L'esperance

Last summer we had begun to feel the chef here was losing his touch. But our dinner here in June showed Gilles was back on form. You are lucky to get a glimpse of him as his wife does single handed all the front of house. The @€43 menu gave us a duo of smoked and (I think) sashimi salmon was attractive, followed by the sweetbreads with mashed potatoes. Finished with cherry vacherin. All excellent. Wine here begins at €35 bottle. The rose was good. This is a place to book for a special night out rather than to drop in casually for a meal. It is very small inside with just a handful of tables

Excellent food . . . a conference group had our final banquet here; I was expecting good food and limited wine. Au contraire! The food was brilliant from salad to dessert, and the wine kept flowing throughout the meal. The restaurant is in Bandol's only five star restaurant so I shouldn't have been surprised. Excellent and worth the stretch.

L'Ardoise

Reviewed By graham w - Dublin, Ireland

Have eaten here on many occasions but under the previous ownership when the food was better and the service excellent
This time the food was patchy and the service , admittedly at peak time on Saturday evening , was poor. We waited 45mins between entree and main courses. Then we were overcharged by €6 for one of the dishes. Underwhelming apology and no gesture like a digestif on the house.
Food was just alright - nothing terribly different. The 3 course €26 menu is good value however.
Given the quality pf the food and the charming service by Laurie at the next door Cote de Chez Swan , I won't be returning here for a while. Very poor wine list with overpriced wines and few 50cl or half bottles.
As there are many restaurants in Bandol who have upped their game in the last few years , L'Ardoise needs to take a look at itself and offer something a little different. The modern approach to lighter eating with small plates and sharing dishes doesn't seem to have materialised in France. Also the service needs to be tightened up with a little more charm thrown in !

Auberge Provencale

Family restaurant, kitchen "provençale"

Reviewed By Szofi76 - Budapest, Hungary

We went to this restaurant according to the good reviews and nice fotos but we were disappointed. First, we had to wait about 20 minutes until somebody came and took our orders. (the place was not full) We could sit only at the high tables (not so comfortable to eat) however there were more and more free tables outside the waiter said these are all booked, nobody came until we left around 21.45.. (probably these were tables only for 4 persons and not available for 2!)
We ordered pizza, perhaps we should had eaten something else, something more "provencal"... It was Ok, not bad but not more then avarage and for 12 euro ... Actually in Marseille the day before the 1,50 euro sliced pizza had a much better taste!
And please, if you don't use fresh herbs on the pizza then pleasse put much less dried oregano on the top, it's a little saffocating after a while.

Le Rendez Vous

Reviewed By LaurelParker - Hendersonville, North Carolina

What the hard-working young owners of Le Rendez Vous lack in experience, they make up for in enthusiasm and talent -- almost. The chef single-handedly preps and cooks every menu item in a closet sized kitchen while his wife greets, serves, and clears. The problem is, it seems the chef cooks individual dishes he likes or does well without too much regard for how they complement each other. Consequently, the menu design is a little strange and it can be hard to put together three courses that taste good together. The wine list needs some tweaking and the dining room is pretty bare bones. Also, when the restaurant is busy, meal pacing can suffer. All of those things being said, everything my husband and I ate there was well-prepared and reasonably priced and I would go back. Maybe in ten years, they will have a star.

After thinking I would miss this recommended gem of a restaurant due to scheduling conflicts, I was lucky enough to have a liesurely lunch (they are normally open only evenings 19h-22h except Wed and Sun).
I have been extremely lucky personally and professionally to eat in very fine restaurants and I have had some great meals. A few of these have been very memorable. I count this lunch among those. It is as much to do with the quality and flavour of the food (and wine) as it is The experience.
Although this place is small and unassuming do not underestimate this restaurant. It belies the reality that the owners want to make fabulous, approachable food that they would like to eat in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
The wine too is of great interest. Their focus is on natural wines and there is a solid selection of the best of these.
If you are in Bandol and love wine and food, do not miss this place. A warning, they are most often booked. Reserve ahead.

Du Cote de Chez Swan

Reviewed By paul_mcdowell - Dublin, Ireland

This is tucked away a couple of streets behind the popular sea front and is a small family run restaurant. A nice fresh style to the decor. Greeting and subsequent service was very friendly with a professional, but informal style. For starters, the asparagus with Parmesan was perfectly cooked. The other starter of Rouget was also deemed top class. The fillets de daurade were again expertly cooked and served with a nice sauce vierge. The medallions of beef were superb with fresh fois gras and heaps of garlic, a rich but wonderful dish. A plate of local cheeses were shared and again all in prefect condition. The wine list was local and short, but good value. This was a very enjoyable evening with someone in the kitchen who really knows what they are doing. THere will definitely be a return visit when next in Bandol.

Simply Corsican. The owner has meat imported directly from Corsica, from the family farm. Nice, but small, selection of corsican wines, if in doubt ask for the Calvi red, but make sure it's chilled slightly (say 14° or 15°C).
Simply presented mountain food, what more could you want. They have seafood, too.
