We enjoyed a great meal before graduation. We were able to get the early bird specials! The meals were delicious and our waitress was accommodating. The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing and could provide for 10 people.

Marino's Restaurant

Reviewed By Mirto56

I recently enjoy dinner with family members at Marino's in Torrington. Before I start commenting, I would like to point out that I have been living in Italy most of my life, which makes me somewhat of an expert on Italian cuisine. I am always hesitant to eat "Italian" when visiting the USA as things often just don't compare with authentic Italian. I'm pleased to report that Marino's did splendidly with both the quality of food we consumed and service rendered. The locale was nicely decorated with a warm atmosphere. The dining room was spacious and a gas fireplace added to the charm. Christmas trees and decorations were still up and illuminated at the end of February, which I didn't understand, but every day is good for Christmas. Tables were topped with cloth tablecloths and service ware (dishes, utensils and glassware) were of average quality. I learned that the Marino family have owned and operated this restaurant for the past 57 years, making it an icon on the Torrington dining scene. Older family wedding photos were tastefully displayed on one of the walls. We started with a round of Martini cocktails which were both generous in size and perfectly prepared. Our server/owner, Cheryl, described some of the specials for this evening and she provided pleasant and attentive service throughout our meal. After placing our orders, Cheryl arrived with large basket of Italian garlic bread, olives, scallions, cheese and Italian spicy peppers to snack on while our meal was being prepared. House salads came with our entrees and the greens were fresh and topped with a tangy Italian dressing.I asked what type of white wines Marino's had on their wine list and I was pleasantly surprised to find a Sardinian Vermentino - "La Cala." It's rare to find Sardinian wines in the USA and La Cala was a perfect paring for my meal.I started with an order of raw oysters that were served on a bed of crushed ice and accompanied with the usual horseradish, seafood cocktail sauce and lemon wedges. The oysters we perfectly shucked and quite large in size; just the way I like them. I followed this with the Zuppa Di Pesce - Italian fish stew. I was offered the option of having this prepared in a red marinara sauce or a white wine and garlic sauce. I opted for the latter and was served a generous combination of mussels, clams, shrimp and haddock. All was fresh and tasty. Another family member enjoyed one of the daily specials; roasted rack of lamb served with green beans and potatoes. I also tasted the shrimp and garlic ravioli that were flavorful and prepared as one would find in Italy.I ordered a glass of grappa to conclude my meal as I had no room for dessert. The owner suggested that I try something American and I ended up enjoying a glass of maple-flavored Knob Creek Bourbon. There weren't many other customers, aside from a group of businessmen, on this Wednesday evening. I found this dining experience to be most pleasant. I recommend Marino's to the TripAdvisor community and I hope to return to Marino's to try some of the other items on their menu.

For years this place was crowded especially for dining on the deck. The pizza was good and the lines long. The last few visits were disappointing including waiting 40 minutes in an empty restaurant for the wrong pizza pie. No one we know goes there anymore and that probably includes the restaurants owners judging by the service,

I love Roma because it has the best crust. I also enjoy their Greek Salad. The feta is delicious. You can dine outdoors overlooking the river and baseball field or indoors. They are renovating their outdoor entrance and their garden. Looking good.

My husband and I went for dinner on a Thursday night. Not busy at all. I ordered a pasta combo plate which was terrible. It had lasagna which had black noodles??? I don't know if it was reheated many times or just burnt but it was horrible. The waitresses are nice but young and inexperienced. For the price it's just not worth it. Used to frequent here but this was a retry from not going for a long time. It has gone down hill. Would not return.

This was our first time eating here. They had both outdoor and indoor seating. The inside dining had an industrial vibe- very comfortable seating too. They offered a nice menu- salads, appetizers, pizzas, panini sandwiches and drinks. We ordered three dishes to share- Caesar salad, a grilled chicken panini with tomato, spinach and mozzerella and a small cheese pizza with mushrooms. We started with the Caesar salad - a generous serving and very fresh. The panini was a generous serving and very tasty on the grilled bread. The pizza was very good too- good size and the crust and cheese were delicious. In addition we had very good service.

We have Italian friends who really like this restaurant so we finally decided to have lunch there desire to pleaseere. They had a pretty good variety of choices, and I finally decided on the meatball grinder. It a generous size and after starting with a cup of escarole sausage soup I elected to take half home. The bread was to my taste, a white roll that was soft but crisp on the outside and large meatballs with a generous amount of cheese. I probably would have liked a bit more sauce, and I'm sure they would have been happy to accommodate me if I had asked. I thought the sandwich was fine, but nothing I would go out of my way for. However I will give the staff 5 stars attentiveness and a sincere desire to please. Our waitress was happy to relocate us after I found the table I had chosen was right in the path of cold air every time someone came or left, and the chef (?) made a point of checking with all the guests to make sure they were happy with their meal. I will certainly be willing to try another meal here, and the ample parking is a plus.
