Top 10 hotels in San Antonio de Areco, Argentina

August 15, 2022 Roseanne Arnett

A compact small town nearly 70 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, San Antonio de Areco is in the heart of the Argentine Pampas region. It’s a great 1½-hour day trip by car or bus from Buenos Aires—or the perfect jumping-off point for those who choose to visit at a nearby estancia, or a traditional large rural ranch and estate. Major attractions here include the colonial sights of San Antonio de Areco itself, the Museum of the Gaucho (which celebrates Argentine cowboys), and a variety of estancias themselves, which are located within two hours of San Antonio de Areco. If you don’t feel like planning your own itinerary, several tour and travel companies will coordinate your visit and arrange your estancia stay.

Estancia La Sofia

La Sofia is a farm (=estancia) just one hour from Buenos Aires and 14km from a nice traditional place called San Antonio de Areco. You can just come along the day for riding and or Polo, eat an "asado" (=argentian barbecue) and pass a relaxing day in the Argentinian Pampa. There are horses of the own bread available for all levels of riding y for those who want to try out Polo you can do this.

Don’t hesitate, book this place even with a beginner level of polo experience

First, this was a two night stay in the middle of a long two week Argentinian vacation. We’ve never played polo before, but we’re walking away with a new level of appreciation for the sport and sincere excitement for future polo play. For the football fans out there, this is like learning football from Nick Sabin. You’ll be learning from a master of the sport, Marcos, while also enjoying the upmost hospitality from his wife Silke. They make an excellent team. I always appreciate it when reviewers leave a comment about their prior travel experience and the places seen during this most recent trip so that I can understand the context, so I’ll do the same here. Between the two of us, we’ve traveled to over 30 countries, And during the course of our trip to Argentina, we spent two days in Buenos Aires, two days in Mendoza, three days in Cafayate, two days in El Calafate, and two days in El Chalten. When I say this is I can’t mess activity, I mean it. Do not miss this. Estancia La Sofia is something that interested both of us when I was looking at places to stay around Buenos Aires. We ended up extending our trip by two days to make this portion work. We were interested in doing something uniquely Argentinian without prior horseback riding experience or polo play. We did the intensive for beginners program which involved twice a day polo lessons with Marcos and his son. Let me tell you this, polo is seriously fun. You walk away from each lesson having improved your skills. By the end of our two days there, we were both forgetting about the fact that we were even riding a horse during play. We were so engaged in the game. We have a long way to go before we can play a competitive match, but we feel that we are well on our way. We are even considering returning for a weeklong program, that’s how fun this was. If you’re reading this review, don’t hesitate, and just book this place. If you’re beginners like us, if you’re advanced players like Marcos who plays professionally and has played polo for over 60 years, you’ll improve your game and have a ton of fun. The icing on the cake is the beautiful grounds, comfortable rooms, on-site pool, and some of the best meals we’ve had an Argentina prepared by Marcos and Silke. As a tip for those staying on site, there’s a nearby town which has one of the best silversmiths in the country. Don’t miss this place. We bought a beautiful pair of silver earrings with intricate details, a mate cup, and a summer hat. To conclude, this place greatly exceeded our expectations. By the end of the two days, we were both not just riding the horse, but playing, all in the most comfortable surroundings and hospitality. That’s why we will remember this visit for years to come and want to return.

A little souless but clean and quiet.

Rather strange place to stay but nonetheless it was clean and reasonably welcoming. Breakfast was limited but there was plenty. My room was on the courtyard and was basic but clean. There was little noise and it was easy to sleep. The hotel is a short walk form the main square. I did not use the spa facilities so cannot comment.

Not an historical place, but a filthy place

Reviewed By glamismac

This place is an insult towards any other hospedaje in Argentina who is trying to meet guests in a decent manner and trying to make business in right way, with respect to the guests and not thinking only about money. The building is great indeed, a wonderful colonial house in a quiet and nice city, but it looks like it was opened two days ago after 70 years of abandonment, put up a bed and put the guests in. Dirty, old stuff everywhere, abandoned medicine, leafs inside the closets. Horrible conditions everywhere. The owner stalked us prior to our arrival to sell us activities, and it’s easy to understand why, since money is the only thing that matter, not the guests relax, not cleaning or helping (nobody helped us with the luggage, they were just looking). Dogs roams freely and nobody say nothing, even when doing “breakfast”, that means a dirty table full of flies, with juice poured hours before in open glasses, and coffee available in an old thermos. As an addiction, they don't give you a key to the room because "forget security", so everyone can go in or out. We literally run away, after paying the highest price payed in Argentina in a single night, in dollars and with all the taxes that are not due from foreign visitors. Visit the city, the pueblo and the beautiful country but stay well away from this place.

Nice town pity about the hotel

Reviewed By Linda2856

This hotel is clean but otherwise has nothing going for it. The rooms are old and the bathroom antiquated. The water pressure in the shower is not very good. Breakfast is reasonable. Wifi doesn't work well in the room so you have to go outside to get a good signal. When we arrived no-one answered the door which was locked. It took us some time to get attention. The person who finally greeted us couldn't speak English. We can't speak Spanish but for someone in hospitality and tourism I would think some command of English would be advisable. It's only a short walk to the centre of the town so location is good. Not worth the money.
