Top 10 Performances in Province of Granada, Andalucia

February 16, 2022 Natalie Tallman

There’s an Arabic inscription that captures the essence of Granada in a few words: “There is nothing so sad as to be blind in Granada.” The perspicacity of this declaration becomes obvious as soon as you penetrate the austere walls of the Alhambra and take in the full majesty of the architecture, carvings and fountains of the Nasrid palaces. Your ticket (which should be bought well in advance following the instructions on the attraction’s website) also affords entry to the Renaissance Palace of Carlos V and to the exquisite gardens of the Generalife. If you are celebrating a special event, or are in the market for a splurge, you can stay in the lovely Parador, right on site. Make your way down into the city via the atmospheric old quarter of the Albaicin, with its tiny craft shops and restaurants, and head for the Cathedral and Royal Chapel. Also plan a visit to the crypt for the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, the instigators of Spain’s imperial adventures to the New World and beyond. It’s worth making the short journey out of town to visit the Monasterio Cartuja, a fabulous Carthusian monastery in the baroque style. Admirers of the poet Lorca should make the effort to visit the Casa-Museo Federico Garcia Lorca in Fuente Vaqueros, about 11 miles from the city centre.

This tiny place in Albaicin would be easy to miss if you didn't know it was there. It's basically someone's house with a tiny reception area at the front and a seating area for about twelve people in the back room where the music is performed. On the night we went there was a guitarist and cantor who were, quite simply, mesmerizing. Their musicianship and obvious love of real flamenco came through in every piece played and the intimacy of the venue added to the memorable experience. Truly unforgettable - thank you Jacob, Marcus and hosts.

This was definitely one of the highlights of our two-week tour through southern Spain. I would definitely recommend this as the flamenco option if you have to pick one in your trip. The venue is so unique and intimate compared to other shows I have seen advertised and a show we also saw in Seville that was in a more typical stage-like venue. The dancers and musicians had a real energy and genuine sense of connection and joy about them the entire time. The music was fantastic and the dancing was moving and exhilarating. On top of that, they include pick-up and drop-off, which makes it super convenient (I would advise this option not only for convenience but also, at least for us, we got there just before the show started so we got to sit along the walls that gave us a really close-up view of the entire show). This experience will stay with me forever. I loved it!

This small venue put on a world class show. The four performers (guitarist, singer, male and female dancers) were outstanding, and created an atmosphere of incredible intensity of emotion, reinforced by their superb technical abilities. This is a show not to be missed. The performance lasted about an hour which was just right.

La Casa De Bernarda Alba

La Böhemia proposes a cycle of dramatized visits that offer the unique experience of seeing, hearing and living within the walls of La Casa de Bernarda Alba, this universal text by the distinguished poet of Granada. With these visits, the exhibition of the House-Museum that the city of Valderrubio has prepared for the enjoyment of the world is enriched. For about 50 minutes The House of Bernarda Alba will come alive recreating part of the history of these women, between the walls that imprisoned them, making the visitor participate in the torpor, the sorrow and the tyranny of the power of a mother who, in the words of La Poncia: "they are and live as if they were in Alacenas". A videomaping, some actresses and some white walls that ... if they will talk! They will guide you through an exclusive trip to the center of Federico's heart and literature. A VITAL EXPERIENCE You will enter the only temple where the BERNARDA ALBA de Lorca reigned.
