I booked the 3 days 2 nights tour and I enjoyed every minute of the tour. Discovering the Amazon River, the Amazon forest and see all those animals (monkeys, snakes, spiders, birds, sloths, lizards...) was amazing. Our guide Adriel was the best : he was always paying attention to what we wanted to see or to do. And he has a crazy big knowledge about the forest. I recommend to write them directly so you can discuss your program and they can give you special fares.

Great jungle experience

Reviewed By Rocio R

I spent two nights in the jungle. Gerson took care of everything. As a solo traveller I felt taken care of. Picked up at the airport and dropped off at my hotel at the end of my jungle stay. Gerson and Bala know the jungle very well and it was amazing to see how they spotted animals so easy. We saw pink and grey dolphins, beautiful sunsets, guacamayas, monkeys, many different birds and caught some pirañas. I had a great time and I’m glad I chose to make the Peruvian Amazonia part of my travel itinerary to Peru. I highly recommend Curuhuinse Lodge for an authentic jungle experience. Who better than a local to show you how life in the jungle really is.

Money comes before wildlife

Reviewed By katiepage

(First a word of warning - don’t book Heliconia assuming you won’t have to pay out during tours) We picked heliconia over the other resorts due to its location quite far up the river and away from having the usual tours of just going to the wildlife reserves. We hadn’t realised what a mistake this was at the time. Our truly ‘wild Amazon’ experience was not to be. Unfortunately masses of wildlife are plucked from the Amazon basin every day by locals who eat, export and sell at wet markets. Even further up than we were at heliconia (1.5 hrs up from Iquitos) there was little wildlife to be seen. Instead you’ll see more variety visiting Belen market, sliced cayman, caged birds, cut up sloths, turtles, marine life.. anything and everything the local people can get a buck for. It’s unfair to state that the above is fault of the hotel.. it is not, and the hotel generally is very lovely, clean, organised and good food. ( although both myself and partner contracted bacterial gastroenteritis while there) What I do criticise the hotel for is the tours it offers which seem to exploit the small number of remaining wildlife. I have broken down below my comments on the tour programme 2nights and 3days: Day 1 We visited monkey island where various species of monkeys now reside after being rescued from captivity. This was probably the best part of the programme and was a big relief to see some people working preserve wildlife. After arriving at the lodge and having lunch, we were then told we were going fishing. This on the itinerary we were given said day 2 but we understood tours were interchangeable. Fishing was great fun but bizarrely our tour advised the biggest fish will be kept and cooked later which the fisher will be able to try - alongside winning a bottle of coke. I caught the biggest fish which the guide kept after putting all the others back in the water to live.. but there was no mention of it ever again? I couldn’t understand why they’ve given an expectation and not deliver ? During this tour there was also the opportunity to see pink river dolphins. Which was the main reason my partner wanted to visit the north Iquitos instead of Puerto Maldonado. Unfortunately we were not told of this before leaving the lodge and left all equipment behind as we thought we were just going ‘fishing’. I can’t explain the upset on my partners behalf. Perhaps Heliconia could communicate more effectively. The second day it mainly rained we had an early morning bird watch whereby we saw little and headed back due to the heavy rain. The nature trek through the jungle was very fun (afternoon) and evening we set out to look for wildlife after the sun went down. We only saw a sloth no cayman - presumably all dragged from their habit for the meat. The last day which we kept all hopes riding on turned out to be the absolute worst. We went to an extremely small village to view the giant Lilly pads specifically grown there presumably for tourists. On return we were met by a group of 6ish locals holding a sloth and a Mata mata turtle. The sloth was given to me and I held it. After realising what I was doing and knowing the creature must have been in great discomfort I handed it back as promptly as possible. I felt sick from the realisation that they keep the sloth purely to make money from tourists and I had been a part of it- they asked for money after I handed it back- of course. (Which I didn’t have and needed another couple to bale me out) ushered into a shop where you are expected to buy something, riddled with guilt, I peeped back outside to see the locals dragging the sloth by its front claws along a trail and throwing the turtle on its back laughing. I felt utterly disgusted that I had been involved in contributing to this animal’s treatment. I’ve spent a long time feeling extremely upset with myself. The sloth didn’t even have the chance to run being such a slow moving animal. Afterwards we took a boat to a strange kind of wine/alcohol distillery, we looked into the fermented buckets then sat down at a table to try some of the alcohol. we did not bring local money (didn’t think we needed it on a-all-tours-included-trip) but only had $5 and $20 US dollars. We didn’t like the alcohol and didn’t want to buy it. The guide said if you don’t buy something you must tip, being that we only had $5 we asked how much the smallest bottle of alcohol was, after much confusion regarding price and a long inspection from the distillery owner of the $5 we gave, we reluctantly purchased some strang small bottle of alcohol. The owner huffed at us as though we were a nuisance. Before this day of exploration began the guide told us ‘bring some cash in case you would like to buy something’ what should have been said is ‘you are required to buy things you don’t want’ ‘to enable us to keep the tours we have and please the locals’. All in all I was extremely disappointed that Heliconia still bring their guests to areas where wildlife isn’t protected it’s used for personal gain, Heliconia should know better and if they hope to compete with other lodges which hold a better understanding of conservation, they need to rethink what they currently offer and start to put their influence to good use.

An Immersive Amazon Jungle Experience

Reviewed By Adrienne L

I highly recommend this tour for solo travelers, couples and friends. Anytime you want to do a tour and whatever it maybe, the guides here are very kind and patient. My guide Junior was a good guide. He speaks English and he is very patient and kind. I unfortunately got sick on my tour and when I got sick, Junior was more than just a guide, he went out of his way to get me medical attention in whatever way possible. He’s there to listen to you, guide you through the Amazon and help you mentally, emotionally and physically. On this tour, you’ll get to experience unique things like holding monkeys, sloths, anaconda snakes, and parrots. You’ll get to experience trying a tree bark tea and eating local food. The food the lodge gives you is fresh and they’ll feed you beyond what you can handle. I do want to advise people that, maybe this isn’t the best tour for you if you are on a CPAP machine as the power is limited and there isn’t any wifi or phone service. So before your stay, make sure you contact your loved ones and let them know what you’ll be doing because you won’t have contact with them. You will be completely two hours from Iquitos in the jungle and you will have to take this time to be unplugged. The rooms, there are nets around the beds and it’s basically like a room tent because at night, you’ll get to hear the sounds of the jungle and nope you won’t get any air conditioning!! This is a full Emerson of the rainforest. Anything you need on this tour, Junior or any guide will be there for you and Christian the owner is very kind and helpful and he made sure I went to the currency exchange. It’s important you go to the currency exchange and get small denominations before staying here so you can get some special suvinours and it’s important to remember DONT FORGET YOUR DEET, RAIN JACKET AND A FLASHLIGHT!!!

Amazon Experience

My brother and I did the 3-day, 2-night experience with Maniti. Our guide, Edwin, was amazing! He was extremely knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and made all of us in the tour feel included and welcomed. Edwin asked each of us what we wanted to do during our stay, and he did his best to make sure it all happened. He truly was our “father in the jungle”! The rooms are pretty basic, but they were clean and had bug netting. There is running water in the bathroom, but the water isn’t hot (which actually turned out to be great) and it shouldn’t be used to brush your teeth. Maniti does provide drinkable water for all their guests. I would recommend this experience for any traveler looking for a budget friendly option. When you go, request Edwin be your guide. He made the experience truly unforgettable!

Wow, there is nothing better than having an amazing tour while at the same time supporting 100% local businesses. We did the 4D/3N tour which was perfect and cost only 1300 soles each. Remi, our guide might just be the best guide I’ve ever had in terms of his passion and eye sight. This man saw animals from miles away and just blew me away. The whole team at jungle wolf is fantastic, food is great, and you really get to do whatever you want. We went anaconda searching multiple days, night and early morning canoes, fishing, beach day, one night we were even out till midnight as time flies when you’re having fun and searching for animals. Never felt there was a rush to get back or was pushed in any direction. Only negative was the room wasn’t mosquito proof and the netting had some holes; however, you have a net covering the bed. Make sure you bring 40% or higher deet and expect to wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid mosquitos and the sun which was wickedly strong. Also, just a note jungle wolf is one of the only lodges that’s owned locally. There are numerous other more expensive ones that are owned by foreigners which we prefer to avoid. Thank u!!!

Amazonas Rain Forest Adventure

I was staying with a Friend at the Amazon King Lodge in the Rainforest for 3 Days and 2 Nights. It was a nice experience, especially if you have never been to the jungle before. We went during the rain season, so we did most of the things via boat. Our Guide, Wilson, was a funny guy and as he grew up in the rainforest, he had a lot of knowledge about the plants and the animals. We were a small group (2 guys, the guide and a trainee guide) and because of that we could do a lot of nice things and have a real good experience, better than in big groups. The lodge itself was nothing special and a bit old and rural but that's a nice thing I guess, because you don't want a 5 star luxury hotel in the jungle. The staff was very nice and polite and the food tastes good. Overall a good experience!

My ship did not depart till late afternoon next day and I asked for being at the hall of the hostel for a couple of hours while waiting. The owner of the hostel agreed but after my check out she asked me to leave in a very rude way! I was shocked, never before I had been treated like this, especially having been one of her guests some hours ago. Never again! I really advise against dealing with such a person and/or business.
