We were originally planning to visit Tāne Mahuta, but that was a bit too much of a drive from our Paihia accommodation so we opted to visit this forest walk instead. We're glad we did too as we've not seen a kauri forest before and we were impressed by the scale of the trees. Apart from the 3-4km of gravel road to get there, this is a beautiful spot that's an easy walk in a serene setting. Well worth a visit.

This must be one of the nicest walks so close to town in the whole of New Zealand. Start at Rainbow Falls (off Waipapa Road) and saunter along the river bank to the Kerikeri Basin. It takes less than an hour and there’s much to see at the finish, including New Zealand’s oldest stone building. And a pub! What more can you ask for?

This short walk is an easy way to view large Kauri and was thoroughly enjoyable. The walkway is a piece of cake for any age and the road in and out is not bad at all.
