Top 10 Multi-day Tours in San Jose, Province of San Jose

June 23, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

Vibrant and packed with Victorian mansions, Costa Rica's rowdy, bustling capital was built on the profits of the coffee trade and working "golden bean" plantations still surround the city. Try freshly roasted local beans at Mercado Central. For shinier gold, visit the Museo del Oro. Many renovated landmarks now house stylish hotels. Usually viewed as a hub, rather than a destination, nightlife is concentrated in Spanish village-inspired El Pueblo. Don't miss the elegant 1897 National Theater.

We travelled in August 2019 with 2 boys aged 9 and 11. Had THE most amazing time! Thank you to Kristina and the team at Costa RIcan Trails. From the moment we landed everything went smoothly. Cannot fault the accommodation, exactly as planned and to meet our requirements. They helped juggle the tours to meet our needs, arranged private transfers so we had time out on our own for the long journeys. Made excellent recommondations and just all in all and fantastic experience. Our tour was: 2 nights Torguguero at Mawamba Lodge 2 nights Puerto Viejo at Azania Bungalows 1 night Boca Tapada at Maquenque Lodge - Treehouse (unbelievable) 2 nights Arenal at Arenal Springs (loved the hot springs at the hotel) 2 nights at Monteverde Lodge & Springs All the recommended tours were amazing. Hikes to see wildlife, white water rafting, horse riding, zip lines just a memorable holiday. We then flew to Florida Keys on the way home for some R&R which was needed after packing it in!!

Like others, we had originally scheduled a trip to Costa Rica in July, 2020 which had to be rescheduled. My husband and I went to Pacuare Lodge for two nights and did the rafting to and from the lodge. It is in a beautiful, remote location with upscale amenities and food. We did the canopy adventure with zip lining and repelling and loved the new infinity pool overlooking the river. Our bungalow was private and luxurious. After Pacuare, the Costa Rica Expeditions driver picked us up as scheduled and took us to Tabacon Hot Springs near Arenal Volcano. This was a much more touristy experience and the hot springs require a bus ride to visit. We had two day trips - one to the Sky Adventure Park and another to the Sloth Park. Both tours exceeded our expectations. Our final destination was to Lapa Rios on the Osa Peninsula. This required flights to and from the airport in San Jose to Puerto Jimenez in a small plane. Getting there may be a challenge, but it is worth the effort. We spent four nights enjoying the tropical environment, wildlife, food, and excellent guides who lead walks through the jungle. We woke to the noise of the howler monkeys, and watched spider monkeys, toucans and scarlet macaws while overlooking the ocean from our private deck. Costa Rica Expeditions fulfilled every promise they made. At the end of the trip, the team saved us from missing our flight home by contacting the clinic after hours to resend our Covid test results which we hadn’t received. This trip could have been a disaster without such a competent and caring team to make sure everything went smoothly. In this uncertain time of return to overseas travel, having a company in country made all the difference. We highly recommend them!

I was in Costa Rica in January, now I have traveled to Colombia. I have waited several months but I cannot shake how HORRIBLE this tour was. We were supposed to have a tour bus but was instead packed into a sedan. At some point the tour guide was alluding to us going to a nicer restaurant and having us pay for his lunch because the office "did not send the money over" for the included meal. I have been on many tours before and many after but this one was easily the worst. Our tour guide was out taking pictures of his own on every site instead of actually guiding us. What took the cake was when we thought we were going to see a coffee plantation but instead he pulls over on the side of the road to a ditch to show us mounds of dirt that supposedly were growing coffee and he said he couldn't take us to an actual plantation because "The Nicaraguans are harder working and the Costa Rican youth are always on their phones now so it won't be worth it". We paid 100+ dollars EACH for a glorified taxi ride across the country. 0/10 don't recommend
