A Peixaria

This is simple restaurant where the grilled fish is the king. There is a wide variety of fish to choose, including good price small fish (like sardine, bass, mackerel, squids, gilded catfish) but also prime quality large fishes such as grouper, snapper, sea bream, scorpion fish and rockfish, just to name some of them. If you want, the waiter brings you a couple of different fishes to the table for you to choose. The fish is grilled on charcoal, outside the restaurant, close to the entry.
We were a group of 5 persons. We have chosen a 2 kg rockfish whose
name in Portuguese is "rocaz". It was outstanding! It was very fresh and perfectly grilled (which was not straightforward given its size). The texture and the taste of the fish were sublime. Delicious! As appetizer, we ordered clams. But contrary to the fish, the clams were not god at all: they were mushy, without taste and too oily. For dessert, we ordered a cheese pie and an almond based dessert whose name I forgot. Both were delicious.
We paid 30€ per person (with wine), which is not cheap as we ordered only one portion of clams and two desserts!

O Batel

A backstreet location and a good review brought us to this small, wood-panelled restaurant in very tourist-y Aveiro. It specialises in fish and we ordered one of the suggested dishes – an expensive prawn curry with fruit for two people.
Our waitress was sullen and we had to virtually beg for something green or vegetable-y to accompany our meal. They found us a dish of burnt garlic, cabbage and carrot and had the temerity to charge us extra for it.
The dish itself was terrible. Although the prawns were tender and well-cooked, they came in a gelatinous sauce bitter with uncooked curry powder. The fruit – a pile of pineapple, apples and grapes – had been added to the dish stone cold, so the whole dish was barely warm, adding to its unpleasantness. €30 for this dish.
Maybe their other dishes are better, but I'd be suspicious of anywhere that gave you fish knives and no finger bowls when serving shellfish.

First of all: Make a reservation, whether for lunch or dinner. We tried once without a reservation, and the wait was an hour. However, with a reservation the next evening, we were seated immediately. Our waiter's English was excellent, as was his recommendation, which was grilled prawns, which came after the fabulous mussels in sauce as our appetizer. We ate indoors, though they do have outdoor Seating, but perhaps not in the evening. I couldn't rave enough about the prawns, or the mousse, or the port. In addition, our bill was surprisingly affordable. We're spent that much in a Brew Pub in the US. This is a don't miss it restaurant.

Facing the local fish market and the canal dos botirões, at the heart of Aveiro's historic center, O Bairro is the place where you'll have one of the best gastronomic experiences of your life. Having tried another nearby restaurant the night before and been disappointed I consulted TripAdvisor more thoroughly for our second night's meal. On Reading about O Bairro's adventurous attitude to modern Portuguese food I booked by phone immediately in high hopes of a meal that would satisfy both stomach and pocket! We weren't disappointed! Although our waitress was a little severe she didn't lack any attentiveness to our needs - brisk and efficient service was the order of the day and I don't mind that. The food was excellent, especially the rightly applauded Risotto de Camarao and Prato Vegetariano. To complement the food we drank the waiter's recommended Lua Cheia Vinhas Velhas - excellent and only €12 the bottle. I finished off the meal with the chef's mystery dessert 'Misterio do Bairro' - I won't spoil the surprise but it was delicious! So choose this restaurant for at least one of your nights in Aveiro and you'll go away satisfied with happy memories. Costs was €65 for two all in.

We really didn't know what we were getting into here, we had driven up the coast in the morning and by the time we were approaching Aveiro we were REALLY ready for some lunch. I asked Google for "restaurants near me" and this one came up with some good review, and we said "why not!"
We were the only tourists in the place, but the staff was very helpful and the food was quite good! This is authentic Portuguese food, not some derivation invented by a chef in a big city restaurant trying to be clever. Nice piece of cod, freshly prepared with a nice sauce.

There is plenty of great traditional sweets in Portugal, all over the country, and in the north there is a big and widespread tradition of "doçaria conventual" (convent sweets). It is very hard to pin point the best for there are many outstanding manufacturers and we can witness this in a regular meeting fair of "doçaria conventual" in Alcobaça.
There is one manufacturer though, which can be rightfully set above all others.
We call it "Fábrica dos Ovos Moles" (soft eggs factory) or just the "Garagem" (garage). This is because it's really the factory where they are made but also because the waiting room for the customers wait in the comfortable adapted garage of the building they have been servicing Aveiro families for many decades.
Today it's no longer about Aveiro. They have become very recognized nation wide and are known abroad.
Any sweet you chose is going to be amazing but the most traditional is the "Ovos Moles de Aveiro" (Aveiro soft eggs). This is a very sweet but incredibly balances and fresh egg past which is covered by the unforgettable crackling white bread that is served in the Catholic mass service. The body of Christ.
I can say that this is indeed a religious experience and risking to be taken as a heretic I have to say this is the best way to have access to the 'body of Christ'. It is undoubtedly a divine experience!
