Altes Rathaus

Reviewed By Travelling-Wolfgang - Koenigswinter, Germany

On our last visit to the Altes Rathaus/Altes Standesamt they gave us a coupon so we were back there again for dinner this month.
I think they may have shortened the menu a bit. But there is still lots of choices with an emphasis of German and local traditional food and a seasonal menu.
When we arrived we were warned that there would be a bit of a wait (1 hr) for mains as they were very busy. Our starters were served promptly, though, so the wait for the main courses didn't seem as long (and indeed it was more like 45 minutes then 1 hour). The service was friendly, prompt and efficient.
For starters we ordered a pancake "Hunter Style" which means with a creamy mushroom sauce to share. Somehow the "to share" was lost in the order, but they quickly brought us a second plate. The pancake had good fluffiness, the mushrooms were tasty. I thought the sauce was a bit flat, but it was good after adding some black pepper (pepper mill is on the table).
For mains we had a venison ragout with potato dumplings and apple mush with a bit of lingonberry (nice touch) and pork medallions with onions (plenty) and fried potatoes. Both mains were very good (I don't think the potato dumplings were home made, though) and the meat was good quality. The pork dish as a whole was maybe a bit dry.
Mains don't come cheap (16 Euro for ours) but with the coupon discount they were only half price. So as a whole it was reasonable.

My wife and I were looking for somewhere to eat whilst staying at a nearby hotel when we stumbled across this wonderful establishment.
The owner at first seemed hesitant to serve is because she already had a pretty full restaurant. However she advised us to find a table and she would come to us as soon as possible.
Not only did she serve us very quickly but she brought another member of staff who spoke better English than she did. This charming lady advised us to have the sausage and cheese platter. It was amazing and I would recommend it to anyone.
If you are in this area, stop and sample the food here.

Also meiner Meinung nach macht man hier nichts verkehrt.

Weinhaus Steinbach

Weinhaus Steinbach is a hidden gem. It is located in a very old, 17th century house, with a beer garden in the courtyard. The interior is old and very original. The food is excellent and the way they serve the wine ... brilliant. You've got to try it. When trying to drink the wine you need to first bow to the wine - you'll see. Try their Bratkartoffel (fried potatoes), Tafelspitz and excellent Spanferkelhaxe (baby pig trotters) - very German and very good.

Haus im Turm

Reviewed By Eliseote - Bad Honnef, Germany

We visit this restaurant from time to time, we like in particular the setting. In winter in the Orangery with the big curved glazing is cozy and charming. In summer eating outside with the splendid english garden is an elegant and festive setup. These advantages are used also by groups celebrating like weddings, first communion, etc therefore it has happened relatively often to is that the place was reserved for private events so we had to look for other place to eat, so be sure to call before you go there.
We enjoyed always the food even if a couple of times it was not at the same level. The menus are changing, creative and not only South European
For instance we repeated last time one of the "classical" Wiener Schnitzel, schnitzel with veal and not with pork like in most restaurants of the area. Not so easy to get it right, crispy outside and tender and juicy inside. We enjoyed it! The choice of wines of this house is of course excellent being a wine merchant also.

La Grappa Trattoria Pizzeria

As you can see, the largest number of reviews are in German, which speaks well for the place. Our friends took my wife and me there one evening for pizza, and ours was excellent. We also enjoyed the wine chosen by our hosts. To finish the meal I had an intensely lemon-flavored dessert which was wonderful.
Everyone else from the party of six was pleased with their meals. We would return in a heartbeat.
