Almost perfect!

Lovely hotel, great location, delicious breakfast, great rooms, super clean and tranquil. The beautiful pool area felt like a premium experience on a reasonable budget. Staff were really helpful when it came to arranging excursions and airport shuttles. My one complaint is that there are no reception staff at night and after 9pm you need a key code to get back in. This wouldn’t be an issue except that one night we got back after a power cut earlier in the evening and the keypad had stopped working even after the power came on. We were locked out of the hotel and it was doubly stressful as it was our last night and we were due to be picked up at 6:30am to be taken to the airport. So all our belongings, including passports, were trapped inside and we were trapped outside. We called the only contact number we had for any hotel staff and there was no answer - and it was only about 9:30, not the middle of the night. In the end I managed to climb into the hotel by scaling the 9 foot door in the perimeter wall and crawling through a small gap in the top of it, and letting my boyfriend in from the inside. However if this happened to a party that didn’t contain someone agile enough to climb the gate and small enough to fit through the gap above the door, it could have resulted in a night sleeping on the beach and a very expensive, long journey back to the UK if we’d missed our flight. I only bring this up so that the hotel are aware of it and can come up with a solution to the problem (maybe an emergency number that guests can call outside of reception hours) as it was an otherwise perfect stay!

One day in paradise

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The vibe, atmosphere and views are breathtaking. We stayed in one of the double rooms with ocean view that although we didn’t had much ocean view, seating in the balcony and listening to the waves crashed is something I’ll never forget. Also, you’ll find hammocks all over the place which makes your experience more enjoyable. Don’t miss the opportunity to try the drinks at the beach bar. I had watermelon and toronja margarita and so far it’s the best margarita I’ve had in my life. There’s all kind of restaurants outside of the property and also, three different parking lots ask the front desk which one is closer to your room. In general the food was OK but I’ll highly recommend the cocktails.

Romantic Hideaway in the Jungle

Reviewed By Kathleen H

Long overdue review. My boyfriend and I spent 10 nights at Canaima Chill House at the peak of the rainy season. WE LOVED IT! So relaxing and chill. Feels like a secret paradise. We arrived in the dark of night and were in total awe of our studio loft room and the whole place. Our jaws dropped when we got there and we couldn't stop smiling and talking about how gorgeous the place is. The interior design is so sexy and jungle/beachy. Perfect decor for a Costa Ric vaca. Done just right. Very romantic atmosphere. Clean and comfortable. Great natural light from the huge window behind our bed. Our room was on the 2nd floor. We slept in the gorgeous queen-sized bed in the main room. The studio we were in also had a loft with 2 single beds, more than we needed. We loved the location. It is up a steep road which can be challenging in the rainy season if you're not a good driver. We had no problem with it, but you definitely MUST have a 4x4. We actually chose Canaima because of its more secluded location up this hill. We loved being tucked into the jungle up there off the main road. We woke up every morning to the sounds of howler monkeys at first light. They were our signal to check the surf! When we visited Santa Teresa the time before, we stayed at a place just down the hill off the main road, and we never heard a single howler monkey, nor did we see any. At Canaima, we saw families of monkeys in the trees on the property daily. Lunch time was was the best time for monkey watching. There was so much incredible nature to see right from our porch. It was magical. The porch was like a whole extra room. We didn't want to hang out in town at night because the patio was so awesome and relaxing. Nice kitchen. We cooked breakfast daily, and most nights, we ordered food and cooked and dined at the table outside. The staff was all friendly and helpful. We felt very safe. The team all wore masks and practiced covid safety. The pool area is fabulous! The photos don't lie. The staff cleaned the pool and hot tub daily. We loved hanging out here. When we first arrived at night, we were happy to find a stocked honor system fridge with bottled water, beer, and wine by the front desk. This was very thoughtful and convenient. The owner really understands hospitality. The room was equipped with a safety light for brief blackouts, which can occasionally happen when you are in remote jungle beach areas during heavy rainstorms all over Costa Rica. Local restaurants deliver to Canaima if you don't feeling picking up food. Even in the pouring rain. If you're thinking about staying at Canaima, don't second guess it. Just book it! This place is paradise. Great for couples. Great for a small group too. We had 3 guys staying in the room next to us who seemed very comfortable as well. We can't wait to go back.

Pura Vida at its finest!

Reviewed By U212QHericj

My childhood best friend and I had the absolute joy of staying at this wonderful resort for 10 days of surfing and getting off the grid. The location is perfect for those looking to be slightly away from the busy center of town but also a short trip/walk (1 mile to everything in town). It is up the block from a great restaurant/hangout Rocamar and Cafe Social for breakfast/lunch with delicious ice coffee and staff. The room was perfectly rustic but super comfortable and loved the form bed for aching back of 50 something guys lol. The top item that I can rave about is the staff. All were so helpful and friendly throughout the whole stay. Especially need to point out that Maykol was a young man that was on top of every need and even tried to anticipate our needs (surf forecast, taxis, covid testing, etc). He became like our amigo that we looked foreard to seeing each day. The property manager, Jude, was also on top of a couple items for us and gave us great advice on the surf and local advise- just a joy to chat with each time we saw him. Finally even though we did not take surf lessons, Toro the resident pro, was so full of help and knowledge on the breaks, the area, the people. He embodied the pura vida mentality and we had many deep conversations on surf, life, history, etc. In the end both my friend and I were more than happy with Blue Surf Sanctuary and it more than lived up to exactly the escape we were looking for. Had to share my appreciation of the resort and the people for sure. Best Eric

Could be quite amazing

Reviewed By nicolau967

There is nothing really wrong with Manala Hotel. The location is excellent at the north end of Santa Teresa. The grounds are beautiful and well tended. The pool is pleasant to cool off in at the end of the day in the sun. We watched monkeys and their babies in the trees. And we had 2 lovely cats looking after our bungalow who greeted every morning and on our returns. The bungalows themselves are spacious with aircon, Netflix, fridge, huge shower and large comfortable bed. There is Free parking, it’s quiet (not sure why other reviewers have complained about noise) and good value. The are excellent bars and restaurants on the doorstep (we didn’t have breakfast at the hotel - we ate at Somos every morning 10/10!!). And the beach is just across the road where the sunsets are incredible. Manala hotel could be absolutely fabulous but somehow it lacks character. It’s got everything going for it but lacks personal touches. The reception feels like a portacabin. The staff aren’t particularly welcoming considering the effort it takes to get to Santa Teresa. The bungalows need nicer, more comfortable furniture. You can’t relax on your lovely porch because there is a hammock next to a structural pole and two hardback chairs. Our bungalow had a strange EasyJet meets African safari vibe. It needs nicer towels, free water and better bath products (no one likes a shampoo from a dispenser stuck on the wall). Also there are too many officious laminated signs telling you what you can’t do which again adds to the unwelcoming vibe. It’s a shame because it could be a fantastic destination without too many changes.
