Heavenly Place High in the Mountains!

Reviewed By corazonladron

We had our flight changed by one day departing and returning due to weather and tings were thrown into complete chaos, so I had to contact the hotel because the useless Expedia people could not get their act together. Fortunately for us, the lovely Stefannie answered the phone and she reassured us that all would be well and that the hotel would do everything in their power to take care of the situation. I am not a very trusting person when it comes to travel promises, but boy was I impressed with this young lady. Stefannie simply went to work with her manager and contacted us a couple of days later to reassure us that our reservation had been adjusted accordingly, get this, at no extra charge. Have you heard of that one before? I haven't. Then we get to the place and it is completely unexpected in the most awesome of ways. Beautiful scenery, lovely temperature, gorgeous gardens, and the facilities are to die for in a somewhat spartan way that makes you realize that when you are in setting like this, you don't need phones, computers, TVs, etc. Nothing but a good book. We get assigned the river cabin overlooking a thunderous waterfall that will lull you to sleep at night. The terrace if wonderful for birdwatching (over 20 new species added to my life list from the hotel grounds alone), Roger the bartender makes a Mojito that is to die for, but the biggest surprise of all is the food. The meals are $36.00 U.S. Dollars if memory serves me well, but when you make the reservations the hotel fails to tell you that it is not just a meal, it is a four course food experience, which along with the fabulous, and I mean fabulous (you can tell I liked this place) breakfast makes you wonder, how come you have just discovered this place. During one of the days we had a birding tour planned that would require us to leave before breakfast, so Stefannie and the crew surprised us after dinner with brown bag breakfast packages to carry with us (a delicious cheese sandwich, peanut/butter, fresh fruit, juice boxes, etc.) during our tour. Just thoughtful. We didn't even have to ask. Our experience was heavenly and the service is some of the best we ever had, only second to Viking Cruises' service, which is saying a lot. All the staff, but particularly Roger, Maria, Marcus, and most of all the gem that is Steffanie, along with the fantastic views of the river, the wonderful pool and hot tubs (2), and amazing wildlife make this place the reason why we are already looking at availability for next year. We were so turned off by our experience with the heat, the humidity, the hordes of tourists and hordes of aggressive hawkers in Manuel Antonio, that we swore on the way to Rio Chirripo that we would never go back to Costa Rica. But after our stay here, we are already looking at dates for our return to the mountains to Rio Chirripo. Sometimes you just get lucky and find that spot that makes you happy, this is definitely ours.

Cedrela Eco-Lodge

Beautiful views with great food in a cozy setting

Reviewed By MountainVA

Beautiful setting, an excellent in house restaurant with food prepared from locally sourced ingredients and a very attentive staff. The views from the cabin were spectacular. Plenty of flora and fauna and a trail in the facility. We did a guided birding tour (Oscar Flores, Recommended), and visited Coopedota coffee production facility. San Gerardo de Dota is about an hours drive. Santa Maria is about 15 minutes away and had the nearest gas station and supermarket. The drive to this location was actually less stressful from Hwy 2 than the drive to Savegre at San Gerardo, but the latter does have more facilities geared towards the tourist. Having said that, the cozier and intimate setting of Cedrela Eco lodge was clearly our preference.

Splendid Eco friendly lodge?

Can highly recommend this Lodge? Superb surroundings- nestled in a private reserve, where you will experience amazing Cabinas, really good home cooked food (also for vegetarians), stunning nature, exquisite for bird watching. There are self guided trails into the rainforest and around the property, where they also grow cocoa and make their own - really tasteful - chocolate?..the owners have worked years to replant the area with endemic trees and plants, and now the place is filled with life again. It’s a super wonderful place - absolute tranquil, a little piece of Paradise on earth, where people are extremely devoted to protect the nature and the wildlife? Here you also find Yoga decks. Super friendly staff and a place you hesitate to leave again, as everything is perfect?

Good location, nice restaurant area

Reviewed By ProkyProky

The place itself is a nice location, very private and surrounded by tall trees and a view of the nearby mountains. The restaurant area was a nice place to hang out with great views and the food was pretty good too. The only downside was the room itself. They could do with a bit of an update, felt a bit like going back to the 70’s. And it was quite dark where they were too, located further down the hill and in the shade of the trees. People say it’s very good for birders but I didn’t see too many myself. We were just passing through really from the Pacific coast to the Caribbean coast but some people stop here for the hiking. The good news is if you like tennis there’s a full indoor court here and the owner is an avid player himself. I would recommend this place but it would be even better if some money was spent on the rooms and pool area which wasn’t very inviting. But the view, the food and restaurant area was pretty nice. And the insects noise at sunset was totally amazing, I’ve never heard insects make so much noise.

Great place to experience the beauty of Costa Rica

Reviewed By Saltspringsgirl

The hotel & restaurant are located just off the Pan American highway but what a beautiful tranquil spot. We bought a package which included our meals, room & 2 tours. Everything was first class. The hotel room is rustic but charming with an incredible view of San isidro. The food was basic but delicious. I cannot say enough about the zipline & the ATV tour. The guides were professional & friendly & safety oriented. I am a senior & appreciated their assisting me without making me feel like I was a chicken. This is a Tico family owned business who will go out of their way to ensure that you have a special stay.

My stay at CheTica was wonderful. I needed a long rest so I booked a month while I wrote my book. It was relaxing and restful and provided the time I needed away from distractions and other people. The service was wonderful including daily housekeeping, room service of all meals (if desired), and lovely walks up and down the hills to freshen my thoughts. The animals are wonderful to watch in the morning. I had such a great time I went back three times.

Third time 'cause I love it

Reviewed By NewYorker73CostaRica

The owner, Luis, makes this place. Literally! He built the hotel, on top of boulders, with all its well-designed idiosyncracies. He is the hotel keeper AND the chef, and a good one at that. Every room is distinctly different, even down to bathroom fixtures. The free breakfast alone is worth the stay. I am looking forward to my next trip here.
