Taipei Zoo

The largest zoo in Asia, this was original a private zoological garden. The giant panda house, Formosan animal area, koala house and Asian tropical rainforest area are of particular note.

Taipei Zoo opens from 9-5pm eaily accessible via MRT Brown line, exit Taipei Zoo Station. The zoo ticket, in my humble opinion, is quite cheap NT 60 for adults while preschoolers (age 6 and below) enter free, can easily be paid via Easy Card. The first section we went was Panda House. There were two Pandas, TuanTuan and YuanYuan (their names means reunion in chinese, by the way) We managed to see both, one was in indoor and the other outdoor. Both were very active. Next, we went around, the Bird World, the Amphibian/ Reptiles House and the Penguin House (mostly indoor as it was raining) Lots of snack shops and toilets available. It is a large zoo and our legs were tired walking around, hence we took the shuttle train (single ride: NT5) to Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo South Station (operates from 9am-4pm) and took the Gondola to Mao Kong. Note: Some indoor exhibits in Taipei Zoo (Including the Panda House) may close on Monday, therefore go on other days.

Maokong mountain

The Maokong gondola stops at Taipei Zoo, Zhinan Temple and the Maokong station. The Maokong station stop at the top of the mountain offers a panoramic view of the city and visitors can try delicacies like noodles with tea oil and glutinous rice with bamboo shoots.

A very enjoyable day trip taking the cable car from Taipei Zoo MRT Station to Maokong where there are several short hiking trails with waterfalls and brooks. We saw many butterflies and dragonflies and came across miniature crabs, as well as many interesting plant species. There were a few steep flights of stairs along the way but overall, the hiking trails are relatively safe and easy to walk. For lunch we ate at a restaurant on the main road with tea-themed dishes such as tea fried rice and tea-smoked duck. While you are here in tea country, it is worth visiting a tea house and have tea prepared for you with pomp and ceremony while you enjoy the spectacular mountain views. The tea house experience is not exactly cheap and depends on the quality of tea that you have chosen. As it was a hot day, we also stopped for some refreshing tea jelly and oolong tea ice cream. We were very lucky to be able to get down by cable car as well because it started raining and the service was then suspended due to thunderstorm activity.

Xinglong Park

The center of attraction of Xinglong Park is the scenic lake. The lake is modeled after an ancient style, with dripping willow and shady trees, portraying a poetic atmosphere, which is one of the characteristics of the park. It also has an artificial hill, fountain, leisure paths by the side of the lake and an arch bridge in the center of it. This scenic park with a classical style has attracted many wedding photographers coming here to capture shots of the new couples. Northeast of the lake is the park monument; to the north is a children’s playground as well as a new basement car park built by the Parking Management Office. It is hoped that the public can enjoy more parking space and better service. In the park, there are trees like melaleuca, banyan tree, maple tree, alstonia scholaris, lagerstroemia, floss-silk tree, bauhinia, cherry blossom and coconut. With the shade provided by these trees, as well as the stone tables and chairs provided by the public for the people to rest; the park has attracted more people coming here to exercise and kick back in leisure. The public has also taken the initiative in maintaining the cleanliness and space of this recreational space. Whenever the golden evening sun shines on the entire park, it gives the impression that one is immersed in a rustic rural countryside. If you come here at the right time, you will enjoy these moments of peace… the tranquility begins here. The park is well recommended for its convenient location and accessibility, and a comfortable distance from the bustling crowd.
