Lovely building and area, but let down by extra breakfast charges

Reviewed By Lisa C

This was booked for me as a surprise by my husband. When we arrived the location was stunning, right by a old water mill. The room was not in the main building but in what might have been an old barn. It was small but clean, cosy and with a lovely view over the river. We were booked in for a meal and both ended up with burgers as the rest of the menu was really quite pricey and kinda limited. Which was a shame as a burger is hardly becoming of a romantic meal, but still - service was good and the restaurant had a good ambience. The reason this has 3 stars instead of 4? Breakfast. We were asked if we were part of the hotel. We said yes, but apparently unless you are in the main building, you are not 'part of the hotel' so we were seated in the bar area. Fine, it's near the water mill so better than being in the restaurant anyway. However we knew that breakfast was going to be around £10 each, but what we didn't know was that this did not include drinks. If you wanted a tea, coffee or orange juice with your breakfast, this was extra and meant that our breakfast was significantly more than we expected. It doesn't say this on the online menu I note - so guests do beware of the extra charges if you are staying for breakfast. In summary, this was a lovely stay, marred only by the prices. I feel they should either include a drink with the breakfast or be honest and make it clear when you book online that breakfast does not include drinks. Because it IS unusual to be charged extra.

Perfect place for a stop-over

Stayed here to break our journey to Cornwall. We had the Art Deco room, which I really liked but my husband found a little cramped for his larger frame! So perhaps we’d try a different room next time. A special mention for the gluten-free options at breakfast - not only was there fruit and yoghurt, which we were expecting would be all that would be suitable, but also gluten-free cereal, pastries and toast. Definitely a little gem!

Comfortable but needs a bit of a clean

Reviewed By 960laurareynolds

This was a comfortable hotel with stylish fittings. Unfortunately the downside was it's cleanliness. In our room, there were cobwebs around the ceiling and the carpet looked like it really needed a good vacuum. Staff were very friendly and happy to help. Breakfast for us as vegans was fine, but no veggie sausages available unfortunately, so we stuck with mushrooms and tomatoes on toast. My children really enjoyed walking around the large park opposite, the location was perfect for the short break we stayed.

Lunch - service and food very poor

Reviewed By 545caroc

Went for a pub lunch. The lady at the bar was pretty unpleasant, made us feel very unwelcome and she just had a very off-hand manner. The menu was limited and uninspiring so we shared a couple of plates - ploughmans and flatbreads with hummus. Not much of it and disappointing. All round pretty bad! Definitely wouldn't recommend. This was just bar food - can't comment on the hotel although the grounds looked lovely

Our experience was was pretty much the same as every bad review on this site. This is a business wallowing in negativity. Management are unwilling to accept that they have issues with the state of their hotel rooms. Bad business practice to not take onboard their customers feedback/reviews. All they seem to do is reply with sarcastic/childish comments. Good luck Stonehouse! Your’e going to need it!!

Excellent place to stay

All I can say is that it was perfection. We stayed in the cottage which had access to a garden which was perfect as we took our dog with us. The staff could not be anymore helpful and everyone was polite and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Our dog was given a sausage every morning when we went into breakfast. We had meals in the restaurant also. There was a little wait for our meal but when they are cooked fresh you don’t mind waiting a little longer. Did not have a bad meal for the 3 evenings we ate there. We would like to thank Sheila who was excellent during breakfast service and also telling us the best places to visit in the area. We have come home chilled and relaxed and look forward to visiting you in the future.

Arrived on Monday afternoon after a visit to WWT Slimbridge. Lovely location with a fantastic courtyard with seating and tables. Decided to have evening dinner there and I can honestly say that was of the nicest meals we had with delicious red wine. We had the stuffed chicken breast, stuffed with chorizo and mozzarella, with sautéed potatoes and leeks with a red wine sauce, superbly cooked. Room 6 our bedroom was unbelievably gorgeous, coupled with the luxury bathroom. The staff were also very efficient and friendly. Also the full English breakfast was so tasty and great produce. Highly recommended.
