If you have an interest in pioneer history, or you just need a great rest stop with clean restrooms, stop at the Interpretive Center! It's great! It's also a great place to take kids, especially if they are learning about history. You could seriously spend several hours there! In the past, they have one weekend in late May or June, when they have something like living history days. Outdoor displays and activities. People dressed in period costumes, etc. It's seriously great! Plan to spend the night in the area though because you will be tired from all the fun!

This museum focuses on the rich natural and cultural heritage of the "Silver State." Visit to learn about local wildlife, see the bones of pre-historic creatures found in the area and the Ichthyosaur Shonisaurus popularis, Nevada's state fossil.

The exhibits are very well designed, with a nice combination of artifacts, signage and multimedia. There is plenty of interest for both adults and teenage kids. This is a great way to understand the development of the State. There is a good gift shop and very clean restrooms.

The Museum has a wonderful selection of historic RR artifacts including steam locomotives Dayton,Inyo and #25, McKeen and Edwards motorcars and Coach 17 from the “Golden Spike” ceremony at Promontory Summit in Utah as well as several other rolling stock pieces. On selected days kids and adults alike can get up close and take a short ride on one of the authentic trains. Stewart Indian Cultural Center

Once a school that taught Native Americans how to get along in "the white man's world," this cultural center now houses a fascinating collection of Native American art including the work of photographer E.S. Curtis.

Reviewed By RedRoss53 - Richland, United States

I can't remember how we heard about this when we visited Carson City, but we were glad we did. The visitor center was quite impressive and the movie was helpful to understand the school, how & why it was founded and perhaps more importantly, how it changed to encourage traditions of Native Americans rather than drum them out of the children who came here, either voluntarily or by force of the white establishment. Very nice, enthusiastic volunteers and beautiful buildings - some abandoned and some in use as govt. offices. No cost - great for bad weather!

Western Folklife Center

This center focuses on contemporary folk art, cowboy gear and serves as the headquarters for the Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

Reviewed By backpacker31 - Boynton Beach, United States

Stopped in to learn about the local cowboy culture as well as the famous Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Upon entering, I had the good fortune to meet Ken, the gift shop manager. A lifelong resident of Elko and former educator, he turned out to be the perfect 'guide' for my visit. He not only highlighted the exhibits inside the center, but he also shared stories as well as provided me with a unique insight on what it means to be a 'cowboy' and what life is like in this remote corner of Nevada. Absolutely fascinating! The museum had several exhibits. One exhibit of particular interest were intricately designed spurs. Wow! These are absolutely works of art. A short film gave me a brief introduction to cowboy poetry and 'life on the range.' Be sure to visit the adjacent/attached bar - the longest I've ever seen. Admission is free, but a suggested donation is appreciated - and worthwhile. Perhaps someday I'll make it back to Elko for the Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

The Ward Charcoal Ovens was on my Nevada bucket list. Exploring them lived up to my expectations. The history of these well built structures is fascinating. One tip:when heading south on route 50, take the second turn (look for the official park sign) to drive 7 miles on a dirt road to the site. What a cool place to visit!
