Centennial House

Reviewed By beachboywantabe - Corpus Christi, United States

This home built in 1849 is the oldest home in Corpus Christi and is full of many interesting items representative of the period. Tours don't have to be scheduled, but they are available ONLY on the first Sundays of each month, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The home is operated by the non-profit organization Corpus Christi Area Historical Society. Tours of this 2-story well-preserved house museum are given by two well informed ladies who know much about the history of the house and local history. The home is full of many interesting items, ranging from antique toys, beds, ceramics and an antique piano. We are locals, but have toured many homes across the country, including New Orleans, Seattle, Boston, and Rhode Island; this old home in Corpus Christi is definitely worthy of a visit if you enjoy old homes.

This interesting little place has a lot to offer! Approximately every month there are new displays of local artists in every medium complete with hors d'oeuvre openings! There are free classes on the weekends and the best pottery studio in Corpus on site. On Wed. nights there is a farmers market right in the open air courtyard. The gift shop and in house cafe are worth checking out also. A sweet drop of culture on the shoreline!

The Art Museum of South Texas

A striking, all white building on the water, this art museum was voted one of the best in southern Texas. Although permanent exhibits feature art from the region, the museum is known for its rotating exhibits of fine art work in different mediums.

As a Corpus Christi resident for almost 30 years, I have enjoyed this art museum many times. They have some good exhibits and as most art museums do, they rotate the art displayed. Today we saw two Dali "melting clock" lithographs which I've not seen here before. They also have an exhibit of the "Art of Animation" that will be up for a month or so. The Art Museum is at the end of Shoreline and overlooks the Ship Channel, the Texas State Aquarium, and the Lexington and also includes Hester's Restaurant, one of my favorite lunch spots in town. On a nice day it is great to sit outside and enjoy the wonderful view and watch the seagulls.

Museum was very interesting for all of my kids, ages (2-13). Their favorite part was the museum employee giving a presentation in the old general store. It was entertaining and they learned a lot. So glad to see an exhibit on slavery as well. It is often so overlooked in our local museums.

Address is the “back” door, either walk through the restaurant or walk around the block to access the right door. Super free museum, donation box’s inside. The history is amazing and they did a nice job of laying it out. A must do even if you have no interest in surfing.
