Powerless in Pondicherry

Reviewed By annesI7154JZ

The garden was lovely and the room spacious. Unfortunately the power went out at night and the generator had run out of fuel. No fan, no a/c. It would have been bearable in winter but in May it was terrible. The hotel was not very apologetic. They were more concerned with our registration docs, which they messed up.

Refreshing Private Family experience

Reviewed By muralivasu

Disclaimer : This is run by a friend. It is not easy to find a easy relaxed space in Tamilnadu. Outside the city of Pondicherry on the Tamilnadu side of the border, in the edge of the Auroville forest, Inn Pondiville is a great family getaway. We found the swimming pool to be a highlight. Almost private, clean and well maintained one can spend hours in the pool. We did all meals in an outside canopy. Breakfast is the typical Tamil spread freshly cooked everyday. One of the secrets in this place is to ask the staff to cook off menu for yourself. Ensure they make the local food, local fish, chicken. A highlight in Kara Kozhambu, spicy with lots of garlic, it is a delight with rice. A nice and clean beach is 5 mins drive, there is plent of cheap booze which one can drink in private. Wifi is spotty - but didnt bother us at all. Ask Pravina for good recommendations around the area. If you have your own bicycle, then Auroville can be delight. Excellent value for money, we are bound to go back for long weekend. Enjoy this place

What was once a resort!

Reviewed By ssingha1988

I was surprised to see the dilapidated condition of the giant resort and was dying to know what might have happened with it. You won't find any historical event on Google. So I went through a lot of older reviews of the visitors and I could kind of guess it. If you go back to Tripadvisor reviews from 2017-18, you could guess that a previous owner probably sold the resort to OYO (must have gotten a life saviour deal!!!). The boutique shops in the resort had cleared their stock. And it happened usually what happens to a resort after a change boutique shops in the resort had cleared their stock. And it happened usually what happens to a resort after a change in ownership - DOWNGRADATION. The condition of the resort collapsed in a matter of months after this. It is now "taken care" of by a family of 3 - 4 and probably another guy?!?. The caretaker and his family stay right next to the reception counter inside a semi basement. You will have to cross deserted boutique shops and unkempt statues to reach the stairway area. What used to be a exquisite swimming pool is now a mosquito breeding place. The luxury open restaurant next to it looked so sad with broken stairs to its way. But the biggest surprise will be your rooms. They used to have card reading locks which have been disabled and replaced with the cheapest door locks and the small suitcase locks. It's so ridiculous it's funny. But hold on! The doors don't lock fully from the inside because THE CARD READING LOCKS HAVE BEEN DISABLED and the knob will rotate about 30 degrees. Come on, I won't tell you everything. You have to stay there to believe it. Oh by the way, the network is poor to non-existent. There's no wifi as well. There's no light on the way to the hotel or at the parking area. Kind of like the days from my grandfather's generations ignoring the modern day needs - security, communication and quality of service. And definitely not recommended for married couples and families. And like once my college professor told me, "If I score your answers above 1/5, then the toppers will get more than 5"

Basic budget guesthouse inside Auroville

Reviewed By JoyjeetM

It's a very basic budget guest house in the middle of jungle and very difficult to reach or commute without own vehicle. We almost got lost at night while returning. We stayed in Saffron room, it was big, neat and clean with AC bathroom hot water King bed cupboard sofa a small garden with table chair, a small kitchen which is shared with another two rooms. They provided towels but no soap shampoo etc were provided. Behatar is very basic bread butter Omelette banana but after eating you'll have to wash your own plates cups etc. Even if you cook anything or used any utensils you'll have to wash them yourself. The place is peaceful and quiet. I expected better facilities and service for the price paid.

Based on my bad experince I boughtfood from outside. Asked for cutleries. They rudely denied Cutlery. I took up this issue with Agoda. Till date Agoda never bothered even to give a courtesy call to say sorry. Bath towel given was torn. I will never recommend both Mango hill and Agoda to anyone

Great place

Reviewed By MrTravellerG

Second time we've stayed here. Very friendly staff, very tranquil and relaxing place. Great swimming pool. Breakfast is a bit basic, and usually only Indian breakfast of idly's etc. It's also in a great area just outside Auroville itself and about 15 minutes by tuk-tuk to Pondicherry. There's even a cash point now pretty much next door, when there never used to be, plenty of places to eat and Jeffi - the best place to eat in the whole area - is only a few doors down. Great value for money.

The green colored guesthouse is wonderful; centrally located, distance close to the main road and walking distance the visitor center and Matri Mandir in Auroville. The rooms are very clean in good condition. The staff is very friendly and the kitchen served special healthy yogi-like vegetarian food-almost gluten-free and vegan - yummy!

Sharnga Guest House

Sharnga Guest House is located in Sharnga community, one of the 150 settlements in Auroville. Sharnga community was started by Claude and Bernard on a barren land in 1976, first as a farm then as a stud farm having up to 40 horses. In 1992, when it was time to evolve and change once again, the horse sheds were transformed into rooms to welcome new comers into Auroville and guests as a co project of Bernard and Sigrid. Slowly Sharnga Guest House grew into a full-fledged Guest House it is today. The farm also grew into a residential community with each new resident their own work and activity. Sharnga is a “forest” guest house under big trees and in the middle of a lush, green, natural garden. Birds, butterflies, fish, horses, dogs, bugs, also share this environment with us humans. As most animals and insects are shy and seasonal one does not always see or meet them, but if you are quiet and lucky, you might be privileged enough to meet one or more of our co-habitants.

Must go just for serenity - poor customer service, facilities

Reviewed By ruparajgo

I spent 2 nights in Sharnga and this is my honest review. The place is far from the city and in a remote location. It is close to Auroville Main Road and Matrimandir but commute is not easy unless you have a car or comfortable riding a cycle. Knowing the route is a must! Maps misguide you. There is no way to book a cab or auto. The staff in the guest house also are not that helpful. The place looks green and serene - can be exciting for someone who wants a foresty ambience, can be overwhelming for someone who is not used to such an ambience. The guest house rooms are cosy, comfortable and have a good vibe. Breakfast served is decent. No lunch or dinner options. Only black tea and coffee and a kettle available in the common area. If you need more, you have to make arrangements. Swiggy delivery available but may charge extra. Cons There is only one person managing the administrative tasks. The two people managing are helpful and attend to your requests but overall maintenance is an issue. The bathrooms are not that well maintained. There are transparent windows in the rooms and there is always the fear of someone peeking in. Hot water takes some time to come. My room lock wasnt working properly and I had to shuttle between rooms till that was fixed Repeated follow ups had to be done and even when they said it got fixed, it wasnt - there is no attention to detail Random people switch off mains and geyser and you are left wondering if it is a power cut or something wrong The place gets really dark after 6 pm and it is so desolate that you will feel as if you are the only one in the guest house (if you are a solo traveller) The owners are rude and indifferent to some and super friendly to others There is no guidance, assistance Overall the people arent that welcoming, the place has a great vibe though You will be okay if you are super independent and can manage things on your own Also note this is not a resort or a party friendly place!
