Top 10 Nature & Parks in Downtown, California (CA)

June 5, 2021 Osvaldo Hartline

San Diego embodies laid-back California culture, complete with a Boardwalk, surfing communities, and outstanding Mexican food. Breathe in the fresh ocean air at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, then gobble down a fresh fish taco at a La Jolla seafood joint. The naval aircrafts at the USS Midway Museum will have you standing at attention. A free Sunday concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is the perfect way to unwind after a Saturday night bar-hop in the thumping Gaslamp Quarter.

Mission Beach Boardwalk

Biking, jogging and skating on San Diego's scenic waterfront path is popular with tourists and locales alike.

This was a great place! We spent a week right on the beach boardwalk. It’s a beautiful location right along the ocean. It’s great for walking, bike riding and scooter rentals. Belmont park right on the boardwalk is a fun place to visit.

Harbor and Shelter Islands

Two scenic islands in San Diego bay that offer a variety of restaurants, hotels and water sports such as scuba and fishing excursions.

Reviewed By GlobalGypsy_13 - San Diego, United States

Although both is these islands have hotels and restaurants, I prefer to walk Shelter Island as it's also a working yard for boaters. In addition to sweeping views of San Diego Bay you can fish from the public pier or reflect on the community of 3 Portuguese fishermen pulling out a large tuna together that are immortalized in a statue.

Torrey Pines State Beach

On a cold, nippy December morning this beach was nearly empty except for birds. Brown Pelicans swooped overhead, Red Knots fed along the surf. And small unknown birds darted through and over the rocks. What a glorious escape from the anxieties of the current Covid-19!

Bright iron sculptures twist up from the ground as if they were a strange new variety of plant life.

In the heart of Balboa Park art comes alive with 2 Niki de Saint Phalle pieces in front of the Mingei Museum and several modern sculptures in the patio area by the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA). If you go through their outdoor café area of SDMA, you'll come to an open air grassy area with more modern pieces including ones by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. So explore and enjoy -- it's free.

Ocean Beach

One-mile long beach features a municipal pier for walking and fishing plus designated areas reserved for swimming and surfing.

Reviewed By ChrisK100 - Henderson, United States

We visit San Diego and just love the atmosphere of Ocean Beach where we always visit...we are so lucky to get a spot to park on Abbot Street almost right next to the Pier...we go down to the water's edge and watch the surfers and enjoy the crashing waves and salt air. It is crazy with people (of all types there) so be prepared for busy restaurants and stores! Walk along Newport Avenue and you'll find everything as far as food and merchandise and there sure are always a lot of people who enjoy lining up for a bite to eat at Hodad's! It's just a crazy awesome place and totally worth the visit.
