way, the cocktails were phenomenal. This place is quite a drive from Chicago, but it was on a cute little street and the restaurant itself had a lovely character. I'll be back.

We have eaten her on many occasions, mostly take out, but this place is AWESOME. Parking lot does get super busy, but food is definitely worth it. Best pork chops and portabella mushroom sandwich, they offer great sides, speedy, homemade service with large portions. You won't leave hungry & atmosphere is very fitting.

Patt and I stopped here after seeing it on Trip Advisor. I grew up in Cal Park and went to Eisenhower HS and I never knew of Iversen's. We went for pastries yesterday and they were fantastic. I could have had one of each, but stopped at two.

This Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robins is very clean. Servers are eager to please. Donuts are very fresh, and ice cream is not too icy.

For the people who have difficulty finding the place, turn right past the bridge around 134Th street at Western ave, go north and the restaurant is at the NE corner of Olde Western and Broadway streets.
Their tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas are exceptional.
Try their soups. You'll like them.

The demographics of our hometown of Blue Island, Illinois, have changed since my wife and I left in the 1960s. Oh, Iversen's Bakery and the White Castle still are mainstays in the community. But the Lyric and Grand theaters are gone. So are the Mayfair, Betty Herman's, Klein's, Woolworth's and Watland's. Blue Island has become more Hispanic and so have the businesses. El Ranchito Market is one of the most interesting grocery stores we have ever visited. And Molino Bakery at 13030 South Western Avenue, at the corner of Western and York, has become a must-stop place for us when we visit our old hometown on Christmas Eve. What is most interesting is that Iversen's, which dates to the 1940s, and relatively new Molino can co-exist because they produce different products. We go to Iversen's for certain items, like fresh pies and cakes, and to Molino for other items, like chocolate eclairs and German chocolate cake and flan and Napoleons and chocolate mousse cake. On our most recent trip to Molino, we purchased something new, a half-dozen chocolate covered strawberries. Molino also offers all manner of cookies and breads and breakfast rolls and turnovers. It always makes for a fun trip to our old hometown.

Beggars Pizza is a relative Johnny-come-lately to the pizza business. Established in 1976, Beggars has locations all over the south suburbs, from Blue Island to Harvey to Orland Park to Oak Lawn to Richton Park to Plainfield to Lansing to New Lenox to Bourbonnais to Mokena. And there are restaurants in Chicago--Wrigleyville, Midway and Roseland. And don't forget Indiana, Crown Point and Dyer. And Beggars also can be purchased at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox's home park. "We lay it on thick," is their motto. And that's for sure. Which is why I stopped going to Beggars after the first few occasions. I'm big on thin crust with cheese and lots of sausage. But I never, ever order deep dish pizza and I don't like too much cheese, which Beggars is wont to do. Beggars came along long after I graduated (1958) from Blue Island Community High School (now Eisenhower). It opened a restaurant directly kiddy-corner from my all-time favorite eatery, the White Castle on 127th and Western. But as part of our 50th class reunion in 2008, we arranged for a pizza party on Friday night before the Eisenhower/Oak Lawn football game at the Beggars at 127th and Kedzie, directly across the street from the high school. Well, I couldn't get enough of the thin crust pizza. I've been a fan ever since, though I must admit I am partial to Bella Luna on Dearborn and Superior in downtown Chicago. Beggars is all about pizza, small, medium, large and family size, thin crust, deep dish or stuffed. And how about the toppings, all 21 of them, including anchovies, chicken, garlic, ham, ground beef, black olives, onions, pineapple, sausage, jalapeno, Canadian bacon and broccoli. If you live in the south suburbs, Beggars has to be on your bucket list.

T & G Gyros

Long time Blue Island staple, this place is your quintessential little Greek fast food joint. The owners emmigrated from northern Greece over 30 years ago. They are known for their terrific gyros, smothered in FABULOUS homemeade tzatziki sauce, as well as the 'Big Baby' hamburger (greasy and delicious). No Coke or Pepsi, this is an RC sort of joint. Fries are cooked in lard. Like they should be! Mmmmm.

Dillingers have some pretty darn good Turkey burgers. They are often always crowded, but worth the wait.
