Getting its name from the medieval Duchy of Limburg (now split among Holland, Belgium and Germany and the birthplace of the infamously pungent Limburger cheese), Limburg is the Netherlands’ southernmost region. Many of the area’s best attractions are concentrated in the capital of Maastricht, but other sights include the 12th-century Valkenburg castle ruins, the 17th-century Eijsden castle, the 20th-century Glaspaleis (built next to a medieval church at Heerlen), and De Meinweg National Park.

Our guide, Willy, was a great source of information on the one hour + tour of the fort and it’s underground tunnels. It was really interesting to learn about the fort and its role in Maastricht’s history over the years. Great views over the city and surroundings.

Do not miss this book store, it will be an experience you will never have again. The cafe at the back of the store is a perfect place to pause your day and take in the wonderful tea, coffee and treats. I can’t even explain the feeling you get when you enter this ancient church which has been restored to be a fascinating book store with thousands of books, music, magazines and loads of wonderful trinkets. A must see! Side effect is, you end up in the heart of Masstricht, a world heritage site, you won’t regret this visit.

De Weltermolen is een watermolen aan de Weltervijver en staat voor het eerst beschreven in de geschiedenis in 1341. Het is het oudste, nog werkende, monument in Heerlen. Elke derde zondag van de maand geopend van 12 tot 16 uur. Besloten gezelschappen en schoolexcursies buiten openingstijden tegen een kleine vergoeding. Volledig bemand door vrijwillige molenaars.

Na een korte bovengrondse rondwandeling over en door het hoge front en krijgt u een indruk hoe een dergelijk defensiesysteem er na ca. 250 jaar ongewijzigd uitziet. Vervolgens gaan we ondergronds en nemen u mee naar de mijngangen, luistergangen, communicatiekoepels en caponnières. Deze rondleiding is elke zaterdagochtend om 10.30 uur. Reserveren via de website.

It is a replica, but, trust me...fantastic! If you are here, go and visit them. Much nicer than all the other caves in Valkenburg.

218 steps to the top but the views are amazing The Red Tower on the Vrifhof. Church is different and may be over shadow by the basilica next door. Lots of thing to look at Old but looks modern
