Sapunaya

Great room and friendly welcome

Reviewed By jaminneb

The room was unexpectedly large – more of a suite – with a raised bedroom area, sitting room area, large bathroom (with bath and shower), and private courtyard garden with its own bathtub! The breakfasts were very good, with lots of fresh fruit. Our hosts were friendly and helpful, and although they said they spoke very little English, they spoke more than enough for us to get by. A Japanese friend of ours booked this accommodation for us, and we were very glad that this had been possible. You can email them directly if you go to their website We spent two nights here, which was enough to explore the tiny island and experience it after the tourists leave. There are some nice beaches for snorkelling and swimming, and hiring bikes was worthwhile. There are a couple of shops and a few restaurants, although we could only find a couple open in the evenings.

Irumoteso

Fuper friendly and helpful, and truly relaxing (hammock)

Reviewed By Ollie U

Stayed here a few nights back in April 2019 the host Kiyoko was incredibly helpful, and even sent me a postcard afterwards. I had a wonderful trip into the forest with them to see the glow worms. It might seem up a hill and further from the coast but this gives you a gorgeous view of the boats coming and going as you relax back in the hammocks in the wonderful peaceful garden. My favourite hostel in 6 weeks of travelling all over Japan, and that's from Hokkaido to Okinawa, to Tokyo and Kyoto etc. A wonderful place to relax and when I was there they sorted any transfers I needed. I was also able to hire a small car which they helped with which was great. My room was a private Japanese style room.

Pension Hoshinosuna

Fantastic view and location

Reviewed By Teresa V

Hoshinosuna is a beach with the sand corn shaped like star. This strange phenomenon is visible in some of the Yaeyama beaches, but Hoshi-no-suna has even the name on it (it means "sand of stars" i Japanese). The pension is just on the beach, which is also quite nice for snorkelling if you get it in the high tide (the difference in spring is nearly 2 meters, look a the tide tables on the web!). So, fantastic view, fantastic sunsets, fantastic souvenir shop placed in the restaurant building. Wifi only there, unfortunately. No service of cleaning if you are there for 3 nights (but you can get new towels). Very nice people there! Think that my friend forgot the cell phone charger in the room and she got it back the same day in another hotel in another island (we were already back in Ishigaki). So, quite amazing!

Guesthouse cago

The space where cago is extraordinary. The simple inn where I have no televisions and clocks. cago is relaxing politely with pet dog Hermes with a married couple. We don't give services like a hotel. Luxurious time when everything isn't here has passed slowly. Please, please enjoy time when you're Rojas so that we may live in cago.

The best place to stay in Taketomi

Reviewed By My_eyes_to_japan

Amazing place with 3 double rooms, a veranda for breakfast with original food from Okinawa, with excellent hosts. It is worth to spend two nights here, rent a bicycle and visit the sand beaches around this precious island. We visited it my wife and I on May 2019.

Villa Unarizaki

Comfortable Hotel

Reviewed By YacchanAmarone

I stayed here with my wife just for one night. There were a few restaurants and bars within 10-minute walk and I actually visited the bar named Next to Pineapple House, where we enjoyed at night. I could see the Tsukigahama beach from the room. That would be good if it was fine weather, although I am sorry that it had been rainy day during our stay in Iriomote. The room was medium sized but clean. The dinners were inclusive in our package, but we were taken to the other hotel named Il Mare, 30-second drive from our hotel, to have dinners, where the tastes of meals were fair. The receptionists were friendly although most of them came from outside of this island. In total, this hotel is recommendable.

Ilmare Unarizaki

Hotel for divers

Reviewed By JugemJugem

Ilmare Unarizaki is a hotel with a diving resort (Diving Team Uorsezaki Iriomote). The room is Western style room with a bus-room, TV , cooler (not air conditioner) and small refrigerator. It is not a combined toilet. The room is a minimum size. Most of guests are divers. I could not see the ocean well from my ground floor room. Okinawa cuisine at the restaurant is delicious and reasonable. However, the last call time was 20:30, and I felt it was too early.

Pension Iriomote

Great location

Reviewed By Caroline B

Great location The pension is a 4 minute walk from one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. And what’s more it was almost entirely empty for most of the time we were there. The rooms in the pension are basic but quite comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent. We didn’t have an evening meal there but Ito san, the owner, recommended several local places and made reservations. He even drove us to one restaurant which was a longer walk as he didn’t want us to walk on the road in case we met a Habu snake! This restaurant, Hatsue was particularly excellent. There is a nice little garden and a lounge area. It would have been nice if there could have been tea/coffee making facilities and some drinks.

Villa Hirugi

Excellent quiet place to recharge your batteries on a long trip

Reviewed By Whisi

We only spent 2 nights at Villa Hirugi, but we wished it was more. The weather was mostly bad so we could not swim or enjoy the beach very much, but thanks to Villa Hirugi we could nevertheless enjoy our stay very much. The owner and her kids are very lovely and the facility is well maintained and clean. There were no other guests around so we got a free upgrade to a room equipped with an own bathroom. The Izakaya 5 minutes down the street (Pocket House) provides good basic food and drinks and a small shop in a guesthouse next door (Mariudo) offers cigarettes, beer and other small snacks to buy. We booked a Kayak and Jungle hiking tour with the afilliated Kaguya tour guide which was a very pleasent experience too. The bicycles (one day for free) are well maintained and perfect for a trip to Hoshizuna Beach (20-30min). Due to weather conditions the ferry to Uehara was canceled so we ended up in Ôhara. A free shuttle bus to Uehara (approx. 1 hour) let's you off wherever you tell the driver to do so. For Villa Hirugi, what would be the Izakaya. From there it is a 5 minute walk. On the return trip, we were directly brought Ôhara by Kaguya staff. We mostly communicated in Japanese, so no experience with language problems. There ware almost no negative things to say. The floor in our room was stained from what may be rain. It looked like somebody forgot to close the window once. This was not a real problem, though. Note there is not much around except the Izakaya. But this is true for almost all of Iriomote island and the very reason you go there anyway.
