Merikenya Takamatsu Ekimae

Reviewed By Lara N

Merikenya is a typical Sanuki udon restaurant. It is self-serve, so you order the noodles and pick out tempura to go with it. The food is good, but not exceptional, but it is extremely convenient being directly across from Takamatsu Station. Therefore, it is a good choice for lunch when running errands or waiting for the train.

It's very good "Sanuki udon" restaurant. "Sanuki" means the old name of this region. The most popular dish is "Hiya-ten (Cold udon with tempra). The price is 972yen and it's quite reasonable price. It was very nice for us and we believe it suits your taste even if you haven't experienced Japanese udon. I recommend another kind of udon, Kama-ten(straight-from-the-pot udon with tempura). The price is same. You must be prepare for the line to eat because it is a very popular restaurant and you can't book the seat. Enjoy !

We drove into Marugame Prefecture and TripAdvisor pointed us to this No.1 ranking restaurant. The Oyadori (see attached English menu photo) should not be tried by anyone wearing denture, it's just too tough. The Himadori, on the other hand, is really tender and less oily and less salty. However after I have eaten, knowing what I now know, I would not have entered in the first place. If you find this posting helpful, please click HELPFUL. Cheers!

the place was pretty packed on a Thursday night...I thought 700 for a small bowl of curry-udon was bit much (most places have it for 100-200 yen less)...I don't know about the noodles being anything special but the curry broth was fantastic...not too thick or too runny...pretty rare for curry broth to be good enough to sip as soup after the noodles have been slurped up...the curry-udon definitely lived up to the hype...stop by if you're in Takamatsu!

Fantastic place for lunch before visiting Ritsurin Koen. You choose small or large size udon, the cook for five seconds in the hot water bath then add chopped spring onions, pepper and tempura flakes. As you choose your size of udon you choose your topping, everything looks really good but I had gobo and sweet potato tempura which were both delicious. The place is full of local workers so you just sit a long bench tables. Make sure you return your tray when you finish. They make their own udon each day and when it is sold out the restaurant is closed. Unfortunately they are not open at night. Takamatsu is a centre for udon and this place is one of the best.

What a great place and thanks to TripAdvisor for the recommendation. This is truly a family/small business operation with amazingly friendly and warm staff who really care. Walk in and get a warm greeting. You're issued with a plate of tempura and then go over to the counter where a lady asks you how much udon you want. You get your fresh udon made there, head over to scoop your own broth and put the condiments of your choice. You sit down and get a hot green tea or water and enjoy the communal and friendly atmosphere. It's a fast and cheap eat and you feel part of an experience and a community rather than 'just' a restaurant. Would definitely recommend.

Yamagoeudon

Reviewed By jeni_hk

Yamagoeudon is an extremely popular udon place with a long history, located in a small quiet town, next to some farm land and fields. It has raving reviews and have been listed in various travel guides and blogs as the must-go place for Sanuki Udon. I think there is no other way to get there other than driving as it is quite out there, but regardless of its location, there was a queue to the shop, of which mostly are locals (always a good sign). There is a menu board outside the shop with pictures, and samples of the different portion sizes (no English). Note to take a picture of the menu and decide what you want to eat first. You will realize the queue moves quite fast, and by the time you are in the shop, someone will ask you what you to order, and there is no menu for you to point at. No one speaks English, so we pointed at our phones to order the food. Another way is to study their website beforehand. The sequence is as follows: Decide what you want to eat -> enter shop and grab a tray -> call out your order -> receive your udon -> move forward to the cashier where you can pick up tempura items -> pay -> free seating (indoor and outdoor). The udon is amazing - texture is the perfect chewiness! The meal is also really good value for money, a single portion ranges from 200yen to 300yen. The sitting area is very relaxed. We saw locals pouring in some sauce into their udon and we tried some too – tasted good, I believe it is some sort of soy sauce. It is indeed very worthwhile to try this place! Do note they are closed on Sundays. Two parking lots available - if you go on busier days, there is someone directing parking.

This is a bustling local restaurant with great food and a lively, friendly host who speaks English. There are a number of fish choices but the snappier and Spanish mackerel were especially delicious. You can also select various vegetable side dishes from the display, and they also have miso soup with various garnish options. It is very busy, we went there twice and the second time was a Friday and we had to wait about 10 minutes, however the service is very fast. It is a bit hard to find, it is one street off the shopping arcade, but we asked and found it without too much trouble.
