Duval St. feels like the best of a combination of La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain, Cape May ,NJ, New Hope, PA, and Bourbon St. in New Orleans. A 1.25-mile strip of great shops, bars, restaurants, and people watching. The town felt very safe to walk even at night and has a great vibe. Many of the attractions you want to see are on Duval or a short walk from it. It can get very crowed so if you plan on walking and are in a rush, take one of the parallel streets; either Whitehead or Simonton.

While walking the main Duval St. among a lot of other attractions you'll spot this eye catching theater edifice. It dates back to last century 20's when it was really a theater. When approaching it closely you'll realize it's a Walgreens pharmacy (although it's written above in the performing space ad, but you don't pay attention to it). This is the most beautiful retail space of Walgreens I've ever seen, and the first one to write a review about. So glad they kept that facade. Terrific photo op.

The Veterans Memorial garden is a short walk north of the Key West cemetery on Truman Avenue. At the entrance to the park is a memorial to the 90th and 91st New York regiments that perished mainly from yellow fever. It is a concrete monument with a square base which lists the dead soldiers and has a urn shaped symbol at the top. These troops were in Key west during the civil war to strengthen the defences of Fort Taylor, Fort Jefferson and the East Martello Tower Forts. More than 300 soldiers died of the yellow fever epidemic between 1862-1865. There is a civil war monument in Clinton Square which should also be visited. The next section of the memorial, features story boards of the different wars and statistics of dead soldiers. These include; American war of Independence, Great Britain war, Civil war, Spanish American war, WW1, WW2, Korean war, Vietnam war, Gulf war, Iraq war and Afghanistan war. A purple heart memorial is also in this section and a few personalised tiles with names of soldiers. These tiles were probably paid for by the families of the soldiers. The main section of the park is the Vietnam memorial. This includes a semi circular wall with reliefs relating to the war, and a sculpture of a soldiers boots, gun and helmet, known as the fallen soldier battle cross. This memorial is dedicated to the 360 soldiers from Key West who fought in Vietnam, and it was installed in 1968.The nearby "All Gave Some, Some Gave All" monument, is dedicated to the 36 soldiers from Key west who died in Vietnam. The names of these soldiers are listed on the monument. The semi circular wall also has a list of the Key West soldiers who fought in the war, a map of the battle zones and a dedication to those soldiers who still are unaccounted for. A short walk from the Vietnam monument is a sculpture of a soldier from the Union Army. The soldier stands with rifle at his side and arm upraised. He represents the 2nd South Carolina regiment headed by Colonel James Montgomery, which had recruits from Key West.If you continue walking in an easterly direction, the memorial to Jose Marti will come into view. It is probably best photographed from the side, as the front view is partially blocked by palm trees. The monument consists of a white columnar base on which a bust of Jose Marti is placed. There are steps on either side of the monument. The Cuban coat of arms is displayed in black on the front of the base, and the year of installation (1926) is also shown. To the right side of the base, are the years of Jose Marti's life (1853-1895), and the plaque celebrates the 100th anniversary of his death in 1995. We thought that the memorial park was well done, although a little far from the central area of town. It is a hot walk, but on a regular bus route.
