John C. Campbell Folk School

Located in the mountains of western North Carolina, the John C. Campbell Folk School offers weeklong and weekend courses in traditional craft, fine art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography, storytelling and writing. Founded in 1925, the school is based on the Danish folk school model, and strives to provide experiences in hands-on learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. Students live on campus and share family-style meals. Each day begins with early morning music and storytelling. Nature walks, tours of local artisans' studios, evening music, and dance programs are part of each week's schedule. A founding member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the school also operates a craft gallery that represents over 300 regional artists.

I live near the John C Campbell Folk School (lucky me!) and also teach here several times a year. There are week long classes year round and weekend classes once a month in all kinds of crafts etc. - metal/jewelry, clay, weaving, basketry, blacksmithing, woodworking, book arts, cooking, music, dancing, painting and so much more! I think a week at the Folk School is like a summer camp for adults. It is non-competitive and is a wonderful place to learn something that you've always thought of doing but never had the time, hone up on skills, try something new! Take a look at their website to get an idea of the classes available. I take classes as well as teach (I teach Stained Glass, and Kaleidoscope classes) so I speak as both a student and an instructor. Come! It is also a beautiful part of the country.

North Carolina Glass Center

My wife and I had the opportunity to make a glass in the "Hot Shop" today. Last time we were in Asheville, we found this spot too late to participate, so we were sure to make arrangements this time. It was a "blast"!!! The staff were welcoming and warm . Our instructor, Stephanie, was fantastic. She explained everything, made us feel at ease and comfortable and was very knowledgeable. Being able to make our own blown glass tumbler was great addition to our trip to Asheville. I highly recommend this experience.

Salty Dog Yoga & Surf

Situated by the sea in Carolina Beach, NC, Salty Dog is a welcoming yoga studio with a laid back island vibe. We are passionate about yoga, wellness, play and the great outdoors. From the unique workshops that we offer to the regular classes on our schedule, we seek ways to connect and inspire our community. We don’t confine our practice to the four walls of a studio, we enjoy taking our practice out to the beach, the park and other local surroundings. At Salty Dog, our yoga practice doesn’t end when we step off the mat, that is just the beginning. We believe service to be an integral part of the yogic path and participate in philanthropic opportunities throughout the year that are near and dear to our hearts, supporting our local community and beyond. We invite you to come join us, kick off your shoes, take some deep breaths, leave with some new found friends and a full cup.

I love Salty Dog Yoga & Surf! They have a great selection of classes, at all times of the day and evening, the owner Mandy is amazing and they have incredible, experienced yoga instructors. I've had a monthly membership for several months now, and love the ease of going to classes anytime I want and as often as I want. Some of my favorite classes are the full moon and new moon yin classes with sound bowls when I'm feeling like taking a low-key class, and power vinyasa when I'm feeling more energetic. I also love how tight-knit the Salty Dog community is. Everyone is friendly, loving, and it feels like family. I highly recommend this yoga studio!

Accidental Artist

Reviewed By hopalongrving - Mississippi, United States

We only get to visit our nephew a few times a year so when we saw this place we pounced on the idea of getting to have fun with him and make a tangible memory together. He is only 3; therefore we had no idea how long he would last in the painting task. The staff was wonderful in explaining if we only got part of the project done they would hold the item for him to return another time or bake it as is. He ended up painting for TWO hours!! The staff encouraged him along the way and really got him excited about waiting for his finished product. We cant say it enough, the staff is truly what made this experience enjoyable. Tip: There is a discount for military (past and present) on Mondays. Explaining the whole process ahead of time was key in taking a little one. We showed him the unpainted ceramics, the painted ones and the ones that had already been baked. Showing him the steps helped in setting his expectation that he would have to wait a week to get his finished product.
