Top 10 restaurants in Alesund, Norway

October 22, 2017 Venice Greaves

Perched at the top of Norway’s Western Fjord country, picture-perfect Alesund is spread over several islands stretching into the Atlantic, with the spectacular Sunnmøre Mountains as a backdrop. If its natural beauty doesn’t grab you, its architecture surely will: After an early 20th-century fire destroyed much of the town, Alesund was rebuilt in absolute Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) glory. Learn the history at Aalesunds Museum, or visit one of the world’s largest aquariums, the Atlanterhavsparken.

Excellent location with view over the harbour. If you go you should try the bacalao which is the restaurants speciality and food with roots to Ålesund. The place is always crowded, so I recommend booking a table in advance.

By Brosundet canal you can enjoy exquisite seafood at Sjobua Fiskerestaurant. The courses are made in accordance with the areas food traditions. Tanks inside the restaurant keep the fish fresh. Sjobua Fiskerestaurant is situated in a renovated warehouse used for fish processing. Here you can enjoy a delicious sortiment of courses with fish and shellfish, made from fresh raw materials. Try tasty meals with for instance monkfish, cod, halibut, catfish and stingray. Fishing boats deliver fresh crabs and lobsters to the restaurant, and they are kept in crab pots outside in Brosundet canal. Inside the restaurant there are also special tanks where live shellfish and fish are held, so the guests are treated to fresh seafood of the highest quality, and a beautiful view of Brosundet canal from the restaurants gives a pleasant setting for the meal.

Decided to try this place after having dinner at Maki the night before.
Big dining place with a larger menu.
Service was ok for us since we were the first diners just after 6pm but started to get slow from 7.30pm when most diners came.
Tried the lobster soup with puff pastry which was suppose to be the highlight but to me tested like instant or ready made from the supermarket.
The fish soup was much better but Maki restaurant offers a much better fish soup.
We tried the Monk Fish ( tough meat) and Cod Fish (much better choice). But both came with too much sauces and 2 to 3 pieces of mussels, n prawns ( kind of unusual). Not much of a presentation.
Both restaurants cater to locals and thats how you survive since the locals are regulars compared to the summer tourists. But we did not feel any difference in service.
Just go to Maki and I think you will enjoy a better seafood dinner.

Having guided a group of tourists to this cafe, we enjoyed the film on the Great Ålesund fire in 1904. Then we inspected the great display on the first floor. The coffee & cakes was also great value. But do not forget the display area in the basement.

Subtle change of name and suddenly this restaurant has two sets of reviews in TripAdvisor.
It's an intentionally quirky little place with interesting art and funny cacti on the tables.
Food focuses on burgers and almost Americana type foods. They're done well. The staff are friendly and helpful.

I took a hike to the top of the hill for magnificent views, which made me worn out!
I was not convinced of food served at such a touristy cafe restaurant, but gave it a try anyway. It was a nice surprise, the "best fish soup" was really the best. I really enjoyed the quick meal overlooking the beautiful lights in the town.
