Set between Rome and Naples amid the so-called Ulysses Riviera, gorgeous Gaeta overlooks the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea. Its history as a resort dates back to Imperial Rome. Nearby sites include the first-century BC mausoleum of general Lucius Munatius Plancus. Gaeta

Reviewed By pamgooder - Waialua, United States

If you like historic places, and are looking for an out of the way place, that is less crowded, less touristy, and the with real Southern Italy charm, then Gaeta is the place for you. There are Roman ruins, small museums, and historic old Gaeta. Sperlonga close by also has a museum and Roman ruins and grotto. There are several very affordable, clean and renovate bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals close to the beach, or with ocean views. Gaeta is a delight discovery. I was there during the Christmas festival of lights, which was a special treat. Wednesday is market day, if you like local open markets. Stenta is the best pastry shop in Gaeta with two locations.
