Food is typical Italien, and not to expensive.
We found this restaurant in the middle of the touristic centre of Altamura while wandering around. The entrance door was paved with certificates of amongst others Tripadvisor so we thought this would be more than OK. As Primi Piatti we took orichietto (ear shaped pasta) with vegetables (Spinach) or small tomatoes. That was really an excellent plate!
As secondi, I had grilled veal with french fries and a mixed salad. The veal contained to much greasy parts and was rather dry. The red wine was however excellent and for a fair price.
What surprised us most (and is a comment for all of South Italy), is that so little people that have direct contact with tourists speak any other language than Italian.... Also in this restaurant, although in the middle of the touristic center, communication with tourists is very poor.

This is the best restaurant in town for trying the local cuisine. A small and cosy family restaurant. Unfortunately closed on Sundays and make sure to make a reservation or come early during lunch. <br>My personal favorite: zuppa di lenticchie e carpaccio cotto

If you're looking for a nice place where to eat your pizza Birbacco is the right one for you. I've been here a few times and always been happy with timing, food and price. But the one thing you'll love about this place is the landlord, very nice and funny guy, customer detail caring, you won' t leave the place unsatisfied. At the end of your meal before leaving he will always gives you something nice you'll remember the place for..too...

Sono stato qui con la famiglia , di cio che ho mangiato antipasti e primi non lasceranno un gran ricordo. Va detto invece che la carne era meravigliosa (tagliata). A mio parere c'è un grosso neo, la sala apre alle 13.00 (cosi mi era stato detto telefonicamente), e a mio parere e a quell'ora che deve iniziare il servizio, non attendere l'arrivo di tutti (gli ulti mi sono arrivati alle 14.00), per poi con gran lentezza dei piatti portati arrivare a pareggiare tutti alle ore 15.00 con la fine degli antipasti. Sono stato in altre masserie è il servizio non è mai stato di questo tipo come ad u n matrimonio. Il problema sarà sicuramente mio ma sono andato via senza completare il pranzo. Gentili nel farci lo sconto.

I've been here with friends, me and my buddy decided to have a deer main course. We had a nice starter, two glasses of red wine and some pasta with deer and tomato sauce. I had wild meat before and I was expecting a strong taste, but it wasn't just different, the meat was definitively off. I complained to my friends but I didn't say anything to the waiter, thinking probably I was wrong. When we went home me and my mate, the only two to have the deer dish, we both had strong stomach pain. We didn't sleep a lot that night and spend much of it in the toilette!!! Don't wonna condemn the place, probably is something they don't sell a lot, a mistake can happen, but they need to be careful. Would come back but I feel a little scared to be honest!

Found by chance while we were trying not to get drenched from Palazzo Baldassarre to the main square, we could not imagine that ours was good luck. The place is modern without forgetting the traditions, well kept, clean, offering a menu that redescovers old local plates. The orecchiette with sausage and mushrooms were lovely. The stew as well. Unfortunately we were ashamed of ordering a dessert as well... Pizza also at lunch.

This place offers genuine food at a good price. All freshly cut meats are provided by the proud owner 's mum from the butcher shop just round the corner. We stopped for lunch at Altramura but tripadvisers best restaurant was closed that day. So we asked several locals. They said we should go and eat at this (butchers) restaurant not far from the raliway station. And how well we have eaten there! We made a de-tour the next day to stop for a quick lunch again. Two lunches including some wine come for 40 Euro. Delicious bread and pasta dishes and very modern local dishes, no one could improve. I ll be back!

We were driving from Matera to Bari and tried to find a lunch stop on a Sunday afternoon. We were directed to this restaurant for a pleasant surprise. The waiter, who I assume is the owner or manager started offering suggestions "you trust me" and the dishes started coming for sharing. This would have been a very nice place to come for a relaxing dinner. The food was quite good, prices reasonable and the service was great. To bad it was just a quick stop as it would have been a nice place to enjoy a bottle of wine.

At about 6 km from the town of Altamura, immersed in the bucolic country beauty of Puglia lays "La Calcara" Farmhouse, built circa 1800. It is an agricultural farm where sheeps and goats are raised in the most natural fashion to produce the utmost natural cheese products of the best quality.
The facility also has various rooms decorated in a "poor art" style, where visitors can feel cozy and embraced in a rustic, rural ambience, away from any kind of city noises immersed in a total silence. The facility hosts agritourism and retreats for people and businesses who like to recharge, restore and rejuvenate.
While I was there visiting, a delicate aroma from the kitchen filled our senses. They were cooking typical Puglia country food and judging by the smell I can just say that the food was going to be divine!
The facility, the animal farm, the cheese production and the rooms are kept immaculate.
The owner Gaetano is a delightful person, very friendly and hospitable and all the people I met on that day in the Masseria La Calcara greeted us with a big smile.
